THE KARLOVY VARY FESTIVAL TO HONOR ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING DIRECTOR BARRY LEVINSON At this year’s Karlovy Vary festival, screenwriter-producer-director Barry Levinson, who won an Academy Award for Rain Man, will accept the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema. The Karlovy Vary festival continues its tradition of recognizing the most important personalities of world cinema, the likes of which include directors William Friedkin, Jerry Schatzberg, and Ken Loach, and screenwriter Paul Laverty. In his writing and directing capacity, Academy Award winner and five-time nominee Barry Levinson deftly combines personal stories with an often satirical look at society, and his movies have fundamentally influenced numerous young filmmakers. Barry Levinson established himself as a writer of successful television shows. With his onetime wife, Valerie Curtin, he then wrote the movie script for Norman Jewison’s courtroom drama …and justice for all (1979), which brought them an Oscar nomination. He debuted as a director with the comedy-drama Diner (1982), receiving his second Oscar nomination for the script. Ivan Král, a Czech musician based in the US, co- wrote the film music. Subsequent titles confirmed his reputation with critics and audiences: The Natural (1984) with Robert Redford, Tin Men (1987) with Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito, and Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) with Robin Williams. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the legendary picture Rain Man (1988), awarded four Oscars (e.g. Best Director for Barry Levinson) and numerous other honors, including the Golden Bear at the Berlinale and the David di Donatello for Best Foreign Film.

How Ninja Conquered the World THE TIMELINE OF SHINOBI POP CULTURE’S WORLDWIDE EXPLOSION Version 1.3 ©Keith J. Rainville, 2020 How did insular Japan’s homegrown hooded set go from local legend to the most marketable character archetype in the world by the mid-1980s? VN connects the dots below, but before diving in, please keep a few things in mind: • This timeline is a ‘warts and all’ look at a massive pop-culture phenomenon — meaning there are good movies and bad, legit masters and total frauds, excellence and exploitation. It ALL has to be recognized to get a complete picture of why the craze caught fire and how it engineered its own glass ceiling. Nothing is being ranked, no one is being endorsed, no one is being attacked. • This is NOT TO SCALE, the space between months and years isn’t literal, it’s a more anecdotal portrait of an evolving phenomenon. • It’s USA-centric, as that’s where VN originates and where I lived the craze myself. And what happened here informed the similar eruptions all over Europe, Latin America etc. Also, this isn’t a history of the Japanese booms that predated ours, that’s someone else’s epic to outline. • Much of what you see spotlighted here has been covered in more depth on VintageNinja.net over the past decade, so check it out... • IF I MISSED SOMETHING, TELL ME! I’ll be updating the timeline from time to time, so if you have a gap to fill or correction to offer drop me a line! Pinholes of the 1960s In Japan, from the 1600s to the 1960s, a series of booms and crazes brought the ninja from shadowy history to popular media.

  • A Study of Musical Affect in Howard Shore's Soundtrack to Lord of the Rings
PROJECTING TOLKIEN'S MUSICAL WORLDS: A STUDY OF MUSICAL AFFECT IN HOWARD SHORE'S SOUNDTRACK TO LORD OF THE RINGS Matthew David Young A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC IN MUSIC THEORY May 2007 Committee: Per F. Broman, Advisor Nora A. Engebretsen © 2007 Matthew David Young All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Per F. Broman, Advisor In their book Ten Little Title Tunes: Towards a Musicology of the Mass Media, Philip Tagg and Bob Clarida build on Tagg’s previous efforts to define the musical affect of popular music. By breaking down a musical example into minimal units of musical meaning (called musemes), and comparing those units to other musical examples possessing sociomusical connotations, Tagg demonstrated a transfer of musical affect from the music possessing sociomusical connotations to the object of analysis. While Tagg’s studies have focused mostly on television music, this document expands his techniques in an attempt to analyze the musical affect of Howard Shore’s score to Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. This thesis studies the ability of Shore’s film score not only to accompany the events occurring on-screen, but also to provide the audience with cultural and emotional information pertinent to character and story development. After a brief discussion of J.R.R. Tolkien’s description of the cultures, poetry, and music traits of the inhabitants found in Middle-earth, this document dissects the thematic material of Shore’s film score.

  • Cannes Critics Week Panel Films Screened During TIFF Cinematheque's Fifty Years of Discovery: Cannes Critics Week (Jan. 18-22
Cannes Critics Week panel Films screened during TIFF Cinematheque’s Fifty Years of Discovery: Cannes Critics Week (Jan. 18-22, 2012) In honour of the fiftieth anniversary of Semaine de la Critique (Cannes Critics Week), TIFF Cinematheque invited eight local and international critics and opinion-makers to each select and introduce a film that was discovered at the festival. The diversity of their selections—everything from revered art-house classics to scrappy American indies, cutting-edge cult hits and intriguingly unknown efforts by famous names—testifies to the festival’s remarkable breadth and eclecticism, and its key role in discovering new generations of filmmaking talent. Programmed by Brad Deane, Manager of Film Programmes. Clerks. Dir. Kevin Smith, 1994, U.S. 92 mins. Production Co.: View Askew Productions / Miramax Films. Introduced by George Stroumboulopoulos, host of CBC’s Stroumboulopoulos Tonight, formerly known as The Hour. Stroumboulopoulos on Clerks: “When Kevin Smith made Clerks and it got on the big screen, you felt like our voice was winning.” Living Together (Vive ensemble). Dir. Anna Karina, 1973, France. 92 mins. Production Co.: Raska Productions / Société Nouvelle de Cinématographie (SNC). Introduced by author and former critic for the Chicago Reader, Jonthan Rosenblum. Rosenblum on Living Together: “I saw Living Together when it was first screened at Cannes in 1973, and will never forget the brutality with which this gently first feature was received. One prominent English critic, the late Alexander Walker, asked Anna Karina after the screening whether she realized that her first film was only being shown because she was once married to a famous film director; she sweetly asked in return whether she should have therefore rejected the Critics Week’s invitation.

Though the printed word is essential in learning, educators have been taking notice of the new visual and oratory stimuli and incorporated them into classroom teaching. The purpose of this idea packet is to further introduce teacher colleagues to this methodology and share a compilation of films which may be easily implemented in secondary social studies instruction. Though this project focuses in grades 6-12 social studies we believe that media should be infused into all K-12 subject areas, from language arts, math, and foreign languages, to science, the arts, physical education, and more. In this day and age, students have become accustomed to acquiring knowledge through mediums such as television and movies. Though books and text are essential in learning, teachers should take notice of the new visual stimuli. Films are familiar in the everyday lives of students.

  • TOP GUN (1986) and the Emergence of the Post-Cinematic by MICHAEL LOREN SIEGEL
5.4 Ride into the Danger Zone: TOP GUN (1986) and the Emergence of the Post-Cinematic BY MICHAEL LOREN SIEGEL Introduction The work of British-born filmmaker Tony Scott has undergone a major critical revision in the last few years. While Scott’s tragic suicide in 2012 certainly drew renewed vigor to this reassessment, it was well underway long before his death. Already by the mid-2000s, Scott’s brash, unapologetically superficial, and yet undeniably visionary films had been appropriated by auteurists and film theorists alike to support a wide range of arguments.[1] Regardless of what we may think of the idea of using auteurism and theory to “rescue” directors who were for decades considered little more than action hacks—an especially meaningful question in the digital age, given the extent to which auteur theory’s acceptance has increased in direct proportion to the growth of online, theoretically informed film criticism—it would be difficult to deny the visual, aural, narrative, thematic, and energetic consistency of Scott’s films, from his first effort, The Hunger (1983), all the way through to his last, Unstoppable (2011). The extreme scale and artistic ambition of his films, the intensity of their aesthetic and affective engagement with Ride into the Danger Zone the present (a present defined, as they constantly remind us, by machines, mass media, masculinity, and militarization), and, indeed, the consistency of their audiovisual design and affect (their bristling, painterly flatness, the exaggerated sense of perpetual transformation and becoming that is conveyed by their soundtracks and montage, the hyperbolic and damaged masculinity of their protagonists)—all of this would have eventually provoked the kind of critical reassessment we are seeing today, even without the new mythos produced around Scott upon his death.
