  • Cultivating Identity and the Music of Ultimate Fighting
CULIVATING IDENTITY AND THE MUSIC OF ULTIMATE FIGHTING Luke R Davis A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2012 Committee: Megan Rancier, Advisor Kara Attrep © 2012 Luke R Davis All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Megan Rancier, Advisor In this project, I studied the music used in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) events and connect it to greater themes and aspects of social study. By examining the events of the UFC and how music is used, I focussed primarily on three issues that create a multi-layered understanding of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters and the cultivation of identity. First, I examined ideas of identity formation and cultivation. Since each fighter in UFC events enters his fight to a specific, and self-chosen, musical piece, different aspects of identity including race, political views, gender ideologies, and class are outwardly projected to fans and other fighters with the choice of entrance music. This type of musical representation of identity has been discussed (although not always in relation to sports) in works by past scholars (Kun, 2005; Hamera, 2005; Garrett, 2008; Burton, 2010; Mcleod, 2011). Second, after establishing a deeper sense of socio-cultural fighter identity through entrance music, this project examined ideas of nationalism within the UFC. Although traces of nationalism fall within the purview of entrance music and identity, the UFC aids in the nationalistic representations of their fighters by utilizing different tactics of marketing and fighter branding. Lastly, this project built upon the above- mentioned issues of identity and nationality to appropriately discuss aspects of how the UFC attempts to depict fighter character to create a “good vs.

  • The Rise and Rise of the UFC (Or Will Oversaturation Lead to Its Downfall)
(Cite as: Laws of the Game, ISSN: 2058-7244) Volume 1, Issue 1 Article 2 From rags to riches: The rise and rise of the UFC (or will oversaturation lead to its downfall). R Savage-West Abstract In 1993, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) promoted a “no holds barred” mixed-martial arts contest designed to answer the perennial combat sports fans' question - can a wrestler beat a boxer? Considerable blood, sweat and (some) tears later, the UFC has turned into a multimedia corporate behemoth. This article will analyse the origins of the Ultimate fighting Championship and its continued struggle to gain mainstream acceptance and regulatory approval. In particular, the article will analyse how the UFC has shifted between subscription-based channels, event pay-per-view television, free-to-air shows and non-traditional media channels such as social media and user-generated content depending on how acceptable its product was deemed for the public. The article will conclude by arguing that while UFC has expanded globally and now dominates the mixed- martial arts industry, the ever-increasing demand for high-quality events taking place against a backdrop of corporate respectability, may eventually alienate its core market and lead to an ultimely demise…. Yet as execs including Fox Sports Media Group chmn David Hill and UFC pres Dana White exchanged professions of bro love and admiration, FX may very well emerge as the undisputed winner from all this. The deal moves “The Ultimate Fighter” next year to FX, infusing the reality series with a live format and direct fan engagement—and the net with 32 live fights/year on Fri nights. And don’t forget, FX begins airingPAC-12 and Big 12 football games this fall, includ- ing features of powerhouses Oregon, USC and Oklahoma. To FX chief John Landgraf, who was also at the hypef- est, the net’s new sports content changes the game. “Our original programming is the envy of any network” and our ratings are right there with general ent nets such as USA and TNT, he said.
