PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Children lined up Aug. 3 at the R.P. Lee Youth Center to get their back- to-school swag, school information and news about a new online tutoring program that could help them in the coming school year. The “Back to School Bash” was hosted by the 21st Force Support Squadron and provided school-age children with “tool boxes” filled with pens, pencils, scissors, crayons, notebooks and folders. The 21st FSS worked with representatives from local supporting school districts to provide the free school supplies to military families. Members of the 21st Security Forces Squadron and a mili- tary working dog were at the bash along with McGruff the Crime Dog to give safety tips. Children also learned school bus safety tips from “Buster the School Bus,” a talking, yellow bus who entertained some of the younger children. Children who live on Peterson Air Force Base are zoned for schools in the Colorado Springs School District No. 11. The first day of school for the district was Aug. 18. This school year, Air Force families will have access to a free, online tutoring service. The site, www.tutor.com/military, offers round-the-clock professional tutors who can assist with homework, studying and test preparation. Marine Corps and Army families have had access to the program for more than a year. Seeing the value, Defense Department officials decided to expand the service to include all servicemembers and their families, officials said. Peterson Airmen and their families can sign up at the Peterson Library for a military account and password, said Lisa Ballard, 21st Space Wing school liaison officer. “This is a comprehensive, user-friendly tutoring program that is totally free to our military families,” she said. “The Rusty Moomey, the principal of Mitchell High School in Colorado Springs School District No. 11, hands a school “Tool Box” to Samuel Brayman, tutors are qualified professionals who can assist our military son of Lt. Col. Crismon Brayman. Mr. Moomey volunteered at the 21st Force Support Squadron’s “Back to School Bash” held at the R.P. Lee Youth Center gym on Aug. 3. The bash was held in conjunction with National Night Out and included games, arts and crafts and free school supplies. by Capt. Sharbe Clark

NORAD and USNORTHCOM Public Affairs

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The storyline seemed to come straight from a Cold War suspense thriller as NORAD forces working with their counterparts in the Russian Federation tracked a “hijacked” aircraft across the Pacific Ocean, but this was no movie. The North American Aerospace Defense Command and the Russian Federation completed the first joint 3-day exercise designed to establish clear communication processes that would allow the two forces to work together during a real crisis. The exercise, Vigilant Eagle, was an international air terrorism scenario exercised over the Pacific Ocean consisting of forces from the U.S. and Russia responding to the simulated hijacking of a B-757 en route to the Far East. The NORAD Planning and Exercise Directorate spearheaded the exercise. Elements of the Transportation Security Administration Operations Center, Federal Aviation Administration, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, the 611th Air and Space Operations Group, 176th Air Control Squadron and the Alaska NORAD Region made up the U.S. half of the exercise while the Communications and Radiotech Directorate, Navigation Service of the Russian Federation Air Force, Office of Special Translation and Interpretation Operations Directorate and the National Antiterrorism Office made up the Russian half. “What we are practicing today is the communication procedures between NORAD, plus U.S. civilian air traffic control agencies and our Russian coun- terparts so that we can pass on information to them about air terrorism events to allow them to posture their forces to respond in kind,” said Canadian Forces Col. Todd Balfe, Alaska NORAD Region deputy commander. In the scenario presented by the exercise, a B-757 jetliner, simulated by a Gulfstream 4 jet, signaled to authorities on the ground that it has been hijacked. NORAD F-22s and an E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control aircraft scrambled in response and followed the track of interest across the Pacific and handing it off to Russian Federation fighters as it approached Russian territory. On the second day of the exercise, it was done in reverse, with SU-27 fighters making the hand-off to F-22s as the “hijacked” aircraft approached Alaska. Air Force Lt. Col. John Oberst, 176th ACS operations officer, said the very fact that NORAD and Russian forces were working together in this exercise made it a success.\ “This exercise is one milestone in working together in other future efforts,” he said. “Our folks are proud to be a part of such an important event and are passionate about partaking in efforts to protect our borders.” Russian Air Force Col. Alexander Vasilyev, Russian Federation Air Forces deputy director of security and safety said that despite the friction the two countries have had in years past, it is important for them to work together to A pair of F-22 fighters escort Fencing 1220, a Gulfstream 4 simulating a hijacked airliner, over Alaska as part of Exercise VIGILANT combat the dangers of air terrorism. VIGILANT EAGLE is a cooperative exercise involving the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the “Terrorism is something that affects all our countries,” he said. “So it is Russian Air Force. The exercise scenario creates a situation that requires both the Russian Air Force and NORAD to launch or divert very important that we work together to develop procedures and bring the fighter aircraft to investigate and follow a “hijacked” airliner. SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo -- My mother is on Facebook. Yes, I said it -- the woman who can’t set the time on her DVD player without having the offended machine shoot angry DVD’s at her is now able to poke, prod and update at her leisure. I tell you this only to say that if you haven’t heard of social media, you’re probably living at the bottom of the sea. There is resounding evidence that Air Force members are using social media with great abundance. According to the Air Force Social Media Use Survey, 69 percent of Airmen use YouTube, 48 percent of Airmen use MySpace and 50 percent of Airmen currently participate on Facebook. There are also numerous Airmen out there “tweeting,” blogging and photo sharing. As a public affairs professional, I am all for this. We want more Airmen empowered to be the spokespersons for the Air Force. Gone are the days when only the commander or senior enlisted members were the ones telling folks about what’s going on in the Air Force. With this empowerment comes responsibility. Air Force Space Command Public Affairs

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- A senior noncommissioned officer assigned to Headquarters Air Force Space Command is one of the Air Force’s 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year for 2010. Senior Master Sgt. Sarah Sparks, Directorate of Logistics, Installations and Mission Support, command equipment manager, received the news last week from Gen. C. Robert Kehler, commander of AFSPC. “I was totally surprised,” Sergeant Sparks said. “This is a huge honor and very humbling. It’s hard to wrap my fingers around it, but I am very proud to represent the command.” Not wanting to take all the accolades for herself, she credits the support she receives from her coworkers, husband, Master Sgt. Sam Sparks, and their three sons Logan, Joaquin, and Isaiah. Sergeant Sparks was selected based on superior leadership, job performance and personal achievements by an Air Force selection board that represents major commands, direct re- porting units, field operating agencies and the Air Staff at the Air Force Personnel Center, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. As part of her recognition, Sergeant Sparks is authorized to wear the Outstanding Airman of the Year ribbon with the bronze service star device along with the Outstanding Airman of the Year Badge for one year from the date of formal presentation. AFSPC’s Command Chief Master Sergeant Todd Small said the Air Force selection board had a tough time picking the winners, but ultimately made the right decision. “Sergeant Sparks’ leadership and dedication led the way to this prestigious recognition,” Chief Small said. “Her performance raises the bar for our NCO corps and sets a clear example of ‘excellence in all we do.’ The competition was tough and even though we are Recently promoted Senior Master Sgt.
