Aparecieron nuevas planta- ciones de olivos, principalmente en la zona del Pla (centro de la isla), y se mejoraron los sistemas de recolección y elaboración. El arraigo del cultivo del olivo y de su transformación en aceite, y el notable incremento de la calidad del aceite de oliva elaborado en Mallorca, da lugar a un producto con características propias que se puede diferenciar de aceites similares procedentes de otras zonas de producción. Todo esto hizo posible la obtención, en el año 2002, de un distintivo de máxima calidad como es la Denominación de Origen Oli de Mallorca. La denominación de origen es el reconocimiento mediante un nombre geográfico del origen y las características de los productos alimentarios, que posibilita la diferenciación de unos productos respecto a los otros. En el caso del aceite de Mallorca, este hecho lleva implícito un recono- cimiento oficial de un aceite de oliva de calidad, producido y elaborado en la isla de Mallorca. El oli de Mallorca es un aceite de oliva virgen extra elaborado a partir de olivas de las variedades mallorquina, arbequina y picual.

The custom of producing olive oil, along with a notable increase in the general quality of the olive oil being produced in Majorca, has created a product with unique characteristics, easy to differentiate from similar types of olive oil produced in other areas and worthy, in 2002, of a Designation of Origin “Oli de Mallorca” label. A Designation of Origin label protects the reputation of regional foods and eliminates unfair competition and misleading of consumers by non- genuine products which may be of an inferior quality and different in taste.
