Flora Von Bosnien, Der Herzegowina Und Des Sandzaks Novipazar ) © Biodiversity Heritage Library, http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/; www.zobodat.at Flora von Bosnien, der Herzegowina und des Sandzaks Novipazar. II. Teil. — 1 2 . (Festuca elatior Lolium perenne X } ? Acercis anthropopliorci R. Br., Epipogon aphyllus Sw. oder für die Herzegowina: Carex extensa Good., Orchis quadripunctata Cyrill. Band XI. 26 © Biodiversity Heritage Library, http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/; www.zobodat.at 394 III. Naturwissenschaft. During the investigations, A.holandrii was recorded at 71 sampling sites located at 48 rivers. According to our data, the species is widely distributed within the investigated area. It was found to be the dominant snail species in the Drina River and some smaller rivers, while in the Danube the species was found to be rare and situated in a short stretch. As a widely distributed and frequent taxa in running waters situated in the hilly regions of Serbia, the species is suitable to be used in water monitoring for a particular group of stream types. Thus, it is important to further investigate the environmental factors that influence the distribution ofA. holandrii to get more reliable information in order to include this species more effectively in a system of assessment of ecological status in the country. Keywords: Amphimelania holandrii, distribution, Serbia, field research Introduction In this paper we present data of the most recent distribution (in the period 2009-2012) of Amphimelania holandrii (C.Pfeiffer, 1828), syn.

  • An Environmental Assessment of the Balkan Conflict Presenter: Pekka Haavisto
Theme 5 – The Cost of War Presentation: An Environmental Assessment of the Balkan Conflict Presenter: Pekka Haavisto The Balkans Task Force (BTF) was jointly set up in May 1999 by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements in response to the recommendation of an earlier United Nations mission to provide a detailed assessment of the full extent of the environmental impact of the conflict in the Balkans. Sixty experts from six UN agencies, 19 countries and 26 scientific institutions and NGOs have been involved in the various BTF assessment missions, which have assessed the environmental damage to four industrial sites, the damage to the Danube River, the effect on biological diversity in protected areas, the effect on human settlements and the effect of depleted uranium weapons. The final report1 highlights the environmental consequences of air strikes in environmental hotspots, as well as some serious long-term deficiencies that pre-date the Kosovo conflict, and indicates the need for immediate action as part of a programme of humanitarian assistance to the region. After a preliminary field assessment, the first team of experts investigated industrial sites in Pancevo, Novi Sad, Kragujevac, Nis, Bor, Prahovo and Pristina in July 1999. Samples were taken, some of which were analysed immediately in mobile field laboratories provided by Denmark and Germany; other samples were analysed in reputable scientific institutions. Another team of international experts, nine scientists from eight countries and representatives of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Green Cross, assessed the situation of the Danube River in close co- operation with the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR).

  • Distribution of Anopheles Daciae and Other Anopheles Maculipennis Complex Species in Serbia
Parasitology Research (2018) 117:3277–3287 https://doi.org/10.1007/s00436-018-6028-y ORIGINAL PAPER Distribution of Anopheles daciae and other Anopheles maculipennis complex species in Serbia Mihaela Kavran1 & Marija Zgomba1 & Thomas Weitzel2 & Dusan Petric1 & Christina Manz3 & Norbert Becker2 Received: 22 May 2018 /Accepted: 24 July 2018 /Published online: 28 August 2018 # The Author(s) 2018 Abstract Malaria is one of the most severe health problems facing the world today. Until the mid-twentieth century, Europe was an endemic area of malaria, with the Balkan countries being heavily infested. Sibling species belonging to the Anopheles maculipennis complex are well-known as effective vectors of Plasmodium in Europe. A vast number of human malaria cases in the past in the former Yugoslavia territory have stressed the significance of An. maculipennis complex species as primary and secondary vectors. Therefore, the present study evaluates the species composition, geographic distribution and abundance of these malaria vector species. Mosquitoes were collected in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina and analysed by PCR- RFLP, multiplex PCR and sequencing of the ITS2 intron of genomic rDNA. Four sibling species of the An. maculipennis complex were identified. Both larvae and adults of the recently described species An. daciae were identified for the first time in Serbia. In 250 larval samples, 109 (44%) An. messeae,90(36%)An. maculipennis s.s., 33 (13%) An. daciae and 18 (7%) An. atroparvus were identified. In adult collections, 81 (47%) An. messeae,55(32%)An. daciae,33(19%)An. maculipennis s.s., and 3(2%)An. atroparvus were recorded. The most abundant species in Vojvodina was An.
