Belonging to a historic family of Sicilian aristocrats, Masseria Pernice lies on a 135 hectare estate of vineyards, olive groves and pastureland. The farmhouse, or baglio, was built at the beginning of the 20th century and has a classic Sicilian-style internal courtyard.The baglio’s courtyard retains its traditional cobbles, and its pale pink external walls are covered with bougainvillea, jasmine, roses and geraniums, creating an atmosphere which is simple, welcoming and peaceful.

Sleeping accommodation is in four apartments (two with cooking facilities; the apartments can be rented separately and also for short stays – 3 days minimum) facing the main farmhouse, in buildings that were originally used by workers during the grape and olive harvests. They have been restored according to the principals of bio-architecture, and decorated with family heirlooms, Sicilian ceramics and antique prints. There is a salone, or living room, created within what was once the granary. From here, you pass into a splendid garden set against hills covered with pines and eucalypti, with a large swimming pool (14m x 7m) and an area for barbeques.

WE LIKE

This is a genuine country house — cosy, comfortable and very personal and homely in feel. Because accommodation is in independent apartments the villa is ideal for groups of friends who want some independence and some social time. We loved that there is a cook on the estate — what better way to experience genuine Sicilian cuisine? Cookery courses can also be organised here — we think the setting, on the olive and wine estate is ideal, and the pool and garden are perfect for relaxing and cooking off after lessons (and lunches!)

WE THINK

The masseria is ideal for extended families with children or groups of couples and singles — it is important to note that the twin beds in La Casina dei Fiori and La Casina delle Papere are of a design that means they cannot be made up as double beds. The masseria is an ideal place to organise a small cookery course!
