9/10/13 Judith Hanson Lasater Beginning the Journey: Living the Yamas of Patanjali When our children were young, my husband and I would occasionally summon up enough courage to take them out for dinner. As we stood outside the selected restaurant, one of us would stare down into their upturned innocent faces and remind them, to “be good” or we would leave the restaurant. This warning was only mildly successful until one day my husband reasoned out a more effective approach. He explained and I agreed that telling the children to “be good” was just too vague; we needed to be specific. With this revelation in mind, on our next outing we stopped before entering a restaurant and reminded them of these specifics, “Stay in your chair; don’t throw food, and do not yell. If you do any of these things, one of us will take you out of the restaurant at once.” We gave them clear guidelines and immediate consequences to stepping over the line. We had stumbled upon a very effective technique and it worked like a charm. Each child tested the limit once, was quickly taken out, and after a very short time we had restaurant-capable children. Similarly, we as students of yoga are interested in learning the guidelines (discipline) and welcome the consequences (health and self-awareness) that come with the practices of yoga. Interesting, the author of the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali, actually presents an approach to the study of yoga which is similar and of course older to what my husband and I took. -

200hr Yoga Teacher Certification Student Syllabus and Program Information Mission Statement The Yoga School considers the certification of qualified yoga teachers our highest mission. We acknowledges that in order to offer excellent yoga teacher certification we must provide the highest quality educational curriculum and texts, faculty teachers and support services for the students and graduates. We pledge to always deliver superior training and service to the students and graduates. We feel it is our responsibility to share our knowledge through the provision of teacher role modeling, adherence to ethical standards, the curriculum objectives and standards of the National Yoga Alliance for registered yoga schools. Yellow Springs Yoga presents…. Judith Hanson Lasater Courageous Intimacy: Deepening Connection with Your Practice and Your Self April 28 – May 2, 2018 Whether we are on the mat or on the meditation cushion, yoga is a practice we do alone. But it does not necessarily follow that yoga practice has to be a lonely one. Once again in the Spring we gather as a Sangha to practice in Yellow Springs Ohio. Our theme this year is intimacy and practice Yoga practice is about creating a constant habit of deep reflective awareness. In other words, we practice to become more intimate with our selves, to develop a relationship with ourselves that allows us to be present. As we learn to do this, we understand what true intimacy with others is about. In these troubled times, we need each other, we need to practice, and we need to go deeper into the realms of silence and love. We are so fortunate to do this practice in the company of others who support us simply by their presence. Our work will include the practice of asana, both active and restorative, as well as pranayama and meditation. Simple writing assignments outside of class will bolster our private and individual learning. We invite you to join us and enjoy the camaraderie of our Yellow Springs “yoga family reunion”. Judith Hanson Lasater, Ph.D. is a Physical Therapist and holds a doctorate in East-West Psychology. She has been teaching yoga since 1971 and trains students and teachers all over the U.S. and internationally. She helped found the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco as well as the internationally known Yoga Journal magazine. -
