“The History of Hatha Yoga in America: the Americanization of Yoga” Book proposal By Ira Israel Although many American yoga teachers invoke the putative legitimacy of the legacy of yoga as a 5000 year old Indian practice, the core of the yoga in America – the “asanas,” or positions – is only around 600 years old. And yoga as a codified 90 minute ritual or sequence is at most only 120 years old. During the period of the Vedas 5000 years ago, yoga consisted of groups of men chanting to the gods around a fire. Thousands of years later during the period of the Upanishads, that ritual of generating heat (“tapas”) became internalized through concentrated breathing and contrary or bipolar positions e.g., reaching the torso upwards while grounding the lower body downwards. The History of Yoga in America is relatively brief yet very complex and in fact, I will argue that what has happened to yoga in America is tantamount to comparing Starbucks to French café life: I call it “The Americanization of Yoga.” For centuries America, the melting pot, has usurped sundry traditions from various cultures; however, there is something unique about the rise of the influence of yoga and Eastern philosophy in America that make it worth analyzing. There are a few main schools of hatha yoga that have evolved in America: Sivananda, Iyengar, Astanga, and later Bikram, Power, and Anusara (the Kundalini lineage will not be addressed in this book because so much has been written about it already). After practicing many of these different “styles” or schools of hatha yoga in New York, North Carolina, Florida, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Paris as well as in Thailand and Indonesia, I became so fascinated by the history and evolution of yoga that I went to the University of California at Santa Barbara to get a Master of Arts Degree in Hinduism and Buddhism which I completed in 1999. -

By Anne Cushman Artwork by Robert Mahon 46 TRICYCLE FA L L 20 1 0 TRICYCLE FA L L 20 1 0 47 couple of years ago, about a month before my first novel was due to be published—and several months into an intensive meditation training program for yoga teachers that I was co-directing at Spirit Rock Meditation Center—I had two startlingly vivid dreams. AThe first: I am gliding and twirling around a roller disco, dressed only in a black velvet bikini and white fur-trimmed rollerblades. When I catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror, my first reaction is delight: “I look totally hot!” Then comes horror: “But what if I run into a Spirit Rock teacher while I’m dressed like this?” The second: My novel in hand, I have gone into therapy with a good friend of mine, a longtime teacher of yoga and Buddhist meditation. The session is held on the edge of a precipitous cliff. As the therapist tries to intervene, my friend and I keep snatching a microphone away from each other, trying to dominate the conversation. But then I tell my friend, with great intensity, “The only purpose of writing is to wake up.” So we hug each other happily and leave to very dramas that spiritual practice is determined to transcend. dreaming—and the popsicle sticks I had hidden in my sock too early in the morning. Yoga can help address issues such as performance anxiety and musculoskeletal problems, and enhance focus and awareness during musical practice and performance. Although the philosophy of yoga has many similarities to the process of learning a musical instrument, the benefits of yoga for musicians is a topic that has gained attention only recently. This document explores several ways in which the practice and philosophy of yoga can be fused with saxophone pedagogy as one way to prepare students for a healthy and successful musical career. A six-week study at Arizona State University was conducted to observe the effects of regular yoga practice on collegiate saxophone students. Nine participants attended a sixty-minute “yoga for musicians” class twice a week. Measures included pre- and post- study questionnaires as well as personal journals kept throughout the duration of the study. These self-reported results showed that yoga had positive effects on saxophone playing. It significantly increased physical comfort and positive thinking, and improved awareness of habitual patterns and breath control. Student participants responded positively to the idea of integrating such a course into the music curriculum. -

The Best-Laid Plans A vomiting child in an airport hotel— it wasn’t the vacation she had in mind. ANNE CUSHMAN on the teachings of a trip gone awry. AST WEEKEND I had a spiritual breakthrough while stay- ing with my feverish ten-year-old son at a hotel at the Dallas/ Fort Worth International Airport. Well, okay, so maybe it wasn’t exactly a breakthrough. Maybe it was more of a little crack in the prison walls Lthrough which a ray of moonlight could shine. By prison, of course, I don’t mean our hotel room. We were actually in a very comfortable seventh-floor room with a panoramic view of the runway. That is, un- til Skye threw up all over the rug, at which point we were switched to an identical fourth-floor room with a panoramic view of the parking garage. No, by prison I mean those iron bars of thoughts and beliefs that… well, maybe I should just start this story at the beginning. LATE LAST FALL, I began planning a two-week trip to Guatemala with Skye to study Spanish and live with a Mayan family in a remote mountain village on the shores of Lake Atitlán. I set up our trip through a nonprofit organization run by a youngA merican couple who had made Guatemala their home. The more they told me about what we would experience there, the better it sounded. Our homestay family— Pedro, Gladis, and their three boys—didn’t speak English. We’d learn to make tortillas in Gladis’ wood-fired stove. -

Resources to encourage participation from patients and to enhance your own practice. Yoga as Medicine It is estimated that 21 million adults in the United States practice yoga. In the past 15 years the number of practitioners, of all ages, has doubled. It is thought that this increase is related to broader access, a growing body of research on the affects of the practice, and our understanding that ancient practices may hold the key to healing modern chronic diseases. Yoga: A VERY Brief History Yoga originated 5,000 or more years ago with the Indus Civilization Sanskrit is the language used in most Yogic scriptures and it is believed that the principles of the practice were transmitted by word of mouth for generations. Georg Feuerstien divides the history of Yoga into four catagories: Vedic Yoga: connected to ritual life, focus the inner mind in order to transcend the limitations of the ordinary mind Preclassical Yoga: Yogic texts, Upanishads and the Bhagavad-Gita Classical Yoga: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the eight fold path Postclassical Yoga: Creation of Hatha (willful/forceful) Yoga, incorporation of the body into the practice Modern Yoga Swami (master) Vivekananda speaks at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. -

Focuses on 10 new yoga poses and practice of the complete Sun Salutation. Course Overview Readings, lectures, demonstrations and class participation will be used to analyze the practice of yoga asana and yoga philosophy. •Students with injuries or pre-existing conditions that may affect performance must inform the instructor. •Students with specific medication conditions, limited flexibility or injuries will learn appropriate modifications of poses for their own practices. •All e-mail communication will be through GMU e-mail system – the Patriot Web Site. •Students are requested to bring their own yoga mat to class. •Comfortable stretch clothing are required.
