Lastly, thanks to Maura Meade Sperry, for your loving, good heart. You are the best. INTRODUCTION Welcome to A Beginner’s Guide to Meditation. This is not an advanced meditation book, nor is it a complete, definitive presentation of all the possible approaches to Buddhist meditation. Such a thing might not be possible in a hundred books, let alone one. Instead, what this book is meant to be is sufficient, meaning that these writings by eminent contemporary Buddhist teachers should be more than enough to get you started meditating with regularity and confidence. What you’ll find here is meant to help you to get clearer about meditation—even excited about it—without becoming overwhelmed. Many books on Buddhist meditation focus on a particular school, approach, or technique. A Beginner’s Guide to Meditation keeps in mind that there are so many different practices under the rubric of Buddhist meditation because there are so many kinds of people. What might work best for one person might not work well for another. My hope is that the sampling of teachings gathered here will help you find an approach that works for you. If you’re just getting started, it might be helpful to reflect on the reasons people want to meditate. Meditation is, of course, a timetested method for reducing anxiety and coming to terms with the short- and long-term mental afflictions that we all face. Ultimately, though, there’s more to get from it than just an increased sense of calm. The more you stick with the practice, the more you stand to gain insight into what makes you tick and find more cohesion and connection with the people in your life, too. A meditation practice can help you in a number of ways: • slow down and break patterns of obsessive or compulsive behavior • connect more with loved ones and be more present with others in general • come to terms with loss, addiction, and ill health • foster better health and body awareness • create a foundation for further investigation into Buddhist concepts Part 1, “Let’s Get Started,” presents the practice in its simplest form so that you can see from the beginning that meditation is entirely doable and really not anything extraordinary. From there, you’ll get advice and guidance to help you start your practice off right. In part 2, “Cultivating Calm and Insight (and More),” you’ll be introduced to the two basic forms of Buddhist meditation— shamatha, or tranquillity meditation, and vipashyana, or insight meditation—as well as other classic practices for cultivating a more spacious and friendly attitude toward others. You’ll get a glimpse into the world of Zen in part 3, which explains the practices of shikantaza, or “just sitting,” and koan introspection, which is perhaps the best-known and yet most misunderstood meditation approach found here. Part 4, “Indo-Tibetan Innovations,” shares teachings that spread from the regions of India and Tibet. These practices involve methods of cultivating loving-kindness and compassion, training the mind through the use of ancient and powerful slogans, and looking directly at the mind to analyze what we see. Finally, part 5, “Keep Your Practice Going,” gives you what you need to do just that, so that you can practice at home or with others at a practice center or extended retreat with enthusiasm, engagement, and confidence. There are even helpful yoga tips to keep you limber and refreshed. Having originated in northern India more than 2,500 years ago and then spread across the globe, Buddhism has a sprawling terminology that draws from many languages, with much of its terminology from Pali, Sanskrit, Japanese, and Tibetan. Different traditions use terms from different languages, so you’ll see, for example, that the Buddhist teachings themselves may be referred to with the Sanskrit word dharma or the Pali word dhamma. The practice of insight meditation is called vipassana (a Pali word) in the Theravada tradition; others use the Sanskrit term vipashyana. Zen Buddhism has its own specialized lexicon from the Japanese. There’s a glossary in the back to help you. The wide range of meditation practices, approaches, and teachings presented in A Beginner’s Guide to Meditation represent the many schools of Buddhist thought. Don’t let it all overwhelm you. There’s no need to worry that you have to “get it” all. Keep in mind that in Buddhist meditation, curiosity—the spirit of inquiry—is key.

When you hold the legendary sword, you can kill or grant life, as the moment dictates. Chinese come, foreigners go: foreigners come, Chinese go. In death there is already life: in life there is already death. Now tell me, what can you do? Unless your eye can penetrate all barriers and your body is free to make any turn, you can’t do a thing. But what is this eye that can penetrate all barriers? What is this body that is free to make any turn? Read this kong-an and see: A monk asked Jo-ju, “What is Jo-ju?” Jo Ju answered, “ East Gate, West Gate, South Gate, North Gate.” Strange language. We usually think that when a man dies he is dead, and when he lives he is alive. But in this language, life is death, death is life. Where does life come from? Where does death go? Life and death are only thinking. You must go beyond life and death. That is infinite life. It is “like this.” “Like this” is Jo-Ju’s original face. Mountains are mountains, rivers are rivers: yellow is yellow, red is red. Jo-Ju’s teacher, Nam Chan, said that everyday mind is the Way. Everyday mind is the mind that cuts off all thinking. It is the same as a mirror: when the beautiful comes, it is beautiful: When the ugly comes, it is ugly.

Theravada, which means “Way of the Elders,” is the earliest form of institutionalized Buddhism. It’s a style based primarily on talks the Buddha gave during his forty-six years of teaching. These talks were memorized and recited (before the internet, people could still do that) until they were finally written down a few hundred years later in Sri Lanka, where Theravada still dominates – and where there is also superb surf. In the US, Theravada mostly man- ifests through the teaching of Vipassana, particularly its popular meditation technique, mindfulness, the awareness of what is hap- pening now—thoughts, feelings, sensations—without judgment or attachment. Just as surfing is larger than, say, Kelly Slater, Theravada is larger than mindfulness. It’s a vast system of ethics and philoso- phies. That said, the essence of Theravada is using mindfulness to explore the Buddha’s first teaching, the Four Noble Truths, which go something like this: 1. Life is stressful. 2. Our constant desires make it stressful. 3. Freedom is possible. 4. ADAM Religious Studies Program, Department of Pacifi c and Asian Studies, University of Victoria, British Colombia, Canada [email protected] ABSTRACT: A close reading of the three Bhāvanākramaḥ texts, written by Kamalaśīla (740–795 CE), reveals that their author was aware of two competing concepts of medi- tation prevalent in Tibet at the time of their composition. The two concepts of medi- tation, associated with the Sanskrit words bhāvanā and dhyāna, can be related respec- tively to the Indian and Chinese sides of the well-known debates at bSam yas. The account of the Mahāyāna path outlined in these texts implies an acceptance of the precedence of bhāvanā over dhyāna. In this paper I argue that Kamalaśīla advocated bhāvanā – a conception of meditation which encompasses non-conceptual dhyāna, but which also includes a discernment of reality (bhūta-pratyavekṣā) that is conceptual in nature. Such conceptual discernment should not be understood simply as a process of ordinary rational understanding (cintāmayī prajñā) but rather as constituting a special kind of meditative wisdom (bhāvanāmayī prajñā). A failure to recognize the subtle dif- ferences between Kamalaśīla’s employment of the terms dhyāna and bhāvanā, along with his advocacy of the latter, could easily lead to mistranslation and, with this, a basic misunderstanding of his position. In particular, it could lead to a conception of insight (vipaśyanā) that is overly intellectual in nature.

From China, Zen spread south to Vietnam, northeast to Korea and Chinese name east to Japan.[2] Simplified Chinese 禅 Traditional Chinese 禪 The word Zen is derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the Middle Chinese word 禪 (dʑjen) (pinyin: Chán), which in Transcriptions turn is derived from the Sanskrit word dhyāna,[3] which can Mandarin be approximately translated as "absorption" or "meditative Hanyu Pinyin Chán state".[4] Cantonese Zen emphasizes insight into Buddha-nature and the personal Jyutping Sim4 expression of this insight in daily life, especially for the benefit Middle Chinese [5][6] of others.     Kindness Changes Everything Kindness Changes Everything When we practice loving-kindness, says NOAH LEVINE, we change for the better—and so does our world. The Buddha first taught loving-kindness to a group of monks who had been practicing meditation in a forest. The monks were fearful that the spirits of the forest did not want them there and that the spirits were going to attack them. Although the monks were probably just afraid of the dark, their fear became anger toward the forest, and their anger became hatred. And, of course, when one is feeling angry, unsafe, and resentful it becomes more and more difficult to meditate. So the group of monks went to the Buddha, asking for advice on how to deal with the perceived threat. The Buddha’s advice was the teachings of the Metta Sutta (the Loving- Kindness Lecture). He went into detail about the necessity of forgiving everyone for everything, and he taught the monks how to live a life of kindness, with the desire and willingness to protect others and not cause harm. The practical meditation technique for developing kindness, according to the Buddha, is focusing the mind on certain phrases by repeating them. Some of the common phrases are: “May all beings be at ease,” “May all beings be safe and protected from harm,” “May all beings be met with forgiveness,” “May all beings be free from suffering,” and “May all beings be happy.” It is said that after receiving the teaching on metta the monks went back to the same place in the forest but with a new outlook.
