INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL STUDENTS MAKE HOLIDAY CARDS FOR VETERANS A partnership between the Intermediate School and the Union County Veteran’s Foundation and the Union County WW2 Honor Roll continues to provide holiday cards for residents of the VA Nursing Home in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. The students are happy to participate in bringing joy to our veterans during the holidays! Pictured on the left: Mr. Doug Walter, Vice President of the Union County Veteran’s Foundation, picked up the cards from Mr. Philip Heggenstaller, Intermediate School Principal. 1 Mifflinburg Area School District December 1, 2020 Italian Sausage and Kale Soup TOTAL TIME: Prep: 20 min. Cook: 8 hours YIELD: 8 servings (3-1/2 quarts). Ingredients • 1-pound bulk hot Italian sausage • 6 cups chopped fresh kale • 2 cans (15-1/2 ounces each) great northern beans, rinsed and drained • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes • 4 large carrots, finely chopped (about 3 cups) • 1 medium onion, chopped • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 1 teaspoon dried oregano • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/8 teaspoon pepper • 5 cups chicken stock • Grated Parmesan cheese Directions 1. In a large skillet, cook sausage over medium heat 6-8 minutes or until no longer pink, breaking into crumbles; drain. Transfer to a 5-qt. slow cooker. 2. Add kale, beans, tomatoes, carrots, onion, garlic, seasonings and stock to slow cooker. Cook, covered, on low 8- 10 hours or until vegetables are tender. Top each serving with cheese. Makayla Lohr for being Mr. Hornberger’s 3rd Grade classroom setup is just one of the ways that our staff is showing how they can adjust their classrooms when selected as the recipient virtual instruction is taking place. Mr. Hornberger had his students draw and personalize pictures of themselves which he creatively arranged at of the December 2020 each student’s desk for their first day of virtual learning. Way to go! Week 9’s results show consistency among the teams’ weekly minute totals and submissions . This week will be the last week to get in those exercise minutes! Let’s push ourselves a little harder to help our teams finish strong! 3 Mifflinburg Area School District December 1, 2020 MIFFLINBURG INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL ANNOUNCES ASPIRES AWARD WINNERS Intermediate School Principal, Mr. Heggenstaller announced the winners of the ASPIRES Awards for the month of November 2020. These awards are given to students who demonstrate the behaviors in compliance with the anti-bullying program and who display positive behaviors and actions while in school. These students are chosen by their teachers, and the ASPIRES Awards are sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Mifflinburg. The November 2020 Award recipients are as follows: 3rd Grade – Laney Ulrich – Laney is the daughter Ty and Beth Ulrich of Mifflinburg. Her favorite subject is reading. Outside of school, Laney enjoys playing board games and collecting seashells. Laney’s favorite place to visit is Florida where she likes to swim. Laney also loves horses and her family. In the future, Laney has plans to work with animals and become a veterinarian. 4th Grade – Brennen Snyder – Brennen is the son of Chris and Lindsey Snyder of Mifflinburg. His favorite subject is math. Outside of school, Brennen enjoys playing baseball, basketball, football and wrestling. He also likes to hang out with his friends, swim and ride his bike. Brennen’s favorite way to relax is by watching Notre Dame football games, and in the future, he hopes to become a professional baseball player. 5th Grade – Addison Mackley – Addison is the daughter of Melanie Page and Matthew Mackley of Mifflinburg. Her favorite subjects are math, science and writing. Outside of school, Addison likes to explore, play softball, and enjoys playing with her kitten, Ollie. Addison’s favorite places to visit are Kalahari and Disney World in Florida. She relaxes by watching Netflix and eating popcorn. In the future, Addison wants to go to college and become a doctor. Congratulations to each one of you, and keep up the good work! 4 Mifflinburg Area School District December 1, 2020 PRINCIPAL HEGGENSTALLER ANNOUNCES STUDENTS OF THE MONTH Congratulations to the November 2020 Students of the Month! 3rd – Adalynn Smith – Adalynn is the daughter of Jackie Smith and Brett Smith of Mifflinburg. Her favorite subject is science. Outside of school, Adalynn participates in gymnastics and enjoys cooking, making bracelets and collecting Legos. She likes to go to the park and watches movies at home to relax. In the future, Adalynn would like to become a hair stylist. Overall, Adalynn likes to have fun and be silly, and she loves tacos! 4th – Celia Froese – Celia is the daughter of Christine Wiesel and Frak Froese of Mifflinburg. Her favorite subject is science. Celia enjoys playing soccer, baseball, cheerleading and participating in the youth group at her church. She also likes to draw and sing and play with her two dogs, Gabby and Ember. Her favorite place to visit is Las Vegas, Nevada. In the future, Celia hopes to become a teacher. 5th – Alaina Ulmer – Alaina is the daughter of Brian and Melanie Ulmer of Mifflinburg. Alaina’s favorite subject is reading. She plays the flute in the band and participates in art club. Outside of school, Alaina takes dance lessons and does cheerleading. She also enjoys reading and drawing. Alaina likes to spend time with her friends, and her favorite place to visit is the beach. In the future, Alaina would like to be a dancer or a dance teacher. 5 .
