Making a Sky Atlas
Appendix A Making a Sky Atlas Although a number of very advanced sky atlases are now available in print, none is likely to be ideal for any given task. Published atlases will probably have too few or too many guide stars, too few or too many deep-sky objects plotted in them, wrong- size charts, etc. I found that with MegaStar I could design and make, specifically for my survey, a “just right” personalized atlas. My atlas consists of 108 charts, each about twenty square degrees in size, with guide stars down to magnitude 8.9. I used only the northernmost 78 charts, since I observed the sky only down to –35°. On the charts I plotted only the objects I wanted to observe. In addition I made enlargements of small, overcrowded areas (“quad charts”) as well as separate large-scale charts for the Virgo Galaxy Cluster, the latter with guide stars down to magnitude 11.4. I put the charts in plastic sheet protectors in a three-ring binder, taking them out and plac- ing them on my telescope mount’s clipboard as needed. To find an object I would use the 35 mm finder (except in the Virgo Cluster, where I used the 60 mm as the finder) to point the ensemble of telescopes at the indicated spot among the guide stars. If the object was not seen in the 35 mm, as it usually was not, I would then look in the larger telescopes. If the object was not immediately visible even in the primary telescope – a not uncommon occur- rence due to inexact initial pointing – I would then scan around for it. -

Email: [email protected] Received 2009 July 19, accepted 2010 January 21 Abstract: The total number of true, likely and possible planetary nebulae (PN) now known in the Milky Way is nearly 3000, double the number known a decade ago. The new discoveries are a legacy of the recent availability of wide field, narrowband imaging surveys, primarily in the light of H-alpha. In this paper, we summarise the various PN discovery techniques, and give an overview of the many types of objects which mimic PN and which appear as contaminants in both Galactic and extragalactic samples. Much improved discrimination of classical PN from their mimics is now possible based on the wide variety of high-quality multiwavelength data sets that are now available. We offer improved taxonomic and observational definitions for the PN phenomenon based on evaluation of these better diagnostic capabilities. However, we note that evidence is increasing that the PN phenomenon is heterogeneous, and PN are likely to be formed from multiple evolutionary scenarios. In particular, the relationships between some collimated symbiotic outflows and bipolar PN remain uncertain. The Galactic Anticenter region hosts a a number of massive molecular cloud complexes, some of which are currently actively forming stars. Two major OB associations, Gem OB1 and Aur OB1, are found in this direction, each with numerous massive stars and a supernova remnant. The dominant region of star formation is cen- tered around the Sh 2-235 complex and the nearby regions AFGL 5142, 5144, and 5157 towards Aur OB1. Studies of these regions have long been affected by relatively poor distance determinations, although there is general consensus that most regions are lo- cated at distances between 1.5 and 2 kpc. A number of well-known, relatively isolated Herbig Ae/Be stars are found in this general direction, including RR Tau, HD 250550, and LkHα 208. 1. Overview The region towards the Galactic Anticenter is rich in molecular clouds and star forma- tion activity, although most is located at a considerable distance. In this chapter, we summarize key features of the principal regions of star formation out to approximately 2 kpc. A number of very interesting regions exist at larger distances, but those are be- yond the scope of this review. -

ARTICLE II Object The objects of the West Virginia Garden Club, Inc., shall be: 1. To operate on a non-profit basis and solely for benevolent, charitable, scientific, and educational purposes conducive to the well being of the community and useful to the public. 2. To study and teach all the aspects of the science and art of gardening. 3. To help preserve natural resources through protection of wild flowers, birds, forests, streams, scenic areas, historical and recreational localities. 4. To coordinate the interests of the federated garden clubs in the state, and to promote the organization of new clubs. 5. To encourage civic beauty, stimulate roadside improvement, and discourage unsightly objects along the high way. 6. To encourage the maintenance of state and local parks systems. 7. To cooperate with other agencies furthering interests of horticulture and conservation. 8. To restrict the activities of the corporation so that it shall not be used or operated for private profit and no property of the 1 corporation shall inure to the private profit of any member or special group or be used for any purposes other then those enumerated in (1) above. This organization is organized exclusively for charitable, scientific and educational purposes and all of the activities shall be in furtherance of such purposes. In the event of its dissolution, any remaining assets will be distributed only to non-profit organizations, which are at that time qualified for exemption from federal income tax as an organization described in 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. -

Daß diese Seiten eine längst überfällige Notwendigkeit sind, bestätigen uns die vielen positiven Rückmeldungen und Reaktionen auf die erste Ausgabe. interstellarum ist auch weiterhin bemüht, jene von der etablierten Astropresse des deutschsprachigen Raumes klaffend aufgerissene Lücke zu schließen: eine lesenswerte, informative und anregende Zeitschrift für den aktiven Beobachter zu sein. Wie gut wir dieses Loch zu schließen vermögen, werden die nächsten Monate zeigen. Helfen Sie deshalb mit, in- terstellarum zu einem echten Forum der aktiven Amateurastronomie im Deep-Sky-Be- reich zu machen. Für viele von Ihnen wird das vorliegende Heft das erste sein. Bereits drei Wochen nach (dem verspäteten) Erscheinen der ersten Ausgabe waren alle Hefte vergriffen. Um dieser verstärkten Nachfrage nachzukommen, wurde die Auflage dieser Ausgabe mehr als verdoppelt. Für alle "Erstleser" sei nochmals erwähnt, daß jede interstellarum-Ausgabe auf die je- weilige Jahreszeit abgestimmt ist und somit die meisten der besprochenen Objekte zum Auslieferungstermin am Abendhimmel zu beobachten sind. Ein Wort zur Orientierung der Abbildungen: soweit nicht anders angegeben ist Norden oben. Wir hoffen, daß die "Kinderkrankheiten", die die erste Ausgabe noch auszeichneten, nun nicht mehr auftreten. Eine Berichtigung der gröbsten Fauxpas' finden Sie auf Sei- te 71. Auf vielfachen Wunsch hin werden wir künftig für fast alle der vorgestellten Objekte Aufsuchkarten erstellen. Diese sollen es ermöglichen auch ohne 9m-Atlas zum Ziel zu gelangen; lediglich ein 6m-Atlas sollte zur groben Orientierung vorhanden sein. Zudem möchten wir den Vorschlag aufgreifen, die Karten direkt zum Beobachten mitnehmen zu können: Deshalb werden ab dieser Ausgabe die is-Aufsuchkarten nicht mehr im Heft abgedruckt sondern beigelegt. -

February flew by so fast it pretty much took my breath away—or was that the cold. Hopefully, everybody has thawed out by now and, maybe, just maybe, that which is in control of the weather will cut us some slack and give us some nice, cloudless and moonless nights without the sub-zero temps so we can go out an enjoy some winter sky viewing or imaging without risking our toes before the dreaded return of daylight saving time—which, unfortunately, is in March. Even though the month went by pretty quickly, we did manage to get in our Winter members observing night on the 7th of February. Our apologies for the conflicting nights listed in the last newsletter, this was mainly due to our trying to outsmart the weather and making changes to the date at the last minute and accidentally running the minutes from the December meeting instead of those for the January meeting.
