It is thus a distribution study, in line with others that have looked at the distribution of musical elements in Indonesia (Kunst 1939), the Philippines (Maceda 1998), Oceania (McLean 1979, 1994, 2014), and the region peripheral to the South China Sea (Revel 2013). With the exception of McLean, these studies have focused exclusively on material culture, namely musical instruments, tracing their geographical distribution and the vernacular terms associated with them. The aim has been to reveal cultural continuities and discontinuities and propose hypotheses about prehistoric settlement and culture contact in Insulindia and Oceania.

Migrant Musicality, Christian Composition, Backlash, and Boundaries in an Indonesian Province Made for Malays Nicholas J. Long Abstract The Riau Islands have a diverse Malay musical heritage, but also a population of extreme demographic diversity. This raises questions about the ways in which non- Malays might engage with creating and performing ‘Malay music’, and how such endeavours are received more widely. This paper explores how such issues affected the Trio Komodo, a Florinese music group resident in the Riau Islands.

  • Accessing Accuracy of Structural Performance on Basic Steps in Recording Malay Zapin Dance Movement Using Motion Capture
    J. Appl. Environ. Biol. Sci. , 7(11)165-173, 2017 ISSN: 2090-4274 Journal of Applied Environmental © 2017, TextRoad Publication and Biological Sciences www.textroad.com Accessing Accuracy of Structural Performance on Basic Steps in Recording Malay Zapin Dance Movement Using Motion Capture Norsimaa Mustaffa, Muhammad Zaffwan Idris Creative Multimedia Department, Faculty of Art, Computing and Creative Industry, Sultan Idris Education University, Perak, Malaysia Received: May 11, 2017 Accepted: August 26, 2017 ABSTRACT Traditional dances are deemed under the classification of intangible cultural heritage that could easily be threatened because of their fragility. The need to protect this valuable asset is imperative as it reflects the uniqueness of our generation’s identity and portrays the human development of any community. Dance is arguably the most complex entity to decipher or captured in notation, in still or moving state, because of its kinaesthetic nature. Hence, this paper presents the study of several basic steps based on the structural performance in the Malay dance called Zapin besides accessing accuracy in recording the movement by using motion capture. Zapin is one of the oldest traditional dances fusing the Hadrahmaut Arab dance with Malay performance styles. The objective of the venture is to preserve Zapin focusing on the steps in correspondence with the dance motifs. The recording and simulation of the movement can be virtually re-enacted in 3 dimension (3D) using Motion Capture (MoCap) technology. This technology enables movements to be viewed and analyzed in 3D from 360 degrees, making it an easy reference for viewers to observe and learners to emulate the movements.

  • Common Injuries Identified in Malay Dance Farah Fadzali, April 2021
Soultari Amin Farid, Choreographer, Arts Educator and Researcher Common injuries identified in Malay Dance Farah Fadzali, April 2021 The traditional dance forms of the Malay communities in Singapore are wide-ranging and diverse: Zapin, Joget, Asli, and Inang are just some of the many examples amongst others. However, the underlying beauty of this traditional dance is a series of complex and dynamic footwork, performed repetitively to achieve pinpoint finesse in its execution. Together with the countless hours of practice, it places extremely high stress and strain on the dancer’s lower limbs like the foot and ankle. Along with dance practice lasting several hours a day, dancers often risk stress fractures and other overuse injuries. In this article, we will look at some common injuries identified in Malay dance. Zapin: Elegant, soft and subtle body movements. Joget: Performed on a quick tempo with duple and triple beat divisions while dancers make fast rhythmic hand and foot movements. Asli: Owing to its soft and gentle rhythm, Asli is a graceful dance form where every movement has a meaning. Inang: Inang is usually performed with grounded and graceful foot movements. Long scarves are also held in hands like props while performing, which add to the charm of this dance form. __________________________________________________________________________________________ Disclaimer: *SCAPE strongly recommends that you consult with your physician before executing any exercises.
