Complete Index of Common Names: Supplement to Tropical Timbers of the World (AH 607) by Nancy Ross Preface Since it was published in 1984, Tropical Timbers of the World has proven to be an extremely valuable reference to the properties and uses of tropical woods. It has been particularly valuable for the selection of species for specific products and as a reference for properties information that is important to effective pro- cessing and utilization of several hundred of the most commercially important tropical wood timbers. If a user of the book has only a common or trade name for a species and wishes to know its properties, the user must use the index of common names beginning on page 451. However, most tropical timbers have numerous common or trade names, depending upon the major region or local area of growth; furthermore, different species may be know by the same common name. Herein lies a minor weakness in Tropical Timbers of the World. The index generally contains only the one or two most frequently used common or trade names. If the common name known to the user is not one of those listed in the index, finding the species in the text is impossible other than by searching the book page by page. This process is too laborious to be practical because some species have 20 or more common names. This supplement provides a complete index of common or trade names. This index will prevent a user from erroneously concluding that the book does not contain a specific species because the common name known to the user does not happen to be in the existing index. -

Departamento de Dermatología Hospital General Fecha de aceptación: Agosto 2009 Resumen NTECEDENTES: Las fitodermatitis son frecuentes en la práctica dermatológica. En la península de Yucatán observamos entre otras, la ocasionada por METOPIUM BROWNEI cuyo componente tóxico es el urushiol. No hay Acomunicaciones previas de esta dermatosis en la literatura revisada. OBJETIVO: Identificar las principales características clínicas de la dermatitis reaccional por METOPIUM BROWNEI. METODOLOGÍA: Estudio retrospectivo de 20 casos. Se registraron las siguientes variables: edad, sexo, ocupación, sitio de exposición, tiempo de aparición de las primeras manifestaciones, topografía, morfología y diagnóstico clínico. No se realizaron pruebas epicutáneas. RESULTADOS: 65% fueron de sexo masculino, con un promedio de edad de 25.1 años. No se documentó una ocupación predominante, la selva fue el sitio de encuentro con el árbol (90%) y el tiempo de inicio de las manifestaciones fue en promedio, de 2.5 días luego de la exposición. Las reacciones tipo eccema fueron las más comunes. En ausencia de pruebas de parche, se realizó el diagnóstico clínico probable de dermatitis por contacto alérgica en 9 de los 20 pacientes (45%), en 30% tanto irritativa como alérgica, en 1% fotosensibilidad y en 1% dermatitis por contacto aerotransportada. CONCLUSIONES: Las reacciones a METOPIUM BROWNEI corresponden principalmente a un probable proceso alérgico local, sistémico, con fotosensibilidad o aerotransportado. -

Professor Moraes Rego,ˆ s/n, 50670-901 - Recife, PE, Brazil ABSTRACT Frequency and efficiency of pollinator visits strongly influence the reproductive success of self-incompatible plants. We investigated the breeding and pollination systems of Hancornia speciosa, a small tree that produces fleshy berries used in the Brazilian fruit industry. Observation and experiments were carried out in Northeastern Brazil. Thirty-three species of the visitor were recorded. Hawkmoths (Sphingidae), bees (Euglossini and Centridini), and butterflies (Nymphalidae and Hesperiidae) with long mouth parts were effective pollinators of H. speciosa. Access to nectar, the only reward for flower visitors, is determined by corolla tube length. Nylon threads of various diameters and dried mouth parts from a number of flower visitors were used in experiments to simulate flower visits. The number of pollen grains removed during such simulated visits showed no significant difference. Although xenogamic, H. speciosa presented a low pollen/ovule ratio (77). This might be related to the high efficiency of its pollination mechanism. Flowers of H. speciosa had 76 ovules on average. Seed set varied from 1 to 25, indicating that individual flowers received different amounts of outcross-pollen. Fruit production of hand cross-pollinated flowers increased by 90 percent when compared to natural pollination, suggesting pollinator limitation of H. speciosa. También se presentan imágenes detalladas de las plantas, sus estructuras diferenciales, taxonómicamente hablando, y su hábitat. Además, a través del trabajo de campo, el cual fue cuidadosamente coordinado y planificado, se colectaron 711 números de Herbario, sus duplicados, de los cuales 248 colectas, corresponden a otras especies de plantas encontradas dentro de las comunidades vegetales estudiadas. -
