QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER OF THE COUNCIL ON VOLUNTEER SERVICES ASSOCIATION

December 2019

SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST I have been busy getting organized and work- ing on the next Conference with Cathy. I also visited Effingham Health System in Springfield in the Southeast District for their Fiftieth Anni- President 1 versary. While I was there, a volunteer was “Presidents” 3 asked to give the Invocation and this is what she said right off the cuff. I later asked her to Conference 4-6 write it down, so I could share it as I am with you in the Courier. I think so many times we Awards Winners 5 lose sight of what our mission truly is as volun- Ads 8 & 12 teers. Her words state it beautifully. Her name is Shirley Wright and this is what she said. Contact Info 17—20 We are volunteers. That’s what we do. The uniforms we wear represent an as- Courier Info 21 sociation of kindred spirits. We know, encourage and care for each other. We relate our life experiences. When one shares a joy, we rejoice together. When one grieves, we all grieve. That’s what we do.

We are present with those that are in our care. We are volunteers. We form bonds with those we serve. Our interactions with each one assures them that they are in a safe place. They leave us comforted, we leave with grateful hearts.

In addition to the hours we serve in one specific locale, our actions as volun- teers have become a part of our daily routine. It’s just our way of life. We vol- untarily take that stray buggy back inside the store, we hold doors open for oth- ers, we give a smile to those frowning. We assist in whatever opportunities we are given and they ARE opportunities. That’s what we do. We are volunteers.

Congratulations for a wonderful Conference and 60th Anniversary Party to the Southwest District under the capable leadership of Martha Greene-Tucker, Conference Chair and her two wonderful District Direc- tors, Linda Holloway and Joan Newpeck. I leave these thoughts with all of you and I wish you the happiest of Christmas and the new year ahead.

Time has really flown by since the 2019 Conference. I have been busy resting and sleeping. I am excited about serving as the COVS President Elect. The main focus this year will be on Healthcare. I have already shared information with the District Directors and I hope they have passed it on to the Volunteer Presidents and Healthcare Advocates to be shared with each individual volunteer. November news clips are brought to you by CarePort Health. They are the leading care coordination network with providers connected across the US. Some of the articles selected are intended to feature news about GHA members (that’s you) with healthcare topics. Articles featured this month were: Archbold Medical Center was recognized with a Distinguished Service Award. The article stated that Arch- bold has taken extraordinary measures to remain one of the most vital partners in providing quality, up-to- date, and necessary health science education. Another: GHA news clip “UGA looks to close health care workforce gap”. Also from Augusta, MCG Research- ers identify link between high glucose and function of circadian clocks in cells. From Macon, “Holiday season perfect time to become organ donor”. Please take time to read, each article gives timely news items and provides valuable resources for keeping in touch with all over the state of Georgia and what they are doing in Health care. We are in the middle of the Holiday Season, “May each of you have a safe and Merry Christmas and a Hap- py New Year (2020). Martha First Vice President Conference Chair — Cathy Hefner I am super excited to be your 2020 COVS Conference Chairperson. We all en- joyed an extra special 60th Anniversary Conference due to the efforts of Martha Greene-Tucker and the Southwest District and District Directors, Linda Holloway and Joan Newpeck. The 2020 Conference will be hosted by the Central District with the guidance of their District Directors, Joyce Barrett and Jimmy Hall. This year the theme will be the OCEAN with a hint of Celtic flare, which will add some interesting events to the conference. The Conference Planning committee met in Macon, the first part of November, and it was a very successful meeting. What an enthusiastic group! Ideas were flying around like mad! As promised, comments from the survey sheets were discussed, and we already have implemented some of these ideas into our program. We have listened to what COVS members are suggesting and the ideas are endless. I am looking forward to the next few months of planning with a WONDERFUL group of volunteers! CEO of the 2019 Year, Trent Lind of Eastside Medical Center in CEO of The Year 2019 Snellville, Georgia. He stipulated in an interview with Gwinnett Maga- zine that at “ Eastside, our goal is to be the best place to receive care, the best place to practice medicine, and the best place to work… even though we’re expanding and growing, we’re still a community hospital, so we want to be engaged with our community.” Trent became the CEO at Eastside Medical Center in 2016 and because of his proactive involve-

ment in the hospital and its community, the hospital has done a com- plete turn around from a place very few wanted to practice to a hospital where physicians returned. In fact, Eastside, under Lind’s guidance be- came a top ten safe hospital in Georgia. Not only does Trent support his staff, but he also supports his volunteers and patients. Whether it is with a hug or a kind word of encouragement, Trent is a visible Adminis- trator with an open-door policy.

MVS(DVS) of the 2019-year, Carol Kratochvil of Northside Hospi- tal , who once a volunteer, gained the admiration and respect of Northside Atlanta’s Hospital Administration, staff and volunteers. She inspires and encourages teamwork both within the Auxiliary and the hospital. She has been the force behind the tremendous respect on the part of hospital leadership towards the Auxiliary. She is available to all and is welcoming who exhibits great listening and organization skills. She respects the volunteers their opinions and talents. She makes the volunteers feel as if they are being heard and valued. On top of it all, Carol is results oriented and has been the driving force of many projects such as Screen Atlanta Mammography Mobil Van.

Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital has won the Community of Conscience Award for a Large Hospital for 2019.

Their project included starting a Community Care Clinic for those is the Athens Georgia community which could not get quality affordable medical care. The Auxiliary has raised funds for the Community Clinic which have directly impact- ed patient care. The donations established a charitable pharmacy fund that patients can use until other financial resources are available. As well, the funds raised helped to purchase various items of equipment for the clinic as well. Charla Summers presented the awards. 6 COUNCIL COURIER VOLUME 62 NO. 1 (1958—2020) DECEMBER 2019

King, Jr. 10 COUNCIL COURIER VOLUME 62 NO. 1 (1958—2020) DECEMBER 2019 Jean Cory and the Jean Cory Youth Scholarship Isn’t it interesting that when the President of the COVS completes her term we are ready to move on to the next Administration. How often do we reflect on who that President was and what she accomplished for our organization. This led me to go back and look at the work Jean Cory performed while she served her term. Jean was our 21st President for the years 1994 -1996. Jean encouraged Council Members to enhance their organizations/Volunteer Groups with her 5 point star of management namely, Teamwork, Vision, Leadership, Commitment, and Education. She also organized the first fund raising Vendor shows which were included in the Annual Conference agenda. Special emphasis was placed on the Youth Volunteers and the Annual Youth Conference was initiat- ed at Wesleyan College where the Shining Star was established which was to be awarded to an outstanding Youth Volunteer and presented at the Annual Conference’. These are just a few of Jean’s many accomplishments. As the world changed, so did our young people. It was decided that a Youth Scholarship might better serve them than the conference was appearing to do.as attendance at the Youth Conference had dwindled considerably and we were experiencing great losses. I be- lieve this Scholarship is appropriately titled. December is quickly approaching and we will soon place applications for the 2019-2020 Jean Cory Youth Scholarship in all member hospitals with teen programs. This year we will award 6 scholarships of $1000.00 each. The competition promises to be tough therefore it might be a good idea for Volunteer Presidents/Scholarship Chairs to begin looking at your candi- dates. Please urge them to apply. Scholarship applications this year are due March 15,2020. It is open to Teen Volunteers who are graduating in the Spring of that year. You must have served at least 50 hours of service and possess at least a 3.0 grade point average. Further application information and forms can be found on the COVS website, https://www.gha.org/COVS. All applications must be carefully prepared and only the application from the website is acceptable. Presidents/ Chairpersons will be given additional information by their District Directors as time gets closer. Millie Faulkner, Chairperson

Colquitt Regional Volunteers, known as Bluebirds, recently held their annual Christmas in July Toy Drive. Coming to the hospital can certainly be scary to a little one, so toys make for a more cheerful distraction. The Bluebirds collected toys throughout the month and delivered them to Colquitt Regional’s pediatric nurses. Shown are, standing, from left, are Betty Shiflett, Verna Johnson, Ophelia Allen, James Phillips, Pat Gordon, and Dorothy Blount; seated are, from left, Shirley Causey, Genelle O’Neal and Vera Clark. Eastside Medical Center has been collecting soda can tabs for over two years to help fami- lies stay in the Atlanta area Ronald McDonald Houses for free while an ill child is being treat- ed. This year alone, the Auxiliary has collected enough tabs to house families for 250 days for free! The auxiliary holds a contest among the service areas within the hospital every quarter. After the tabs are weighed the winning area receives homemade baked goodies for the de- partment. Then, it starts all over again. With those kinds of statistics, The Eastside Medical Center Auxiliary will continue collecting tabs for a long time. After all, that’s what we’re about—helping others.

As many of you know, you can go to our website gha.org/covs and read the Courier, make copies, and send the web address to others. I suggest you put the address in your “favorites”. Most of the time--gha.org/covs will get you to the home page--and see the Directory and go down to Council Courier. You will then need to click on the month—this one being December, 2019. Back issues are still on the website—I hope!? Help friends to know how to use their computers or tablets. The success of the Courier depends on “YOU”—sending me information to put in the next publication. I receive your Newsletters and I truly enjoy reading them and I “really do read them”! I see articles that would be very interesting to everyone, and if I can find out who to get in touch with to send me info--photographs, etc., ”you may become famous!?” You may notice that some of the photos in this publications are not as clear as could be—-this is because I have made a copy of them from your newsletter, and that affects clarity. You can send me your photo(s) as an email attachment and they will be clearer. When you send me news and photographs: Please do your text using Microsoft Word and send as an attachment. If it is no more than four or five lines of info, you can send the information in an email or US mail, I can type it. Photos should be sent as attachments or the true copy. I can scan photos most of the time! Often with these little tablets and cell phones--I may not be able to rescue the script or photos from them. Some- times, a hospital DVS will send a news item in PDF--this is great, but sometimes I can’t always copy a photo. With some of your newsletters, I’ve been able to copy some of your photos. Some for “some reason, I can’t”! I can not use a “newspaper article”, it will not copy well enough. We are interested in what you are doing, and we want every Auxiliary to send--if you are large or small, to let us know what is going on in your Auxiliary that would be of interest and give ideas to others. Deadlines: December—November 10 (because of Confer- ence). March—February 1. June—May 1. — September —August 1. Information that the Courier does not use—such as: Volunteer of the month or year ( unless they have been in the Auxiliary for many years/ maybe charter member and have put in many volun- teer hours.) We don’t use Annual Meetings and installation of officers; recognition of Volunteer Week—unless it was very unusual!?; birthdays, new grandmothers, luncheons, grandchildren graduating from college—OK!? You got the idea!? These are for your Auxiliary Newsletter! The Courier wants to know how you raise funds! Donations to hospital, groups, etc., things your auxiliary does in the community, youth programs, spe- cial activities, developing your Gift Shop; and how to get new members. Take some good photos. Remember to “smile”—and take a little time to get a good picture. When we see you give a large check to the hospital—we want to know how you raised the money!? Tell about what your volunteers do at the hospital—what areas do they volunteer? Get some photos, in their uniform, while they are volunteering. Do you have youth volun- teers? What do you do for your community? Things you may have done to improve your Auxiliary. Do you have a member that is very active in many ways in the Auxiliary and also in your community? Please always be looking for something to send to me—to put in the Courier. If I have missed something you have emailed me to put in—never hesitate to let me know! (I do get “a lot of emails”!!) Refresh me!
