Palaeontologia Electronica palaeo-electronica.org A fish fauna from the lowermost Bartonian of the Transylvanian Basin, Romania Nicolae Trif, Vlad Codrea, and Viorel Arghiuș ABSTRACT A fish fauna newly discovered in the middle Eocene marine sediments cropping out near the village of Luna de Sus, Romania, completes the fossil record of the East- ern European region. Teeth belonging to 15 species of Chondrichthyes and two spe- cies of Actinopterygii are herein recorded from the lowermost Bartonian deposits. These Paleogene fish document a marine tropical environment of medium deep waters in the northwestern area of the Transylvanian Basin. The vertical distributions of extant equivalent taxa allow a sea depth estimation of 100 to 200 m. The warm climate is doc- umented by both the present faunal assemblage and previous palynological studies. It is important to note the presence of the scarcely known and poorly understood pycno- dont species Phacodus punctatus and of the oldest representative of Labridae from this Carpathian area. The diversity of the fauna was found to be average compared to some areas from Western Europe or North Africa, but it falls within the regional diver- sity range of the Eastern European localities. Fieldwork conducted in Pontotoc County,Mississippi, targeted two sites containing montmorillonitic sand in the Maastrichtian Ripley Formation. U-Pb detrital zircon (DZ) ages from these sands (n = 649) ranged from Mesoarchean (~2870 Ma) to Pennsylvanian (~305 Ma) and contained ~91% Appalachian-derived grains, including Appalachian–Ouachita, Gondwanan Terranes, and Grenville source terranes. Other minor source regions include the Mid-Continent Granite–Rhyolite Province, Yavapai–Mazatzal, Trans-Hudson/Penokean, and Superior. This indicates that sediment sourced from the Appalachian Foreland Basin (with very minor input from a northern or northwestern source) was being routed through the Mississippi Embayment (MSE) in the Maastrichtian. We recognize six lithofacies in the field areas interpreted as barrier island to shelf environments. Statistically significant differences between DZ populations and clay mineralogy from both sites indicate that two distinct fluvial systems emptied into a shared back-barrier setting, which experienced volcanic ash input. -

Bait station surveys were conducted to determine distribution and population trends of bears in north, central, and south Georgia during July of 2008. Results of these surveys, expressed as percent bait station hits, were 71.04%, 45%, and 35.8% for stations in north, central, and south Georgia respectively. Concurrently, harvest in the north, central, and south Georgia populations was 314, 0, and 57 bears, respectively. The black bear (Ursus americanus) symbolizes the wild qualities of Georgia. Prior to the eighteenth century bears were common in Georgia. However, habitat loss, unrestricted hunting and overall degradation of habitat because of human development contributed to a Fig. 1 – Black Bear Distribution serious population decline. Resources wildlife management practices, improvements in law enforcement, and social changes all have contributed to the recovery of bear populations. In Georgia, we have 3 more/less distinct bear populations: 1) north Georgia associated with the Southern Appalachians 2) central Georgia along the Ocmulgee River drainage 3) southeast Georgia in/around the Okefenokee Swamp (U. a. floridanus) (Fig. 1). All three populations are believed to be either stable or slightly increasing. -

Five stratigraphic sections in Grenada County were measured and described. Twenty-one sand and sandstone samples, and 2 mud samples were collected from all sections. Textural analyses were performed on all 23 samples to determine their lithologic properties. Petrographic descriptions and modal analyses were performed on thin sections made from the 21 sand and sandstone samples, and 400 grains were point counted in each sample. -

Dooly County and Liberty County have camp meetings in opera- tion and there may be others as far as I know. Also Tatnall County. The Gaslcin REV. GREEN TAYLOR Springs camp meet- A distinguished camp meeting preacher ing was started about before the war. 1895. Gaslrin Springs is situated about two miles east of Douglas on the east side of the Seventeen-Mile Creek. Mr. Joel Gaskin donat,ed four acres of land to certain trustees named in the deed with the expressed provision that the said land was to be used as camp meeting purposes. The lands to revert to the donor when it ceased to be used for camp meeting purposes. This deed carried with it the right to use the water from Gaskin Springs for the camp meetings. A large pavillion was built near the spring. 'llhe pavillioii would seat several hundred people. A bridge was built across the Seventeen-Mile Creek for pec1estria.n~ between Douglas and the Springs. Many families from Douglas, Broxton, and people from surrounding counties built houses, where their families moved and kept open house during the camp meeting times for ten days once a year. The camp meeting was under the supervision of the Methodist Church. The pre- siding elder of the Douglas church had charge of the camp grounds and selected the preachers. However, ministers of all denominations were invited to preach. Several services would be held each day. -

United States Department ofthe Interior FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE Texas Chenier Plain NWR Complex June 15, 2017 Dear Reviewer: This is to provide notification of availability of a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Draft Environmental Assessment for review and comment. The Draft Environmental Assessment addresses the issuance of an Operational Permit by the USFWS for two proposed oil and natural gas drilling and production project on the Mcfaddin National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) in Jefferson County, Texas. The project has been proposed by OLEUM Exploration, LLC ofBrodheadsville, Pennsylvania. The company possesses valid leases to explore and/or develop oil and gas reserves underlying the refuge from the rightful mineral owners. The purpose for the proposed Federal action is to insure that mineral rights holders have reasonable access to develop their non-Federal oil and gas interests and minimize impacts to refuge resources to the extent practicable under the USFWS's 50 CFR Part 29, Subpart D regulations for managing non-Federal oil and gas on USFWS administered lands and waters. Issuance ofthe Operations Permit in the end should protect the human environment in such a way as to further the Refuge's efforts to achieve its established purposes, and the general resource conservation mission ofthe USFWS. Bulk sampling and extensive, systematic surface collecting of the Coon Creek Member of the Ripley Formation (early Maastrichtian) at the Blue Springs locality and primarily bulk sampling of the Owl Creek Formation (late Maastrichtian) at the Owl Creek type locality, both in northeast Mississippi, USA, have produced the largest and most highly diversified actinopterygian otolith (ear stone) assemblage described from the Mesozoic of North America. The 3,802 otoliths represent 30 taxa of bony fishes representing at least 22 families. In addition, there were two different morphological types of lapilli, which were not identifiable to species level.
