From the smallest to the greatest, from the richest to the poorest, everyone eventually dies. But what happens after death? Can you know for sure? BY KEVIN D. DENEE enjamin Franklin wrote, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Every minute on earth, B 108 people die. Ultimately, everyone dies. It is not a matter of if, but when. Sadly, and due to a wide variety of reasons and circumstances, some seek death, considering it the only solution. Others try to delay the inevitable through good health. Still others tragically lose their lives through time and chance. Sometimes disease or other illnesses bring a death sentence, leaving the person with nothing to do but wait for the end. Many view the end of their lives with uneasiness. They ponder, “What’s next?”— “Will I live again?”—“Is this it?”—“Will I ever see my loved ones again?”—“Where am I going after this life?” Photo: KRT In contrast, others view death with fear of the unknown. Some fear the process and the suffering that may accompany death. Others, racked with guilt, have a different type of fear—fear that they will burn forever in “hell fire.” Whatever the viewpoint, feelings or circumstances of one’s life—ultimately, life ends. Because of this unavoidable reality, every person at some point in his or her life thinks about the subject of death. -

135 Chapter 6: Professional Foundations Theory Becomes Practice I moved to New York and started a new life in a very strange city. Chappell Music secured an apartment for me in the London Terrace complex in Chelsea near the Hudson River. It was a monumental architectural structure with an indoor swimming pool, underground garage, and an observation deck on the roof overlooking the river. All of my energy was focused on getting Elizabeth I (Foster & Spangler, 1972) written and up and running off-Broadway by spring. When I was not working on the show, I went to theatre events and performances and tried to network with recent graduates of CMU seeking their fame and fortune in New York City. Elizabeth I (Foster & Spangler, 1972) was scheduled to open off-Broadway at the Sheridan Square Theatre the end of March. However, the production already running in that venue was extended, and suddenly this off-Broadway theatre for which our production was designed was not available. The backers came to a rehearsal and decided the show was so promising that we would take it directly to Broadway where the Lyceum Theatre was available. We opened for previews on March 28, 1972, and the pressure was on. The set and staging as designed for the thrust (three quarter in the round) stage at the intimate Sheridan Square was no longer feasible. How were we to fit that production into a large proscenium situation? We rehearsed long and hard to bring back the intimacy lost in the transfer. I was not responding well to the stress. -

Solihull School Presents 20th - 24th March 2012 Bushell Hall After Tevye leaves, Perchik rejoices his good fortune, admitting to Hodel, “Now I Have Everything.” Confused by the changes taking place in his world, Tevye for the fi rst time asks Golde “Do You Love Me?” Eventually, Hodel’s strong love for Perchik compels her to leave her family and travel “Far from the Home I Love” in order to be with her beloved in Siberia. Chava, the third daughter, secretly begins to see a young Russian gentile, Fyedka. Although Tevye has weathered the unexpected courtships of Tzeitel and Hodel with dignity, he is unable to tolerate this further and more radical defi ance of tradition. Chava’s contemplation of marrying outside of the Jewish faith is a violation of his religious beliefs, and Tevye vehemently forbids her to continue the relationship with Fyedka. When she persists, Tevye, who can bend no farther, banishes her from the family, refusing to acknowledge Chava as his daughter. By this time, the Tsar has ordered that all Jews evacuate their homes, and the village reluctantly begins to pack their belongings. Knowing that she may never see her parents and sisters again, Chava returns briefl y for a fi nal reconciliation, SYNOPSIS explaining that Fyedka and she are also moving away from Anatevka because they cannot remain amongst people who treat others with such callousness. The place is Anatevka, a village in Tsarist Russia. The time is 1905, the eve of the revolution. The musical opens with the Although Golde cannot challenge her husband’s edict to ignore Chava’s overtures, Tzeitel consoles her younger sister by pulling haunting strains of a fi ddler perched precariously on a roof. -

AND THE WORLD GOES ‘ROUND Music by John Kander: Lyrics by Fred Ebb: Conceived by Scott Ellis, Susan Stroman and David Thompson Westside Theatre - Off-Broadway - March 18, 1991 (408 perfs) SYNOPSIS "Rehearsals had been under way for nearly a month. In another week, we'd be in the Westside Theatre on West 43rd Street. On this particular day, John and Fred were coming to the studio. Of course, their appearance wasn't at all unusual. They were one of us. Even so, every few days we sat them down and showed them our progress. We wanted to make sure our interpretation of the number matched their own interpretation. Composers and lyricists are notorious for wanting their songs sung in a very particular way. For some reason, they think they know how a song is intended to sound. We were slightly apprehensive because we had been tinkering with one of their best known songs, Cabaret. We had changed not only the melody but the words as well. Our intention, unlike our intention for most of the other songs in the show, was to find a new way to present the song: to make it different-fresh-and as exciting as it must have been the first time it was ever performed. Now it was time to see if we had succeeded. John and Fred arrived. The performers stood around the piano and sang David Loud's new arrangement. When they had finished, a few moments passed. Nothing. Maybe this time we had gone too far. Finally, Fred broke the silence and said with a broad smile, "Well, you made the old turkey gobble again." Scott Ellis, Susan Stroman and I began working on And the World Goes 'Round just after finishing the New York revival of Kander and Ebb's Flora, the Red Menace. -
