Some Observations on the Weddings of Tokugawa Shogun’s Daughters – Part 1 Abstract In this study I shall discuss the marriage politics of Japan's early ruling families (mainly from the 6th to the 12th centuries) and the adaptation of these practices to new circumstances by the leaders of the following centuries. Marriage politics culminated with the founder of the Edo bakufu, the first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616). To show how practices continued to change, I shall discuss the weddings given by the fifth shogun sunaT yoshi (1646-1709) and the eighth shogun Yoshimune (1684-1751). The marriages of Tsunayoshi's natural and adopted daughters reveal his motivations for the adoptions and for his choice of the daughters’ husbands. The marriages of Yoshimune's adopted daughters show how his atypical philosophy of rulership resulted in a break with the earlier Tokugawa marriage politics. -

International Journal of Korean History (Vol.18 No.2, Aug. 2013) 31 Research Trends in Japan on the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592(Imjin War) 1 Nakano Hitoshi* Foreword The Japanese invasion of Korea in the late 16th Century is also called the Chosŏn (Joseon) Campaign or the Bunroku Keicho Offensive in Japan or the Imjin (Jp., Jinshin) War. In Japan, studies of the event have been actively conducted since the Edo period. There is a large amount of aca- demic research also in the early modern period. A historic review of the Bunroku Keicho Offensive that I wrote in regard of Japan in the early modern period appeared in the Report of the Second Round of the Korea- Japan Commission for the Joint Study of History, Subcommittee-2 (2010). Here, I intend to focus on recent research trends in Japan. Therefore, please refer to that previous article for discussions carried on in the period preceding Shōwa. In the main text, I intend to outline the research trends up to the 1970s, which relates to what I am asked to do, and then review the state of research in the 1980s and thereafter. Part of this will overlap with the contents of the previous article. Abstract Visual and Material Culture at Hōkyōji Imperial Convent: The Significance of “Women’s Art” in Early Modern Japan by Sharon Mitsuko Yamamoto Doctor of Philosophy in History of Art University of California, Berkeley Professor Gregory Levine, Chair This dissertation focuses on the visual and material culture of Hōkyōji Imperial Buddhist Convent (Hōkyōji ama monzeki jiin) during the Edo period (1600-1868). Situated in Kyoto and in operation since the mid-fourteenth century, Hōkyōji has been the home for women from the highest echelons of society—the nobility and military aristocracy—since its foundation. The objects associated with women in the rarefied position of princess-nun offer an invaluable look into the role of visual and material culture in the lives of elite women in early modern Japan. Art associated with nuns reflects aristocratic upbringing, religious devotion, and individual expression. As such, it defies easy classification: court, convent, sacred, secular, elite, and female are shown to be inadequate labels to identify art associated with women. This study examines visual and material culture through the intersecting factors that inspired, affected, and defined the lives of princess-nuns, broadening the understanding of the significance of art associated with women in Japanese art history. -

From Ieyasu to Yoshinao
2021 Summer Special Exhibition From Ieyasu to Yoshinao The Transition to a Powerful Pre-Modern State July 17 (Sat.) - September 12 (Sun.), 2021 INTRODUCTION Striving through the sengoku (Warring States) period, Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) finally achieved the unification of the whole country. Yoshinao (1601-1650), the ninth son of Ieyasu, was assigned to govern the Owari domain during the era of peace. The two were father and son, yet they lived in contrasting times. Yoshinao, who inherited a large fortune of assets and texts from Ieyasu, established the foundations of the Owari domain and led Nagoya to prosperity. Focusing on the principles of their rule, passed down from Ieyasu to Yoshinao, this exhibition traces their lives, their administration, and Yoshinao’s feelings towards Ieyasu, as observed in historical documents and inherited objects. Part 1 Tokugawa Ieyasu, Toyotomi Family, and Tokugawa Yoshinao [ Exhibits Number: 1-42 ] Exhibition Rooms at Hosa Library [Section 1] Ieyasu during the Age of the Warring States: the Eve of Yoshinao’s Birth This section deals with the dramatic changes that occurred in the latter part of Ieyasu’s life, spanning the battle of Nagakute in 1584—in which Ieyasu and Nobukatsu (the second son of Nobunaga) fought Hideyoshi after Nobunaga’s death in 1582, Ieyasu’s subsequent vassalage to Hideyoshi, and the battle of Sekigahara in 1600. [Section 2] Yoshinao during the Age of the Warring States After the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi on the 18th of the 8th month of 1598, Ieyasu increasingly came into conflict with Hideyoshi’s heir, Hideyori, and his vassals of western Japan, led by Ishida Mitsunari. -

Tokugawa Yoshimune versus Tokugawa Muneharu: Rival Visions of Benevolent Rule by Tim Ervin Cooper III A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Mary Elizabeth Berry, Chair Professor Irwin Scheiner Professor Susan Matisoff Fall 2010 Abstract Tokugawa Yoshimune versus Tokugawa Muneharu: Rival Visions of Benevolent Rule by Tim Ervin Cooper III Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Mary Elizabeth Berry, Chair This dissertation examines the political rivalry between the eighth Tokugawa shogun, Yoshimune (1684‐1751, r. 1716‐45), and his cousin, the daimyo lord of Owari domain, Tokugawa Muneharu (1696‐1764, r. 1730‐39). For nearly a decade, Muneharu ruled Owari domain in a manner that directly contravened the policies and edicts of his cousin, the shogun. Muneharu ignored admonishments of his behavior, and he openly criticized the shogun’s Kyōhō era (1716‐36) reforms for the hardship that they brought people throughout Japan. Muneharu’s flamboyance and visibility transgressed traditional status boundaries between rulers and their subjects, and his lenient economic and social policies allowed commoners to enjoy the pleasures and profits of Nagoya entertainment districts that were expanding in response to the Owari lord’s personal fondness for the floating world. Ultimately, Muneharu’s fiscal extravagance and moral lenience—benevolent rule (jinsei), as he defined it—bankrupted domain coffers and led to his removal from office by Yoshimune. Although Muneharu’s challenge to Yoshimune’s political authority ended in failure, it nevertheless reveals the important role that competing notions of benevolence (jin) were coming to play in the rhetoric of Tokugawa rulership. -

July 17 (Sat.) - September 12 (Sun.), 2021 November 13 (Sat.) - December 12 (Sun.), 2021 Summer Special Exhibition Special Exhibits From Ieyasu to Yoshinao: National Treasure, The Tale of Genji Illustrated Handscrolls: 2021 The Transition to a Powerful Pre-Modern State Special Unveiling of All Fifteen Newly Restored Volumes January - December Exhibition Rooms at Hōsa Library and Exhibition Rooms 7 at The Tokugawa Art Museum Exhibition Rooms 7-9 at The Tokugawa Art Museum Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), the final national unifier, and his son Yoshinao (1600-1650), who was assigned to govern Exhibition Schedule the Owari domain during the time of peace, lived contrasting lives. Focusing on the ruling policies THE TOKUGAWA ART MUSEUM that were passed down from Ieyasu to Yoshinao, HŌSA LIBRARY CITY of NAGOYA this exhibition traces the path of their lives, as well as Yoshinao's feelings toward Ieyasu through their Restoration of the full fifteen-scroll set of the Tokugawa Art personal effects and historical materials. Museum's National Treasure “The Tale of Genji Illustrated <Portrait of Tokugawa Ieyasu Handscrolls” and its remounting to the original handscroll as a Shintō Deity Tōshō-daigongen> format were completed in 2020. In commemoration of this Traditionally attributed to Kanō Tan'yū Edo period, 17th c. accomplishment, the complete set will be unveiled to the public in The Tokugawa Art Museum this special two-part rotating exhibit.
