  • Small Community Dances of Death in Central Switzerland (Hasle
eSharp Issue 7 Faith, Belief and Community Dances of Death in the Small Parishes of Rural Lucerne Rolf P. Dreier (Erasmus University) The small Swiss merchant-town of Lucerne and the remote neighbouring valley of Entlebuch display a striking density of monumental Dances of Death, a memento mori art-form displaying a representation of all social ranks of society.1 Lucerne houses not less than three of these, and the Entlebuch region – in Wolhusen and Hasle – another two examples. How can this be explained? They must be the most sinful places in seventeenth- century Switzerland! No other conclusion is possible, following the widespread assumption that Dances of Death served one purpose only: filling its morally-mislead audience with awe and fear in order to urge everyone to prepare themselves for the unforeseeable moment of Death. But is this dramatic teaching really the only purpose of Dances of Death, especially in the small communities of Wolhusen and Hasle? The following description and analysis focus on the peculiarities of those two Dances of Death to place them in their local context. I will relate them to the cultural and religious capital Lucerne, which I expect influenced them on a major level, and I will look for any local adaptations of the art-form. How culturally dependent were they on the capital that was only a day’s walk away? Of course, this article cannot provide an integral and holistic view on the interactive development of Dances of Death all over Europe; it is solely an illustrative example of local agency in religious, artistic and political matters.

Entlebuch Biosphere Reserve, Switzerland Prepared by Hambrey Consulting for DEFRA Ref: CR 0393 March 2008 Hambrey Consulting www.hambreyconsulting.co.uk [email protected] 1 2 Kristianstads Vattenrike Ecomuseum and Biosphere Reserve Case study 3 Key findings The Kristianstads Vattenrike Biosphere Reserve appears to have substantial support and influence, it has generated modest tangible benefits, and is seen as contributing to a development philosophy and municipal profile or image which could deliver substantial social and economic benefits in the longer term. The Vattenrike Ecomuseum and its associated “sustainable use” philosophy became established over a period of more than 16 years prior to the BR designation, and was effectively transformed into a BR in 2005. It is therefore difficult to separate out the actual added value attributable to the BR designation itself. However, there was a strong and consistent view amongst those with whom I talked that the BR designation has provided international “quality assurance” for the natural values and the way they are being managed, and also strengthened a sense of pride in their approach to these assets. According to some of the key players in planning and development in the Municipality, the BR and its philosophy are key elements in the profile and image of Kristianstad, and fundamental to a dynamic and modern future economy. Many factors have contributed to this perception, which are discussed in more detail in the case, but three in particular stand out: • the groundwork of engagement done over more than 16 years prior to designation; • the effective networking and practical issues resolution by the leading players; and • the intimate and evident historic and continuing relationship between town and wetlands.
