1 The archaeology of Sulawesi: An update, 2016 Muhammad Irfan Mahmud Symposium overview The symposium on ‘The Archaeology of Sulawesi – An Update’ was held in Makassar between 31 January (registration day) and 3 February 2016 (field-trip day) as a joint initiative between the Balai Arkeologi Makassar (Balar Makassar, Makassar Archaeology Office) and The Australian National University (ANU). The main organisers were Sue O’Connor, David Bulbeck and Juliet Meyer from ANU, who are also the editors of this volume, and Budianto Hakim from Balar Makassar. Funding for the symposium was provided by an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant (DP110101357) to Sue O’Connor, Jack Fenner, Janelle Stevenson (ANU) and Ben Marwick (University of Washington) for the project ‘The archaeology of Sulawesi: A strategic island for understanding modern human colonization and interactions across our region’. This study used GEP with resources-based; WASP-IV software to minimize costs by considering the high hydropower potential of various regional-balanced; Sulawesi electricity regions. Regional-balanced and resources-based approaches were employed to determine the generation candidates. The resources-based approach considered all the hydropower resources in Sulawesi Island and prioritized installation of hydropower generating URL: https://doi.org/10.5278/ijsepm.3247 units close to resource locations, while the regional-balanced one considered the installation of flexible generating units close to load centers. The results showed that the resources-based approach could achieve up to 30% renewable energy in the energy mix, with total costs for the regional-balanced one being $ 9.83 billion for low demand and $ 13.57 billion for high demand; however, the resources-based scenario costs would be $ 9.54 billion for low demand and $ 13.38 billion for high demand. -

8 Holocene site occupancy in Sulawesi David Bulbeck Abstract This contribution presents an analysis of the number of Sulawesi sites (summed probability) occupied per 500-year interval between 10,000 and 0 BP, based on radiometric dates. The number of occupied sites was low between 10,000 and 4500 BP, ranging between 1 to 4 per half-millennium. There were subsequent increases in the number of occupied sites per half- millennium to 5–8 between 4500 and 2000 BP, 9–13 between 2000 and 1000 BP, and over 30 between 1000 and 0 BP. These figures would be consistent with a scenario of substantial population increases at around 4500, 2000 and 1000 BP. However, care should be exercised in making a literal interpretation of these figures. For instance, with respect to the 4500–2500 BP period, the number of closed sites was highest during 4500–3500 BP and the number of open- air sites highest during 3500–2000 BP. Also, the large number of documented sites dating to the last millennium BP reflects a particular focus of Sulawesi archaeological research on sites related ethnohistorically to the Bugis and other major ethno-linguistic divisions in South Sulawesi. Peros et al. (2010) and Williams (2012) outline the history and growing popularity of this approach, and its respective application to North America and Australia—two continents for which there are large numbers of radiocarbon dates from archaeological sites. -

Here are the details: Indonesia: Connecting to Sulawesi and Beyond The new Khiri Travel office in Makassar, Sulawesi opened in December. 11 THE SUSTAINABILITY OF ECOTOURISM IN INDONESIA Fact and fiction Janet Cochrane Traditional forms of tourism, particularly mass tourism to resorts and beaches, have well-documented detrimental effects on the regions and countries visited, ranging from marine pollution and coastal erosion to cultural dislocation of host populations. In the last decade sustainable tourism and ecotourism have been vaunted as answers to the problems of mass tourism and as a contribution to conservation of the world’s wild places and the welfare of indigenous peoples. This chapter will examine the theory and practice of ecotourism and sustainable tourism with particular reference to national parks and other protected areas in Indonesia. TOURISM IN NATIONAL PARKS In nineteenth century America, John Muir and other conservationists believed in ‘the revitalising powers of wild landscapes in an increasingly complex society’ (Pigram, 1983, p. 151), and thought that, if nature’s resources could be protected and opened up to serve the recreational needs of the general population, the public would in turn become motivated to support the parks. Similar arguments are used to support the establishment of protected areas in developing countries nowadays. ‘Some [Indonesian] planners believe that, over the long term, domestic tourism may be the most effective means of developing broad-based social awareness and support for nature conservation and parks’ (Robinson and Sumardja, 1990, pp. 210–11). The first North American parks were remote and difficult to reach, as many Indonesian parks are today, which meant they received few visitors. It was only much later, in the second half of the twentieth century, that carrying capacity for both the environment and the visitors themselves began to be exceeded. -

The Correlation Between Da’a Ethnic in the Hinterlands of Gawalise Mountains, Central Sulawesi, with the Australomelanesid Population in Sulawesi. Evidences of inhabitation by early modern human that characterized by Australomelanesid race have been found in most region of Indonesia. They lived in this archipelago, including Sulawesi, approximately 60.000- 40.000 years ago. Caves occupation in the Maros-Pangkep and open sites of settlement landscape at Passo, Minahasa, have showed us the evidence of their existence in South and North Sulawesi at that time. But, in Central Sulawesi their traces were not present. This fact is what makes us interested in conducting this study. The goal of this study is to find the traces of early modern human populations with Australomelanesid race character in Central Sulawesi. The method for this study is a survey method using ethnoarchaeology. In this research we concluded that one of the ethnic that inhabit this region, the Da’a, has the character of Australomelanesid race. It is possible that they are descendants of the early modern human populations. But in the present time, they are using the Austronesian culture and language, which introduced to Sulawesi when their speakers migrated to this island nearly 4000 years ago. The discovery of this Da’a ethnic tribe not only has produced a new hipothesis, but also strengthen the former hipothesis about the existence of modern human at Sulawesi.
