  • Annie Lennox: Diva/Medusa
Annie Lennox: Diva/Medusa spectrumculture.com/2018/03/12/annie-lennox-diva-medusa Daniel Bromfield March 12, 2018 At its best, Annie Lennox’s music is as deep, comforting and mysterious as that of Sade, the Blue Nile, or any of the other great sophisticated pop acts from the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. But in Lennox’s voice there’s a certain acidity that grounds us firmly in reality rather than suave fantasy. Ugly, real emotions are never far beneath the illusion, and on her cover of “Take Me to the River” or as she whispers into the mic on “Why,” she’s ready to kill. Even on something as atmospheric as “Downtown Lights,” she never allows herself to disappear into the mix. Helen Folasade Adu never loses her cool, but Lennox ends her best-known solo song, a jaw-dropping cover of obscure British band The Lover Speaks’ “No More I Love You’s,” by bursting into tears. Lennox was a relative veteran by the time she released her solo debut Diva at 37. She’d come to fame in the Eurythmics but had been kicking around since the ‘70s, as part of Scottish band the Tourists. After her personal and professional relationship with guitarist Dave Stewart ended, Lennox wrote most of Diva herself and settled on a new sound: less lean and more immersive than that project’s rock-band hijinks, with Lennox’s voice in the center of an environment rather than at the front of a machine. Diva opens with a wash of pads so lush and pillowy our heads sink right back into it.

  • The AGA Song Book up to Date
3rd Edition Songs, Poems, Stories and More! Edited by Bob Felice Published by The American Go Association P.O. Box 397, Old Chelsea Station New York, N.Y., 10113-0397 Copyright 1998, 2002, 2006 in the U.S.A. by the American Go Association, except where noted. Cover illustration by Jim Rodgers. No part of this book may be used or reproduced in any form or by any means, or stored in a database or retrieval system, without prior written permission of the copyright holder, except for brief quotations used as part of a critical review. Introductions Introduction to the 1st Edition When I attended my first Go Congress three years ago I was astounded by the sheer number of silly Go songs everyone knew. At the next Congress, I wondered if all these musical treasures had ever been printed. Some research revealed that the late Bob High had put together three collections of Go songs, but the last of these appeared in 1990. Very few people had these song books, and some, like me, weren’t even aware that they existed. While new songs had been printed in the American Go Journal, there was clearly a need for a new collection of Go songs. Last year I decided to do whatever I could to bring the AGA Song Book up to date. I wanted to collect as many of the old songs as I could find, as well as the new songs that had been written since Bob High’s last song book. You are holding in your hands the book I was looking for two years ago.

  • God Appointed Joshua to Succeed Moses As Commander Over His People
JULY 1 JOSHUA 1:1 WHO IS JOSHUA? WHO IS A CHRISTIAN? Joshua is a well-known figure in the history of Israel. The story of how he conquered the Promised Land is recorded in the Book of Joshua in the Old Testament. The Promised Land is Canaan, a land of “milk and honey”, which means it was a land of plenty of food. God appointed Joshua to succeed Moses as commander over His people. His mission was to lead the people of Israel to battle against the Canaanites. In the many battles fought, God led and guided them to victory. The power of the God of Israel sent fear throughout Canaan. They had victory after victory. As long as they obeyed God, He guaranteed them victory. These battles took years but God was with them all the way. God was faithful in His promise of the land for the nation of Israel to settle in. Joshua means “Yahweh saves” or “Yahweh is salvation”. Yahweh refers to “The LORD.” Also, in the Greek language Joshua means “Jesus.” As a young servant, Joshua was Moses’ right-hand man. Joshua and Caleb were two out of the twelve spies, sent to check out Canaan forty years ago. Unlike the other ten spies, both of them believed God and reported faithfully what they saw. They reported that it was safe for the people to enter the Promised Land. But the people doubted God’s Word, and ended up travelling in circles in the wilderness for forty long years. Why forty years? For each day the spies took to survey the land, a year was to be spent in the wilderness.

  • Caste & Untouchability
Paggi fr. Luigi s.x. * * * * * * * * Caste & untouchability Pro Manuscripto Title: Caste & untouchability. A study-research paper in the Indian Subcontinent Authored by: Paggi fr. Luigi sx Edited by: Jo Ellen Fuller- 2002 Photographs by: Angelo fr. Costalonga sx Printed by: “Museo d’Arte Cinese ed Etnografico di Parma” - 2005 © 2005 Museo d’Arte Cinese ed Etnografico © Paggi fr. Luigi sx A few years ago, my confreres (Xaverian Missionaries working in Bangladesh) requested that I conduct a four-day course on caste and untouchability. Probably, I benefited as much from teaching the course as my student-confreres did since the process helped me crystallize my ideas about Hinduism and the ramifications of certain aspects of this religion upon the cultures of the subcontinent. From time to time, I am invited to different places to deliver lectures on these two topics. I usually accept these invitations because I am convinced that those who would like to do something to change the miserable lot of so many poor people living in the Indian Subcontinent must be knowledgeable about the caste system and untouchability. People need to be aware of the negative effect and the impact of these two social evils regarding the abject misery and poverty of those who are at the bot- tom of the greater society. It seems that people living in the Indian Subcontinent , no matter which reli- gion they belong to, are still affected (consciously or unconsciously) by these as- pects of Hinduism that have seeped into other religions as well. In order to prepare myself for the task of lecturing (on caste and untoucha- bility), I read and studied many books, magazines and articles on these two evil institutions of Hinduism, which have affected the social life of most of the people living in the Indian Subcontinent.

  • Postmodern Approaches to Recent Hindi Literature
Sudhīś Pacaurī and Pāṇḍey Śaśibhūṣaṇ ‘Śītāṃśu’: Postmodern Approaches to Recent Hindi Literature Veronica Ghirardi Università degli Studi di Torino [email protected] Abstract Postmodernism is a highly controversial phenomenon that animated the debates of Western scholars du- ring the closing decades of the Twentieth century. But has this term any meaning in the Indian context? This paper aims to introduce the notion of postmodernism in Hindi literary critique and more specifically the con- tributions of two scholars, Sudhīś Pacaurī and Pāṇḍey Śaśibhūṣaṇ ‘Śītāṃśu’, as the possible bases for textual analysis and further theoretical investigations. Keywords: Hindi Literature, Postmodernism, Literary Criticism, Sudhīś Pacaurī, Pāṇḍey Śaśibhūṣaṇ ‘Śī- tāṃśu’ —————————————— This paper aims to discuss the concept of postmodernism in the field of Hindi literature, through the per- spectives offered by two Indian scholars, Sudhīś Pacaurī and Pāṇḍey Śaśibhūṣaṇ ‘Śītāṃśu’. This is an almost unexplored research field and may represent a thought-provoking challenge. Postmodernism has been debat- ed in connection with multiple literary traditions — from Europe to Latin America, from the USA to Japan— but really few pages have been written on Indian literatures1. Undoubtedly a first issue has to be related to the origins of this cultural phenomenon, that are indissolubly connected with the Western world: can post- modernism be a suitable term for the Indian context? Or should it be considered a mere imported fashion? With the first section of this paper, after a general introduction to postmodernism, I attempt to answer this question, by discussing some possible acceptations of modernity and postmodernity in India. In sections 2 and 3, shifting from sociology towards literature (and particularly towards Hindi literature), I concentrate on Pacaurī’s and Śītāṃśu’s contributions, focusing on their analysis of some recent Hindi works.
