The first section provides background information about the German migrations to Canada and the German heritage. The module's general objectives are described next. The remaining Sections deal with German settlements in Manitoba, the bond between those who are able to understand and speak the German language, the role of religion and its importance in the lives of German-speaking Canadians, the value of family ties to German-speaking Canadians, customs common to German Canadians, and the relationship between the German-Canadian family and the neighborhood/community. -

1.4.3 We are all Canadians, no matter which origin Immediately after the beginning of the War in September 1914 some German-Canadians felt that Canada should not be involved in Britain’s war and that German-Canadians’ taxes should not go to the war effort. Count Alfred von Hammerstein, who had founded the Alberta Herold and then made his name in the early 1900s exploring Alberta’s North for oil in what would be called the oil sands, came onto the political scene in February 1915 with the Canada First Movement, an attempt to remove all foreign influences from politics which might endanger the good relationships among the various ethnic groups in Canada, among them Canadians of German, Austrian, French, English or American nationality, and to stay out of the War.1 The principles of the Canada First Movement included: equality of all citizens, no matter whether they were of British origin or not; election of representatives who represented the Germans’ traditional ideals of honesty, integrity and hard work in government; employment of naturalized citizens in high and low positions in government. Canada should not be forgotten over the war in Europe; the government should create work; Canada should be able, after the war’s end, to make its own decisions on peace or war. The Movement promoted a single Canadian identity: there should no longer be French-Canadians, English-Canadians, German-Canadians or foreigners, but only “Canadian citizens.”2 Von Hammerstein said that he was willing to run for office in the next Dominion election to lend a voice to the Germans in the House of Commons if his offer found a sufficiently large echo among the Germans in the province. -

Impact of Acculturation On Socialization Beliefs and Behavioral Occurences Among Indo-Canadian Immigrants ZEYNEP AYCAN * and RABINDRA N. KANUNGO ** INTRODUCTION The multicultural character of the Canada has emerged as a result of the society hosting immigrants belonging to various ethno-cultural groups. When the immigrants enter Canada, they bring with them a cultural baggage that contains a unique set of values, attitudes, socialization beliefs and behavioral norms required within the country of origin. However, as they settle in Canada, their constant interaction with the host society gradually brings about changes in these values, attitudes, beliefs, and behavioral norms. This process of transformation is known as the process of accultiuation (Redfield, Linton, &°Herskovits, 1938). Harmonious growth and maintenance of the Canadian society depends on the development of appropriate acculturation attitudes, and related socialization beliefs and practices of the various ethno-cultural immigrant groups. This study ex£imines the experience of Indo-Canadian parents and their children by identifying their acculturation attitudes, and the ways in which such attitudes are related to socialization beliefs and behaviour occurrences. The Acculturation Framework The model of acculturation attitudes proposed by Berry (1984) raises two critical questions: (a) whether or not an acculturating individual values maintaining his/her own cultural identity and characteristics, and (b) whether or not maintaining relationships with the larger society is considered to be of value to an acculturating individual (Berry, Poortinga, Segall,&Dasen, 1992). Depending on the answers to these questions, four possible altemative attitudes can be identified (Figure 1). First, the attitude of "assimilation," occurs when an acculturating individual does not wish to maintain his/her ethnic identity, but seeks relations with the larger society. -

This article is intended to explore the history of this discipline in the past 40+ years, fo- cusing on the growing awareness of Canada and its culture in Hungarian academic and intellectual life. As early as the mid-1980s, universities in Hungary offered various cours- es in Canadian Studies, which were followed by a large number of publications, con- ferences, and the institutionalization of the field. The article gives a survey of Canadian Studies in Hungary in the international context, showing the ways in which interaction with colleagues in Europe and beyond, and with institutions, such as the Central Euro- pean Association for Canadian Studies, has promoted the work of Hungarian researchers. The article also discusses the fields of interest and individual achievements of Hungarian scholars, as well as the challenges Canadian Studies has faced. Key words: Canadian Studies; Hungary; university; scholarship; research; history The study of Canada by Hungarians is usually considered a recent development compared to academic research on the history and culture of other nations. Howev- er, evidence shows that, in a sense, the history of contacts between the two countries goes back several centuries. -

STAFF REPORT April 19, 2002 To: Administration Committee From: Chief Administrative Officer Subject: 2002 Access and Equity Grant Program - Allocations Purpose: This report recommends the allocations of the 2002 Access and Equity Grant Program. Financial Implications and Impact Statement: Funding for grants recommended in this report is available within the Consolidated Grants Budget, which provides an allocation of $473.8 thousand for the 2002 Access and Equity Grant Program. Recommendations: It is recommended that: (1) grants totalling $468.8 thousand be approved as outlined in Appendix 1– 2002 Access and Equity Grant Program Allocations; (2) $5.0 thousand be held in reserve for appeals subject to the submission of a report recommending the allocation of this reserve; (3) the appropriate City of Toronto officials be authorized to take the necessary action to give effect thereto. 2 Council Reference In March 2002, City Council approved the 2002 Operating Budget, which provided an allocation of $473.8 thousand within the Consolidated Grants Budget for the Access and Equity Grant Program. The Access and Equity Grant Program operates under the following policies and procedures approved by Council: (a) “legislative Process for Grants Policy and Administration”, adopted by Council in April 1999; (b) the "City of Toronto Grants Policy" approved by Council in December 1998; (c) the Action Plan and Recommendations of the Task Force on Community Access and Equity adopted by City Council in December, 1999. Background: The Access and Equity Grant Program was established in 1980 as a municipal response to support community efforts to respond to direct and systemic racism. The objectives of the Access and Equity Grant Program set by Council were: ● to strengthen a positive race relations climate in the City of Toronto; and, ● to promote respect and value for Toronto’s multicultural and multiracial character.
