Keith Sciberras, Baroque Painting in Malta, Midsea Publications, ISBN-10: 99932724932009, ISBN-13: 978-9993272496, 2009 This marvellous and huge tome provides a detailed survey of the ‘Baroque period’ in Malta. This period was marked by the realism and naturalism of Caravaggist painting, the ‘noble classicism’ of the Bolognese school, and the exuberance of the high and late Baroque periods. The period is the richest in Malta’s art history as far as ‘old paintings’ are concerned. The author, Keith Sciberras, a History of Art academic at the University of Malta with a growing international reputation for his work in the area (particularly his work on Melchiorr Cafa and Caravaggio) states that he has been researching the period for the past fifteen years. This period is represented on the island by fine works of art. The painters in question include quite a number who stamped their mark on the history of western European art. Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio is undoubtedly the towering figure here. Then we come across works by Guido Reni, Jusepe de Ribera (the Valenciano, known as ‘Lo Spagnoletto’, from the Borgias’ city of Xativa), Luca Giordano (‘Luca fa presto’), Giovanni Battista (Battistello) Caracciolo, Massimo Stanzione, Mattia Preti (il Cavalier Calabrese), the Dutch caravaggist Mathias Stom (or Stomer), Pietro Novelli (il Monrealese) and Andrea Vaccaro. There are also lesser known figures on the international stage such as Mario Minniti (Caravaggio’s personal friend from Syracuse), the Florentine Filippo Paladini (he came here as a result of his having been sentenced to the galleys), Matteo Perez d'Aleccio, Giuseppe Arena and Stefano and Alessio Erardi. -

Pietro NOVELLI (Monreale 1603 - Palermo 1647) St. Francis Appearing to a Pope and King Pen and brown ink and brown wash, over traces of an underdrawing in black chalk. Inscribed fori(?) no. 42- on the verso. 316 x 231 mm. (12 1/2 x 9 1/8 in.) Drawn in the artist’s very distinctive pen manner, this drawing is a study, with several significant differences, for Monrealese’s painting of Saint Louis of France Receiving the Franciscan Girdle from Saint Francis, painted between 1635 and 1637, in the church of Santa Maria di Monte Oliveto (better known as the Badia Nuova) in Palermo. The altarpiece, which has undergone some repainting and has additions on three sides, differs from the drawing in several respects, particularly in the disposition of the figures. As such the present sheet must represent an early stage in the preparatory process. A variant or copy of this drawing is in the collection of the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia in Palermo. Monrealese had painted the same subject a few years earlier for another Franciscan church, San Francesco d’Assisi in Palermo. The fresco, destroyed in the Palermo earthquake of March 1823, is recorded in an engraving published two years earlier, in 1821. Some elements of the present sheet excluded from the Badia Nuova altarpiece, such as the soldier at the right, may be found in the composition of the lost fresco, which was, however, horizontal in format. In the autograph works are included all paintings which on documentary or stylistic evidence appear to be by, or partly by, the hand of Caravaggio. The attributed works include all paintings that have been associated with Caravaggio’s name in critical writings but which, in the opinion of the present writer, cannot be fully accepted as his, and those of uncertain attribution which he has not been able to examine personally. Some works listed here as copies are regarded as autograph by other authorities. Lost works, whose catalogue numbers are preceded by “L,” are paintings whose current whereabouts are unknown which are ascribed to Caravaggio in seventeenth-century documents, inventories, and in other sources. The catalogue of lost works describes a wide variety of material, including paintings considered copies of lost originals. Entries for untraced paintings include the city where they were identified in either a seventeenth-century source or inventory (“Inv.”). Most of the inventories have been published in the Getty Provenance Index, Los Angeles. Although successful during his lifetime, Vaccaro currently suffers a reputation that is, at best, second rate. Due to the hundreds of paintings attributed to Vaccaro of dubious quality, modern art historians characterize his art as “eclectic” and “academic.” The sole monograph on Vaccaro, Maria Commodo Izzo’s Andrea Vacccaro pittore (1604-1670) published in 1951, is also sorely out of date. This study provides a new and more accurate portrayal of the artist. Rather than the customary all-inclusive approach, this study is based on the solid foundation of all known documents about the artist’s life and art, which are gathered and analyzed in one place for the first time. -

I can now, but only because I visited there in mid-July. Upon arrival and during a short walk up hill to its main square “Hora e Arbëreshëvet” looks like many other small, sleepy towns in Sicily: cobblestone streets, a prominent First World War memorial, shuttered houses abandoned by migrants who long ago left for North and South America or more recently for Northern Italy and Northern Europe, numerous churches, and old men wearing “coppolas” sitting on straw-seated chairs in the shade with no women in sight. Yes, believe or not “Hora e Arbëreshëvet”, in spite of its unpronounceable name is in Sicily, on a plateau at 2,600 feet above sea level surrounded by mountains some 15 miles due south of Palermo. It’s a unique place because of its history, its post-World-War-II politics, its artisanry, and its gastronomy. So why this weird name? Andrea Vaccaro’s David and an Outline of Vaccaro’s Early Career* riccardo lattuada In 2014, at the suggestion of Ian Kennedy, Jeffrey Wilcox—then registrar of the Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri, Columbia—sent me images of a powerful David with the Head of Goliath (Fig. 1 and back cover).1 I realized immediately that the artist of the painting was Andrea Vaccaro, a seventeenth-century Neapolitan painter, who lived from 1604 to 1670. In January 2015, I presented a lecture, titled Framing Andrea Vaccaro’s David.2 In this article I repeat some of the arguments I offered in my lecture, and I expand my views on Andrea Vaccaro’s early career, a difficult issue despite the recent interest of various scholars, including myself.3 The Columbia David Columbia’s David is marked by a strong chiaroscuro, and the brown preparation is applied on a thick canvas. These devices are an early seventeenth-century (Seicento) Neapolitan technique. The position of the hero’s torso recalls Caravaggio’s David in the Vienna Kunsthistorisches Museum (Fig. 2), but in fact the depiction of the hips and legs seems to derive from such classical models as the Meleager in the Musei Vaticani in Rome (Fig. 3), or the Pompey in the Palazzo Spada, Rome (Fig. 4).4 This is not surprising when we consider that both Rome and Naples hosted an untold amount of ancient sculpture and that, even in the early seventeenth century, artists, including the so-called Cara- vaggesque painters, based their study of the human body on observing ancient sculptures. -
