Kapitel 2 Bauwissen im Italien der Frühen Neuzeit Hermann Schlimme, Dagmar Holste, Jens Niebaum Das Bauwesen der Frühen Neuzeit in Italien ist ein sehr großes sowie gut dokumentiertes und bearbeitetes Forschungsfeld. Der vorliegende Beitrag versucht, einen Überblick über das Bauwissen dieser Epoche zu geben. Die Texte wurden von drei Autoren erstellt.1 2.1 Die Frühe Neuzeit in Italien 2.1.1 Naturräumliche Bedingungen Italien ist mit Ausnahme der Po-Ebene und Teilen Apuliens eine bergige bis hochgebirgi- ge Halbinsel. So prägen sich die Regionen kulturell unterschiedlich aus. Die Topographie bringt zudem reiche Natursteinvorkommen mit sich, die sich von Region zu Region un- terscheiden und die regionale Architektur maßgeblich beeinflussen. Die Verwendung von Marmor ist für ganz Italien charakteristisch. In der Po-Ebene, wo es keinen Naturstein gibt, entwickelte sich dagegen eine auf Ziegelstein beruhende Baukultur. Holz ist in ganz Italien vorhanden. Eine für Italien typische Ansiedlungsform sind Bergdörfer und Bergstädte, die auf die geographischen Vorgaben reagieren und sich gleichzeitig gut verteidigen lassen. foto Municipalities (link 3) Modica Modica [ˈmɔːdika] (Sicilian: Muòrica, Greek: Μότουκα, Motouka, Latin: Mutyca or Motyca) is a city and comune of 54.456 inhabitants in the Province of Ragusa, Sicily, southern Italy. The city is situated in the Hyblaean Mountains. Modica has neolithic origins and it represents the historical capital of the area which today almost corresponds to the Province of Ragusa. Until the 19th century it was the capital of a County that exercised such a wide political, economical and cultural influence to be counted among the most powerful feuds of the Mezzogiorno. Rebuilt following the devastating earthquake of 1693, its architecture has been recognised as providing outstanding testimony to the exuberant genius and final flowering of Baroque art in Europe and, along with other towns in the Val di Noto, is part of UNESCO Heritage Sites in Italy. Saint George’s Church in Modica Historical chocolate’s art in Modica The Cioccolato di Modica ("Chocolate of Modica", also known as cioccolata modicana) is an Italian P.G.I. specialty chocolate,[1] typical of the municipality of Modica in Sicily, characterized by an ancient and original recipe using manual grinding (rather than conching) which gives the chocolate a peculiar grainy texture and aromatic flavor.[2][3][4] The specialty, inspired by the Aztec original recipe for Xocolatl, was introduced in the County of Modica by the Spaniards, during their domination in southern Italy.[5][6] Since 2009 a festival named "Chocobarocco" is held every year in the city. Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto (South-Eastern Sicily) The eight towns in south-eastern Sicily: Caltagirone, Militello Val di Catania, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo, Ragusa and Scicli, were all rebuilt after 1693 on or beside towns existing at the time of the earthquake which took place in that year. -

Il Libeccio Antico: Un Marmo Del Barocco Siciliano

UN MARMO DEL BAROCCO SICILIANO Giuseppe Antista* «Il colore del suo fondo è corallino, ma ornato delle più belle macchie verdi, bianche, gialle, violacee ed oscure. Questo marmo ... viene tenuto in maggior conto di ogni altro. Roma n’è a dovizia fornita per le tante colonne portatevi da Trapani, e per le tante cappelle impellicciate, e ben lavorate di questo marmo»1. Cosi veniva descritto nella Guida istruttiva del Di Marzo Ferro il libeccio antico, uno dei marmi siciliani più pregiati, cavato un tempo a Custonaci (Tp). Il libeccio estratto attualmente ha delle caratteristiche alquanto diverse da quello “antico”, largamente usato tra la fine del Cinquecento e la prima metà del Settecento in moltissime architetture siciliane, ma anche in prestigiosi edifici extraisolani; attraverso Fig. 1. Unmasking Noto: The Baroque of Reconciliation LUCA SCARFI Impersonal forces do not transform human settlements. Or at least they do so only on rare occa- sions, and these are natural disasters: fire, flood, earthquake, and pestilence. Otherwise, the modi- fication of settlement is a human act, however complex, accomplished for human motives, however obscure or ineffective. —Kevin Lynch On January 11, 1693, a violent earthquake hit the eastern coast of Sicily. The physical destructions of the region's urban centers precipitated the disintegration of the social, economic, and cultural structures they housed. The walled town of Noto was the most widely devastated.' A little over two centuries later, in 2002, UNESCO se- lected Noto along with seven other towns in the Val di Noto region for protection as "World Heritage Sites." As the UNESCO report specified, this "group of towns in south-eastern Sicily" met four criteria all of which were aesthetic in substance, and provided "outstanding testimony to the exuberant genius of late Baroque art and ar- chitecture."' The reasons underlying UNESCO's decision related in particular to the exceptional richness of late Baroque architectural detail found in Noto's ecclesiastical and secular buildings as well as to a unique urban con- figuration, which is inextricably linked to the architectural and natural surroundings. The process of selection was furthermore expedited in Noto's case because of the collapse of the dome and roof of the cathedral's central nave, which left the structure—a jewel of the Italian cultural patrimony— especially "endangered." The tragedy, which could and should have been avoided, was the result of technical, political, and organizational failures that occurred prior to UNESCO's selection, when the problems that led to the collapse were ignored and so took their own course. -

I percorsi più aggiornati della critica d’arte assegnano un ruolo di primo piano alla stampa periodica quale strumento di fondamentale importanza per lo studio delle vicende artistiche, in una pluralità di prospettive storiche1. Dopo molti decenni di letterale oblio, o di solo episodica “frequentazione” da parte degli studiosi, le riviste sono oggi assurte al rango di fonti di non minore utilità e importanza rispetto a quelle documentarie, monografiche e in generale ascendenti al più vasto campo della letteratura artistica, infatti la vitalità di giornali e riviste, fenomeno già importante nella seconda metà del Settecento, rappresentò un canale privilegiato per il dibattito intorno alle arti, che coinvolse i maggiori intellettuali siciliani, essendosi in essi focalizzato un forte interesse per la conoscenza del patrimonio culturale della loro isola. È infatti ormai definitivamente accertata la valenza di questo particolare “strumento” editoriale che in Sicilia – specialmente a partire dal XIX secolo – assume un ruolo di primo piano nella strutturazione e nella propagazione della cultura soprattutto borghese.
