KARVALICS LÁSZLÓ Információtörténelem Az önazonosság keresésétől az átfogó kutatási programokig A huszadik század végi történetírásról szólva Bernhard Bailyn már-már poétikus fordula- tokra ragadtatta magát. Véleménye szerint ennek „egyik legmélyebb tendenciája […] az a késztetés, hogy a kutatások határait kiszélesítsék, hogy a nagyobb összefüggésekbe beállít- va újramérlegeljenek jelentős eseményeket és tendenciákat, és hogy egy jóval tágasabb és általánosabb síkon magasabb fokú megértéshez jussanak el. A történeti kutatás minden – intellektuális, kulturális és politikai – szférájában kitágult a látókör. Feltárulnak a nagysza- bású hasonlóságok és párhuzamok…”1 Úgy vélem, mindez nemcsak általában jellemzi a történeti vizsgálódásokat, hanem tel- jes mértékben alkalmazható azokra az irányzatokra, iskolákra, amelyek magukat önálló ku- tatási területként, ágazatként (az angolszász szóhasználatban: sub-field) meghatározva nagy lépéseket tettek az intézményesülés irányába. Annál különösebb, hogy a több mint húsz éve nagy erőkkel szerveződő és Bailyn definícióját messzemenően kielégítő informá- ciótörténelem (information history) még mindig nem tudott „betörni” a történettudomá- nyi közbeszédbe, annak ellenére sem, hogy az „információs társadalom” narratíva megjele- nésének, illetve az annak előtörténete felé forduló érdeklődésnek természetszerű módon kellett volna elvezetnie az ismertséghez és a felértékelődéshez.2 Azokon kívül, akik magukat az információtörténeti irányzathoz sorolják, és többé-kevésbé ismerik egymást, ez a meg- közelítésmód nem „látható” a szakma magas szintű orgánumai és intézményei számára.3 1 Idézi: Kocka, Jürgen: A történelem és a társadalomtudományok ma. Az ELTE BTK-n debütált tanrendi kur- zusként a kilencvenes évek közepén az információtörténelem mint tantárgy (akkor Z. Karvalics László, később, már az ezredforduló után Novák Veronika vezetésével). A Műhelykurzus törekvése egy országos oktatói és kutatói hálózat kiépítésére („Információtörténeti Kabinetek”) eredményte- len maradt, de a kérdéssel foglalkozókat egy informális, mostanra több mint ötven főt tartalmazó levelezőlista azóta is összeköti. 2010-ben alakult meg a Magyar Történeti Társulat Információtör- téneti Szakosztálya, és az intézményesedés fontos állomása a Szegedi Információtörténeti Műhely megszületése (2011. október). Az első információtörténeti tárgyú publikációt (Z. Karvalics László: Úton a történeti informatika felé. Jel-Kép, 1991. 1-2. sz. 131–139.) azóta mintegy három tucatnyi információtörténeti tárgyú és féltucat, magával az információtörténelemmel mint tárggyal foglal- kozó közlemény követte. Fontos állomásnak tekinthető a Világtörténet című folyóirat 1996-os, tel- jes egészében információtörténeti tematikus száma (ősz–tél). A „nagykorúvá váláshoz” pedig a Gondolat Kiadói Műhely által elindított két könyvsorozat, a mostanra öt kötetig jutó „Információ- történelem” (indulás: 2004.) és a Hajnal István írásoktatás-történeti Opus Magnumának magyar fordításával elindult „Az információtörténelem klasszikusai” járultak hozzá (2008). 3 Ezért időszerű az a javaslat, hogy a Pekingben rendezendő következő történész világkongresszus- nak az információtörténelem legyen az egyik kiemelt témája. AETAS 27. évf. 2012. 4. szám 5 Tanulmányok Z. KARVALICS LÁSZLÓ Nagyon hasonlóképpen történt mindez egykor az antropológia és a történettudomány találkozásakor. Negyedszázaddal ezelőtt David Gaunt négy szakaszt különített el a be- és elfogás stációiként.4Az első időszak az antagonizmus szakasza volt, amelyet csekély számú átjárás, de annál jelentősebb szembenállás jellemzett. A második fázis hozta el az elméleti érdeklődés felébredését, különböző „mintakutatások” formájában. Ezt követte előbb a jó- indulat, majd negyedikként az integráció korszaka. Ma az antropológiai megközelítés- és szemléletmód érvényessége és nélkülözhetetlensége nem kérdés: az integráció teljes körű és meggyőző. Ha Gaunt tipológiáját alkalmazzuk az információtörténelemre, akkor pillanatnyilag nagyjából az első és a második szakasz között vagyunk. Minden rész-eredmény ellenére sem sikerült ugyanis még túllépni az antagonizmus periódusán. Mindennél többet mond, hogy a legfrissebb programtanulmányban, James Cortada egyszerre provokatív és szinteti- kus vitairatában5 a szerzőnek még meg kell védenie Alistair Blacket és Toni Wellert, a brit információtörténeti iskola vezető képviselői azzal az erősen akceptálható érvvel, hogy mie- lőtt támadásba lendülne bárki, előtte adjon időt, hogy a paradigma „kiforrja” magát.6 A második fázishoz

From 1984 to 1992, he worked at Brown University in Providence (Rhode Island, U.S.) as an Assistant and then Associate Professor of Medical Sciences. In 1991, he became the chairman of the Section of Artificial Organs, Biomaterials and Cellular Technology of the Division of Biology and Medicine of Brown University. In the fall of 1992, he returned to Switzerland as a Professor and Director of the Surgical Research Division and Gene Therapy Center at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV) in Lausanne. In 1999, Patrick Aebischer was appointed President of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) by the Swiss Federal Council. He took office on 17 March, 2000. He is a member of numerous professional societies, both in Europe and America. He is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and of the Swiss Academy of Medicine. Patrick Aebischer is also the founder of three biotechnology companies. His current research focuses on the development of cell and gene transfer approaches for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Forster (1871-1970), autor y crítico inglés del grupo de Bloomsbury, más conocido por su novela A Passage to India. El cuento que da nombre a ese libro, The Life to Come and Other Stories, relata el ímpetu misionero de un joven que confunde y permite la confusión de los evangelizados en la interpretación del amor. De ser así, su alusión en el título de esta ponencia podría interpretarse como relativa a la noción de confundir conceptos o, quizás, a la coincidencia histórica de que la vida del autor se prolongó desde el principio de la segunda revolución industrial hasta los albores de la revolución de la sociedad de la información, período que en la universidad española comprende, grosso modo, desde la adopción completa del modelo napoleónico1 hasta la aprobación de la Ley de Reforma Universitaria (LRU)2, que acabaría con la Ley Moyano3.
