Vegetation Clearance Constraints Maps_________________________________________________ 10 293899/BNI/MNS/1/A October 2011 Portishead Railway Project Executive Summary Overview Mott MacDonald Ltd has been commissioned by North Somerset Council to conduct Phase 2 Protected Species surveys along the disused railway track from Portishead (National Grid Reference ST 471, 765) to Pill, Bristol (National Grid Reference ST 520, 763). The proposed works are to clear vegetation so that there is a 4 m strip parallel with the disused railway line (i.e. 4 m including the railway line itself) so that the track, its sleepers and ballast are able to be viewed and assessed. The habitat consists mainly of scrub, woodland and grassland. The phase 2 surveys included reptile, invertebrate, badger, water vole, bat and great crested newt. The results and conclusions of the surveys are detailed in the following table. Background 1.1 Proposed Development Mott MacDonald Ltd has been commissioned by North Somerset Council to conduct Phase 2 Protected Species surveys for the Portishead Railway Project. The site begins in Portishead (National Grid Reference ST 471, 765) and ends in Pill, Bristol (National Grid Reference ST 520, 763). The disused railway track was closed in the 1960’s, and up until this time was used to transport passengers from Portishead to Bristol Temple Meads. It runs through the areas of Portishead, Sheepway and Portbury and connects to an active freight line in Pill. The proposed works are to clear vegetation up to 4 m from the disused railway line so that the track, its sleepers and ballasts are able to be viewed and assessed. The habitat consists mainly of scrub, woodland and grassland. 1.1.1 Scope of the Report A Phase 1 Habitat survey was conducted in March 2011 by Halcrow. Many conditions in the urban habitats are modified compared to those in the rural ones, so the organisms present reactions to these changes. To determine to what extent the habitat type influences insects, we tested the differences in the pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) leaf-mining insect community between urban and rural habitats in Serbia. Lower species richness, abundance, and diversity were determined on trees in the urban environment. Due to the differences in the habitat types, many of the species disappeared, while most of the remaining species declined. The seasonal dynamics of species richness, abundance, and diversity differed between the habitat types. Both rural and urban populations started with low values in May. Subsequently, rural populations gained higher species richness, abundance, and diversity.

    Bugs and Beasties of the Western Rhodopes (a photoguide to some lesser-known species) by Chris Gibson and Judith Poyser [email protected] Yagodina At Honeyguide, we aim to help you experience the full range of wildlife in the places we visit. Generally we start with birds, flowers and butterflies, but we don’t ignore 'other invertebrates'. In the western Rhodopes they are just so abundant and diverse that they are one of the abiding features of the area. While simply experiencing this diversity is sufficient for some, as naturalists many of us want to know more, and in particular to be able to give names to what we see. Therein lies the problem: especially in eastern Europe, there are few books covering the invertebrates in any comprehensive way. Hence this photoguide – while in no way can this be considered an ‘eastern Chinery’, it at least provides a taster of the rich invertebrate fauna you may encounter, based on a couple of Honeyguide holidays we have led in the western Rhodopes during June. We stayed most of the time in a tight area around Yagodina, and almost anything we saw could reasonably be expected to be seen almost anywhere around there in the right habitat. Most of the photos were taken in 2014, with a few additional ones from 2012. While these creatures have found their way into the lists of the holiday reports, relatively few have been accompanied by photos. We have attempted to name the species depicted, using the available books and the vast resources of the internet, but in many cases it has not been possible to be definitive and the identifications should be treated as a ‘best fit’.

És el resultat de més de 12 anys de treballs que han duit a terme els científics del grup s‘Albufera-IBG i molts d‘altres experts i aficionats que han aportat l’esforç i els coneixe- ments per completar aquesta visió global de la biodiversitat de s‘Albufera de Mallorca. Un cos de coneixements que s’ha anat formant pas a pas, com és característic de tot procés cien- tífic. La Conselleria de Medi Ambient és ben conscient que la conservació del patrimoni natural no es pot fer sense els estudis que ens han de permetre conèixer quins són els recursos sota la nostra responsabilitat i quin valor tenen. De cada vegada el gran públic coneix més quines són les espècies amenaçades i les accions per conservar-les troben ressò en els mitjans de comunicació i en la sensibilitat de la socie- tat en general. Però cal demanar-se: estam fent tot allò que és necessari per garantir la con- servació del patrimoni natural per a les generacions pròximes? Són suficients els coneixe- ments actuals d’aquest patrimoni? Quines espècies o quines poblacions són les més valuo- ses? Aquest llibre ajudarà a respondre algunes d‘aquestes preguntes. És un compromís entre la visió del científic, que sempre desitja aprofundir en l’estudi, i els gestors, que demanen amb urgència unes eines adequades per planificar les accions de conservació i avaluar-les.
