Twenty species are recorded from Britain for the first time, among them seven species that are newly described (Tropistes scoticus sp. nov., Orthizema francescae sp. nov., Stibeutes blandi sp. nov., Theroscopus horsfieldi sp. nov., Theroscopus mariae sp. nov., Theroscopus naninae sp. nov. and Phygadeuon palus sp. nov.). Keys are provided for the females of western Palaearctic species of Tropistes, and macropterous females of European Orthizema and (separately) Theroscopus species. Boleslawia Sawoniewicz is newly synonymised under Tropistes Gravenhorst, and Theroscopus rotundator Aubert under T. ochrogaster (Thomson). Tropistes burakowskii (Sawoniewicz) and Phygadeuon melanopygus (Gravenhorst) are new combinations. • Lepidoptera of Albany Hill, Alameda Co., California
LEPIDOPTERA OF ALBANY HILL, ALAMEDA CO., CALIFORNIA Jerry A. Powell Essig Museum of Entomology University of California, Berkeley and Robert L. Langston Kensington, CA November 1999; edited 2009 The following list summarizes observations of Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) at Albany Hill, Alameda Co., California, during 1995-1999. Data originate from about 75 daytime and crepuscular visits of 0.5 to 3.5 hrs, in all months of the year. All of the butterfly species and some of the moths were recorded by RLL, most of the moth species and their larval host plants by JAP. A total of 145 species is recorded (30 butterflies, 115 moths), a modest number considering the extent and diversity of the flora. However, many of the potential larval host plants may be present in too small patches to support populations of larger moths or butterflies. Nonetheless, we were surprised that colonies of some of the species survive in a small area that has been surrounded by urban development for many decades, including some rare ones in the East Bay region, as annotated below. Moreover, the inventory is incomplete. A more comprehensive census would be accomplished by trapping moths attracted to ultraviolet lights. In a habitat of this size, however, such survey would attract an unknown proportion of species from surrounding areas. Larval collections are indicated by date-based JAP lot numbers (e.g. 95C37 = 1995, March, 37th collection). Larval foods of most of the other species are documented in other populations. Host plants are recorded at Albany Hill for 75 species (65% of the moths, 52% of the total); the rest were observed as adults only.

The lepidopteran fauna of the former military training area near Oleško (Czech Republic: Ústecký Region) was studied in the year 2008. This area is on sandy ground, the predominant habitats are dry Scots pine forests growing on sand. 700 species were recorded, many of them are markedly psammophilous. Some characteristic spe- cies are very abundant there, namely on open habitats Aroga velocella (Zeller, 1839), Teleiopsis diffinis (Haworth, 1828), Platytes alpinellus (Hübner, 1813), Pyrausta ostrinalis (Hübner, 1796), Paradrina selini (Boisduval, 1840), Agrotis vestigialis (Hufnagel, 1766), Eilema pygmaeolum (Doubleday, 1847), some other species were only recorded individually (Aristotelia brizella (Treitschke, 1833), Helcystogramma lineolellum (Zeller, 1839), Pediasia fasce- linella (Hübner, 1813), Lythria cruentaria (Hufnagel, 1767) and Hadena irregularis (Hufnagel, 1766)). ZOOSYSTEMATICA ROSSICA, 21(1): 169–172 25 JULY 2012 Paralypusa, a new genus of the family Lypusidae (Lepidoptera: Gelechioidea) from China Paralypusa – новый род семейства Lypusidae (Lepidoptera: Gelechioidea) из Китая A.L. LVOVSKY А.Л. ЛЬВОВСКИЙ A.L. Lvovsky, Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, 1 Universitetskaya Emb., St Petersburg 199034, Russia. E-mail: [email protected] A new eastern-palaearctic monotypic genus of the gelechioid moths, Paralypusa gen. nov., is established for the Chinese species Paralypusa chinensis (Lvovsky, 2010), comb. nov. This genus is considered closely related to Lypusa Zeller, 1852 on the base of several synapomor- phies. However Paralypusa also shares some features with the genera Pseudatemelia Rebel, 1910 and Amphisbatis Zeller, 1870. Its transitional state confirms the belonging of all the afore- mentioned genera to one family and synonymy of the Lypusidae Herrich-Schäffer, 1857 and Amphisbatidae Spuler, 1910 (Nieukerken et al., 2011). Lypusi- dae Herrich-Schäffer, 1857 and Amphisbatidae Spuler, 1910 (Nieukerken et al., 2011).

The mate rial contains four species, which are described as new species: Neurothaumasia tenuipennella, Neurothaumasia tunesiella, Infurcitinea corleyi and Ateliotum larseni. From Matratinea rufulicaput Szir aki & Sz ö c s, 1990 and Anomalotinea gardesanella (H a rtig , 1950) were described and illustrated the female genitalia for the first time, from Elatobia bugrai K ocak, 1981 were described and illustrated the male genitalia for the first time. The examination of the type series of Euplocamus anthracinalis amanalis O st h e ld e r , 1936 shows, that this taxon is a new synonym of Euplocamus delagrangei R ag o n o t, 1895. There was designated and selected the lectotype for Euplocamus anthracinalis amanalis O st h e l d e r , 1936. • Thuja (Arborvitae)
nysipm.cornell.edu 2019 Search for this title at the NYSIPM Publications collection: ecommons.cornell.edu/handle/1813/41246 Disease and Insect Resistant Ornamental Plants Mary Thurn, Elizabeth Lamb, and Brian Eshenaur New York State Integrated Pest Management Program, Cornell University Thuja Arborvitae Thuja is a genus of evergreens commonly known as arborvitae. Used extensively in ornamental plantings, there are numerous cultivars available for a range of size, form and foliage color. Many can be recognized by their distinctive scale-like foliage and flattened branchlets. Two popular species, T. occidentalis and T. plicata, are native to North America. Insect pests include leafminers, spider mites and bagworms. Leaf and tip blights may affect arbor- vitae in forest, landscape and nursery settings. INSECTS Arborvitae Leafminer, Argyresthia thuiella, is a native insect pest of Thuja spp. While there are several species of leafminers that attack arborvitae in the United States, A. thuiella is the most common. Its range includes New England and eastern Canada, south to the Mid-Atlantic and west to Missouri (5). Arborvitae is the only known host (6). Heavy feeding in fall and early spring causes yellow foliage that later turns brown. Premature leaf drop may follow. Plants can survive heavy defoliation, but their aesthetic appeal is greatly diminished. Re searchers at The Morton Arboretum report significant differences in relative susceptibility to feeding by arborvitae leafminer for several Thuja species and cultivars.
