Contrasting Patterns of Karyotype and Sex Chromosome Evolution in Lepidoptera
School of Doctoral Studies in Biological Sciences University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice Faculty of Science Contrasting patterns of karyotype and sex chromosome evolution in Lepidoptera Ph.D. Thesis Mgr. Jindra Šíchová Supervisor: Prof. RNDr. František Marec, CSc. Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Institute of Entomology České Budějovice 2016 This thesis should be cited as: Šíchová J (2016) Contrasting patterns of karyotype and sex chromosome evolution in Lepidoptera. Ph.D. Thesis. University of South Bohemia, Faculty of Science, School of Doctoral Studies in Biological Sciences, České Budějovice, Czech Republic, 91 pp. Annotation It is known that chromosomal rearrangements play an important role in speciation by limiting gene flow within and between species. Furthermore, this effect may be enhanced by involvement of sex chromosomes that are known to undergo fast evolution compared to autosomes and play a special role in speciation due to their engagement in postzygotic reproductive isolation. The work presented in this study uses various molecular- genetic and cytogenetic techniques to describe karyotype and sex chromosome evolution of two groups of Lepidoptera, namely selected representatives of the family Tortricidae and Leptidea wood white butterflies of the family Pieridae. The acquired knowledge points to unexpected evolutionary dynamics of lepidopteran karyotypes including the presence of derived neo-sex chromosome systems that originated as a result of chromosomal rearrangements. We discuss the significance of these findings for radiation and subsequent speciation of both lepidopteran groups. The lepidopteran fauna of the former military training area near Oleško (Czech Republic: Ústecký Region) was studied in the year 2008. This area is on sandy ground, the predominant habitats are dry Scots pine forests growing on sand. 700 species were recorded, many of them are markedly psammophilous. Some characteristic spe- cies are very abundant there, namely on open habitats Aroga velocella (Zeller, 1839), Teleiopsis diffinis (Haworth, 1828), Platytes alpinellus (Hübner, 1813), Pyrausta ostrinalis (Hübner, 1796), Paradrina selini (Boisduval, 1840), Agrotis vestigialis (Hufnagel, 1766), Eilema pygmaeolum (Doubleday, 1847), some other species were only recorded individually (Aristotelia brizella (Treitschke, 1833), Helcystogramma lineolellum (Zeller, 1839), Pediasia fasce- linella (Hübner, 1813), Lythria cruentaria (Hufnagel, 1767) and Hadena irregularis (Hufnagel, 1766)). Two other synonyms have been established: B. alpina Frey, 1870 = B. leucanthemella Constant, 1895, syn. n.; B. infans Staudinger, 1880 = B. centaureae Deschka, 1973, syn. n. The male genitalia of the species are figured. Lectotypes have been designated for 5 species. Zusammenfassung. Biodiversität Von Schmetterlingen (Lepidoptera) Im Gebiet Des Naturparks Schlern
Gredleriana Vol. 7 / 2007 pp. 233 - 306 Biodiversität von Schmetterlingen (Lepidoptera) im Gebiet des Naturparks Schlern Peter Huemer Abstract Biodiversity of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) of the Schlern nature park (South Tyrol, Italy) The species diversity of Lepidoptera within the Schlern nature park has been explored during the vegetation periods 2006 and 2007. Altogether 1030 species have been observed in 16 sites, covering about one third of the entire fauna from the province of South Tyrol. Fifteen additional species have been collected during the diversity day 2006 whereas further 113 species date back to historical explorations. The species inventory includes 20 new records for South Tyrol which are briefly reviewed. Among these speciesMicropterix osthelderi, Rhigognostis incarnatella and Cydia cognatana are the first proved records from Italy. Further two species from the surroundings of the Park include the first published records ofPhyllonorycter issikii and Gelechia sestertiella for Italy. Site specific characteristics of Lepidoptera coenosis are discussed in some detail. Historical aspects of lepidopterological exploration of the Schlern are briefly introduced. Keywords: Lepidoptera, faunistics, biodiversity, Schlern, South Tyrol, Italy 1. -

O’Connor2 1Department of Zoology and Animal Ecology, School of BEES, University College Cork, Distillery Fields, North Mall, Cork, Ireland. e-mail: <[email protected]> 2Emeritus Entomologist, National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin 2, Ireland. Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe. -

BUNCUKÇU A b s t r a c t : We have investigated Ichneumonidae fauna of Isparta province between 2001-2007 in Turkey. Totally, 46 species, 36 genera, 12 subfamilies were found; 4 species from Anomaloninae, 6 species from Banchinae, 3 species from Campoplaginae, 4 species from Cryptinae, 14 species from Ctenopelmatinae, 4 species from Pimplinae, 2 species from Ophioninae, 5 species from Typhoninae, 1 species from Cremastinae, Metopiinae, Collyriinae and Diplazontinae. 1 genera and six species, noted in the text by asterisk, are new records for Turkey. The synonyms, general and Turkish distribution and as well as known host of all species were given. K e y w o r d s : Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae, Fauna, Turkey. Introduction In Turkey, the past studies about Ichneumonidae were inadequate to make precise esti- mations about the existance of species. On the other hand, it is known that Turkey with its high diverse biota is expected to provide a very rich fauna of Ichneumonidae as well as other insects (ÖZBEK et al. 2003). Isparta is one of the most important refugias of Turkey, possessing different topographic conditions and various kind of climates (GRUEV 2002).
