He began his music career in the 1980s, building a reputation as a young rapper in his hometown of Brooklyn and collaborating with his mentor and fellow rapper Jazz-O. He later founded Roc-A-Fella Records with close friends Damon Dasha and Karim Biggs Burke and released his debut studio album Reasonable Doubt in June 1996. The album peaked at number 23 on the Billboard 200 in the United States and has since been recognized as a seminal work by the hip-hop genre. His singles included Dead Presidents, Ain't No and Can't Knock the Hustle, all of which reached the top ten on the BillboardHot Rap Songs chart. In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 (1997), in which J.C. collaborated with producers such as Sean Puff Daddy Combs and Teddy Riley, peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and received platinum certification from the American Recording Industry Association (RIAA). Volume 2. Hard Knock Life was released in September 1998 and was its first number one in the U.S. The album included itself hits Can I Get A... and Hard Knock Life, which both reached the top twenty of the Billboard Hot 100. [8] Vol. 2 was five times platinum by the RIAA and won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album in 1999. Two more chart-topping albums are Vol. 3... Life and Times of S. Carter and The Dynasty: Roc La Familia - followed in December 1999 and October 2000, respectively. The albums included hit singles such as Big Pimpin and I Just Want to Love U (Give It 2 Me) and included several guest performances signed to Roc-A-Fella Records. J.C.'s sixth studio album, The Blueprint, released in September 2001, became controversial, incorporating lyrics into other New York rappers. However, The Blueprint topped the Billboard 200 and released J.C.'s first single on the Billboard Hot 100, Izzo (H.O.V.A.).). The Blueprint is critically regarded as his best album. The Best of Both Worlds, a collaboration with American singer R. Kelly and The Blueprint 2: The Gift and The Curse were released the following year. The last album peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and included the top ten singles '03 Bonnie and Clyde' and 'Excuse Me Miss'. The black album, released in November 2003, was conceived by Jay-zee to be his last studio album and features his impending retirement as a recurring theme. The album performed well commercially and was later certified by the RIAA in 3x Multi-Platinum. After a period of rest, J-See became president of Def Jam Recordings in December 2004 and resumed his rap career two years later with the release of Kingdom Come, which peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 and was certified 2x Multi-Platinum RIAA. The American Gangster concept album followed in 2007 and continued its number one album series in the United States. With the release of The Blueprint 3 in September 2009, J-See overtook Elvis Presley as a solo artist with the most number one on the Billboard 200. The album included international hits Run This Town, Empire State of Mind and Young Forever. Watch the Throne, a joint album with American rapper Kanye West, followed in August 2011 and became J-See's eleventh album in the United States. His album Magna Carta Holy Grail was released in July 2013 with great commercial success, leading the Billboard 200 and spending the second-highest sales week in 2013 at the time of release. Dechsakda [email protected] Follow this and additional works at: http://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/gs_rp The er search paper was a study of how digital music distribution has affected the music industry by researching different views and aspects. I believe this topic was vital to research because it give us insight on were the music industry is headed in the future. Two main research questions proposed were; “How is digital music distribution affecting the music industry?” and “In what way does the piracy industry affect the digital music industry?” The methodology used for this research was performing case studies, researching prospective and retrospective data, and analyzing sales figures and graphs. Case studies were performed on one independent artist and two major artists whom changed the digital music industry in different ways. Another pair of case studies were performed on an independent label and a major label on how changes of the digital music industry effected their business model and how piracy effected those new business models as well. I analyzed sales figures and graphs of digital music sales and physical sales to show the differences in the formats. I researched prospective data on how consumers adjusted to the digital music advancements and how piracy industry has affected them. Last I concluded all the data found during this research to show that digital music distribution is growing and could possibly be the dominant format for obtaining music, and the battle with piracy will be an ongoing process that will be hard to end anytime soon.

    The Roots Report: America at Twin River Okee dokee folks… “Fifty years was not in the plan, but as long as you keep coming we’ll keep playing,” exclaimed Dewey Bunnell of the band America last Friday night at Twin River Casino’s Event Center. America was started as a trio in England by the sons of American Air Force servicemen stationed in England — Bunnell, Gerry Beckley and Dan Peek — in the late ’60s while they were still teenagers in high school. They quickly gained notoriety and soon were one of the bands that defined the sound of the early 1970s. Peek left the band in 1977 and passed away in 2011. America has been Bunnell and Beckley for most of their 50-year history. A few songs into their 90-minute set, Gerry Beckly said, “We’re glad to be back in Rhode Island…we’re sorry it’s been a while since we’ve been here!” The show kicked off with one of their more popular hits, “Tin Man.” That was quickly followed by their 1982 hit, “You Can Do Magic.” The vocals were handed over to drummer Ryland Steen for “Don’t Cross The River.” Multi instrumentalist Steve Fekete added six-string banjo to the mix as well. He also showcased his talents on piano and acoustic guitar, but really demonstrated his playing prowess on electric guitar. Most of the concert consisted of the entire contents of History: America’s Greatest Hits with the exception of “Muskrat Love.” They played other selections from their early albums such as “Riverside” and “Here,” in addition to later album cuts like “The Border” and their #1 hit in Italy, “Survival” about which they commented, “Not so big here!” They mentioned that “Every year we like to dredge up a song from an obscure album to play at a show” and that song this time around was “Greenhouse” from the Hourglass album.

It is not simply an American source of entertainment; it is a global cultural movement that provides a voice for youth worldwide who have not been able to express their “cultural world” through mainstream media. The emerging field of critical hip-hop pedagogy has produced little empirical research on how youth understand global citizenship. In this increasingly globalized world, this gap in the research is a serious lacuna. My research examines the intersection of hip-hop, global citizenship education and digital literacies in an effort to increase our understanding of how urban youth from two very different urban areas, (Detroit, Michigan, United States and Sydney, New South Wales, Australia) make sense of and construct identities as global citizens. This study is based on the view that engaging urban and marginalized youth with hip-hop and digital literacies is a way to help them develop the practices of critical global citizenship.
