Dechsakda [email protected] Follow this and additional works at: http://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/gs_rp The er search paper was a study of how digital music distribution has affected the music industry by researching different views and aspects. I believe this topic was vital to research because it give us insight on were the music industry is headed in the future. Two main research questions proposed were; “How is digital music distribution affecting the music industry?” and “In what way does the piracy industry affect the digital music industry?” The methodology used for this research was performing case studies, researching prospective and retrospective data, and analyzing sales figures and graphs. Case studies were performed on one independent artist and two major artists whom changed the digital music industry in different ways. Another pair of case studies were performed on an independent label and a major label on how changes of the digital music industry effected their business model and how piracy effected those new business models as well. I analyzed sales figures and graphs of digital music sales and physical sales to show the differences in the formats. I researched prospective data on how consumers adjusted to the digital music advancements and how piracy industry has affected them. Last I concluded all the data found during this research to show that digital music distribution is growing and could possibly be the dominant format for obtaining music, and the battle with piracy will be an ongoing process that will be hard to end anytime soon.

Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. It is not simply an American source of entertainment; it is a global cultural movement that provides a voice for youth worldwide who have not been able to express their “cultural world” through mainstream media. The emerging field of critical hip-hop pedagogy has produced little empirical research on how youth understand global citizenship. In this increasingly globalized world, this gap in the research is a serious lacuna. My research examines the intersection of hip-hop, global citizenship education and digital literacies in an effort to increase our understanding of how urban youth from two very different urban areas, (Detroit, Michigan, United States and Sydney, New South Wales, Australia) make sense of and construct identities as global citizens. This study is based on the view that engaging urban and marginalized youth with hip-hop and digital literacies is a way to help them develop the practices of critical global citizenship.     POPULAR MUSIC AND SOCIETY, 2018 https://doi.org/10.1080/03007766.2018.1458275 Towards an African-American Genealogy of Market and Religion in Rap Music Kevin Pyon The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, USA ABSTRACT This essay provides a new reading of the intersections between religion and rap music in its genealogical consideration of how black laborers’ orientations to the market—from the antebellum slave market to the contemporary music industry—have informed their consequent commodifications of race and religion. The essay (1) traces the informal economy and sacred world of the slaves to the twinned births of the modern black prosperity gospel and hip-hop culture and (2) connects the religio-economic modalities of postbellum peddling and celebrity preachers to contemporary black prosperity preachers and hip-hop moguls. Finally, this essay concludes that the commodified formulations of race and religion in rap music represent transformations of spiritual and market categories of “authenticity” and “freedom” which have structured and sometimes limited our understandings of distinct articulations of race, religion, and the market throughout African-American history.     THE RAP MUSIC VIDEO: STORYTELLING BY MEANS OF GENDER EXPLOITATION Kristina Lee Diaz University of Florida The Music Video: Story Telling by Means of Gender Exploitation 1 Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the formulaic gender themes found in rap music videos as it relates to the gender stereotypical ways it portrays women. The focus on this specific genre of music stems from the considerable social impact it has had on youth culture in recent years. Using content analysis on a purposive sample of ten songs found on a Billboard.com’s 2009 year end countdown, five gender-related themes were generated and it was found that most of the songs contained either misogynistic or gender-role messages. In addition, this study addressed questions relating to how repetitive themes may impact youth, particularly young women and how society may best mediate the effects of the messages being put out by music video media outlets.
