Thank you both for not giving up on me even when things were moving very slow. I am especially thankful for your support in my work in the combination of popular music/performance studies. A big thank you goes to Siren Leirvåg for guidance in the literature of theatre studies. Everybody at the Institute of Music at UiO for helping me when I came back after my student hiatus in 2007. I cannot over-exaggerate my gratitude towards Rob Lee, webmaster at www.thewho.com for helping me with finding important information on that site and his attempts at getting me an interview with one of the boys. The work being done on that site is fantastic. Also, a big thank you to my fellow Who fans. Discussing Who with you makes liking the band more fun.

  • Ruth Frankel Professor Swedberg CAS WS214 May 2, 2013 Carole
Ruth Frankel Professor Swedberg CAS WS214 May 2, 2013 Carole King: A Consequential Female Artist in Achievement and Message Carole King, a Brooklyn born singersongwriter, most associated with the music of the 1960s and 1970s, is significant in that she, according to her biographer James Perone, “almost singlehandedly opened the doors of popular music songwriting to women” (1). She also became the first female artist in American popular music in complete control of her own work. Her writing was prolific. She has written 500 copyrighted songs throughout her career and has had tremendous commercial success (Havranek 236). King’s greatest success was the release of the 1973 album Tapestry, which remained on the charts for 302 weeks (Perone 6). Though her cultural impact is often underappreciated, Carole King has been an important contributor to advancement of women in the music industry and a positive role model to the female audiences of her generation. It is even hard to find academic sources reflecting the success and cultural attributions of King. Overall, it appears that sexism has faded the memory of Carole King’s contribution to women in music. Again and again, King impact has not been recognized or remembered. For example, in the book Go, Girl, Go!: The Women’s Revolution in Music by James Dickerson, King’s name is mentioned only once. Dickerson writes, “Carly Simon and Carole King were the two most successful singersongwriters of the decade, and of the two, it was Carly who was dazzling the world with her toothy smile and sexy album covers” (77).

EVERLYPEDIA (formerly The Everly Brothers Index – TEBI) Coordinated by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik A complete (as far as is possible) index/encyclopaedia on every facet of Don & Phil Everly, covering their lives, careers, influences and connections – of course, from us as huge fans, with all due respect to them and their families. For more recording information, see also the various detailed discography lists on the EBI website (Everly.Net); for lyrics to songs, please refer to the Lyric List on the same website (http://www.everly.net/file/disco/disco.htm ). KEY/GLOSSARY/NOTES: • WB: Warner Brothers • EBs: The Everly Brothers • LPs, CDs etc. are generally (but not always) referred to throughout as ‘albums’. • Other than important (re)releases, only the original/initial album release is referred to. • Entries are listed under the first letter, including titles that start with a bracket, e.g. ‘(Why Am I) Chained To A Memory’, but exclude ‘The’ in which case they are listed under the second word. • Surnames or family names come first in the index. • Headings are coloured blue for song and album titles and maroon for everything else. • All words in bold type in the text are cross-references to other main entry headings – although no doubt we’ve missed a few! • Entries are generally aimed to be informative and we have attempted to keep them brief though some are lengthy due to the importance and significance in the life and career of Don and Phil. However, in some cases, due to the limitations of space and the huge volume of material available elsewhere, details have been kept to a bare minimum and relate mainly to the ‘Everly connection’ – e.g.
