Homes Hogue Gary Myers Professor of Anthropology Interim Dean of College of Arts and Sciences Name: Keith Allen Baca Date of Degree: May 3, 2008 Institution: Mississippi State University Major Field: Applied Anthropology Major Professor: Dr. Janet Rafferty Title of Study: ELEMENTAL ANALYSIS OF MARKSVILLE-STYLE PREHISTORIC CERAMICS FROM MISSISSIPPI AND ALABAMA Pages in Study: 129 Candidate for Degree of Master of Arts Distinctive Marksville-style pottery is characteristic of the Middle Woodland period (200 B.C. – A.D. 500) in the Lower Mississippi River Valley and adjacent regions. Marksville material is common in the Lower Mississippi Valley, and the scarcity of similar pottery in northeastern Mississippi and western Alabama has caused claims that Marksville pots were imported into those areas; however, they may have been locally made. To test these alternative possibilities, the elemental composition of some Marksville-style potsherds, other pottery, and clays from various archaeological sites spanning the above regions was characterized using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The results show that the analyzed Marksville-style pottery shares similar elemental profiles with locally common wares and local clays in the sample, allowing the conclusion that all of these Marksville specimens were made in the regions where they were found.     A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF GLASS TRADE BEADS IN NORTH AMERICA Karlis Karklins and Roderick Sprague Originally published in 1980, and long out of print, this bibliography is reproduced here as it continues to be a valuable research tool for the archaeologist, material culture researcher, museologist, and serious collector. Although some of the references are out-of-date, the majority contain information that is still very useful to those seeking comparative archaeological data on trade beads. The bibliography contains 455 annotated entries that deal primarily with glass beads recovered from archaeological contexts in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. A number of works that deal with bead manufacturing techniques, bead classification systems, and other related topics are also included. An index arranged by political unit, temporal range, and other categories adds to the usefulness of the bibliography. INTRODUCTION Since a thorough review of pertinent literature is prerequisite to the meaningful study of a specific artifact category, this bibliography is offered as an aid to those who are carrying out research on glass trade beads found in the continental United States, Canada, and Mexico. The references in this bibliography are primarily those which will be useful in dating bead collections, establishing bead chronologies, and compiling distribution charts of individual bead types. However, references dealing with bead manufacturing techniques, beadwork, bead classification systems, and the historical uses and values of trade beads have also been listed. Some sources dealing with beads from areas outside North America have been included because they have a definite bearing on the study of glass beads in North America.

(SURA, Inc.) conducted a Phase I cultural resource survey of 1,170 acres (ac) (473.5 hectares [ha]) west of Beauregard Regional Airport located in DeRidder, Beauregard Parish, Louisiana. A total of 6,335 shovel tests were excavated. Four archaeological sites were discovered—BPASA-1 (16BE104), BPASA-2 (16BE105), BPASA-3 (16BE106), and BPASA-4 (16BE107). The authors suggest that because of the disturbance due to modern hunting activities and pine cultivation, these sites do not possess the qualities of significance and are not eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion D. Four isolated finds were also noted. None of these finds contain sufficient artifacts, or secure enough proveniences to be considered for the NRHP. Newsletter Winter 2017 -18 ________________________________________________________ “The Times They Are A-Changin” -Bob Dylan Mr. Dylan wasn’t referring to the SPA when he sang those lyrics for the first time in 1964, but he may as well have. This fall has been a time of change for the society. Dr. Jonathan Burns was appointed as first Vice- President. Jonathan is a professor at Juniata College, and is heavily involved in the Pennsylvania Archaeology Council (PAC). He has done extensive work on frontier forts in Pennsylvania, and last summer conducted an archaeological field school on the James W. Hatch Site, a lithic reduction/quarry site near State College. We are very excited about having him as an officer. Dr. Roger Moeller is the new editor of Pennsylvania Archaeologist. Roger brings years of experience publishing scholarly material, and is actively working on updating the journal format and producing the next issue. As many of you have noticed, the journal has fallen behind, but we are working hard to catch up. The first issue in the new format will be 87(1), which was originally due in January of 2017, but because of the lack of manuscripts, will now be printed in Early Spring 2018. We are actively trying to catch up on the missed issues. Besides the changes in the VP and editor positions, the SPA has been actively teaming with preservation partners across the state to promote archaeology in the Commonwealth. I was fortunate enough to be invited to take part in Preservation Awareness Roundtable in Harrisburg, sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office.
