We are in USDA Hardiness Zone 9 (minimum expected winter temperature of 20°), and AHS Heat Zone 8 (91-120 days > 86°). Plants in brown are annuals or biennials. 1 Planting Time Outdoors is for transplants/plants (T) or seeds (S). Timing assumes that the average last frost date for the year is Mar 15 and average first frost date is Dec 3. 2 Heat Tolerant - able to grow in North Florida summer temperatures and humidity. 3 Min. Temp F° - the minimum temperature a plant can experience and survive. Damage, die back (plants resprout in the spring) and reduced harvest for the season may occur at warmer temperatures. Variations can be caused by several factors such as age of plant, length of cold, root establishment and type of cultivar. 4 Water needs - as with all plantings, this is the moisture recommendation after establishment. 5 Square Foot Gardening technique. 6Although the seeds of most plants don’t need light to germinate, those of many of the herbs do. When an entry lists “Surface”, the seeds are to be scattered on potting soil in a container or on prepared garden soil, and lightly pressed against the soil (good contact improves moisture retention). If outdoors, they should be lightly dusted with a very fine cover of soil or vermiculite to protect the seed. Indoors, no cover is needed. The goal is to shield the seed from drying out but allow exposure to light. Use a fine mist spray to keep moist until germination. If only a vegetative option is listed, either seed may not be produced, is sterile or has very low viability, seed produced plants wouldn’t have desired qualities of the parent, or vegetative propagation is much easier. 7 Rotate plant families. Avoid successively planting herbs from the same family in the same area of the garden. Although often available as plants, culantro, nasturtium, parsley, dill, borage, cilantro, chervil, and fennel are more typically grown from seed because they can be difficult to transplant. If not grown in a biodegradable pot, use care when transplanting these. How to fertilize: In general, herbs should be fertilized moderately to avoid stimulating lush growth that is less flavorful. Fertilize at half recommended amount when you do fertilize, if herbs are in garden soil. Container grown plants may need more fertilizer. A research on wild growing savory from the Istrian peninsula was carried out at Polytechnic of Rijeka, Agricultural Department in Poreč. Drying kinetics and influence of drying temperatures (35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60°C) were investigated on selected parameters of savory collected in winter 2012, in the area of Rovinjsko selo in Istria, Croatia. The percentage of dried leaves in fresh herb, essential oil content and proportion of dried leaves in fresh and dried herb were defined. The average of initial water content was 80,06 %, essential oil content 0,776 ml100g -1 and the proportion of dried leaves was 50,56 % in the dried herb. Higher drying temperatures expectedly reduced the essential oil content. The reduction of essential oil content 425 at 45°C was 14,8 %, while further temperature increase to 50°C resulted with a 59,4 % lower content of essential oil in the drug.

Ingredients • 2 cups dried white beans, chickpeas or cranberry beans • 1 large celery rib, in 3 pieces • ½ yellow onion, halved again through the root end • 2 bay leaves • Sea salt • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus more for garnish • 2 cups sliced leeks, white and pale green part only • 2 medium carrots, diced • 2 to 3 cloves garlic, minced • 1-1/2 to 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill, plus more for garnish • Freshly ground black pepper • Pickled Greek pepperoncini, sliced • 2 ounces feta Directions Soak the dried beans overnight in cold water to cover generously. Drain and place in a heavy pot with 1-1/2 quarts water. Add celery, onion, bay leaves and 1 teaspoon salt. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Cover and adjust the heat to maintain a gentle simmer. Cook until the beans are tender, 1 hour or more. Check occasionally to make sure they are still submerged in liquid; add boiling water if necessary to keep them barely covered. When the beans are done, let them cool in their liquid. Discard the celery, onion and bay leaves. Set aside 1 cup of whole beans. In a food processor or blender, puree the remaining beans with enough of the cooking liquid to achieve the texture you like. (I like my soup on the thin side.) It is a member of the parsley family with a mild flavor. This spring herb is often used in egg dishes. It is sometimes called French parsley. Chervil takes like a delicate cross between tarragon and parsley. Chervil has a mild flavor with hints of licorice or anise, but without those flavors coming through strongly. Chervil leaves are delicate and curly, somewhat resembling carrot greens. They are a little paler and have frillier leaves than flat-leaf parsley. Some bunches have tightly-closed leaves. You may find bunches that have blossoms, but you should avoid those because the herb will have turned bitter. Uses for Chervil…..Because of its delicate flavor, chervil is usually included in recipes, such as salads and soups It is added at the last minute as the flavor won't hold up in prolonged cooking; a good addition to omelets and is commonly used in making a classic Béarnaise sauce. Croat. 64 (2), 313–322, 2005 CODEN: ABCRA25 ISSN 0365–0588 Phytochemical composition and antimicrobial activity of Satureja montana L. and Satureja cuneifolia Ten. essential oils NADA BEZI]*, MIRJANA SKO^IBU[I],VALERIJA DUNKI] Department of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Education, University of Split, Teslina12, 21000 Split, Croatia The phytochemical composition and the antibacterial activity of the essential oils ob- tained from the aerial parts of two Lamiaceae species, winter savory (Satureja montana L.) and wild savory (Satureja cuneifolia Ten.) were evaluated. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of the isolated oils resulted in the identification of twenty compounds in the oil of S. montana representing 97% of the total oil and 25 compounds of S. cuneifolia, representing 80% of the total oil. Carvacrol was the major constituent of the S. montana oil (45.7%). Other important compounds were the monoterpenic hydrocar- bons p-cymene, g-terpinene and the oxygenated compounds carvacrol methyl ether, borneol and thymol. Conversely, the oil of S. cuneifolia contained a low percentage of carvacrol and thymol. The major constituents of wild savory oil were sesquiterpenes b-cubebene (8.7%), spathulenol, b-caryophyllene, followed by the monoterpenic hydro- carbons limonene and a-pinene. The screening of the antimicrobial activities of essential oils were individually evalated against nine microorganisms, using a disc diffusion metod. The oil of S. montana exhibited greater antimicrobial activity than the oil of wild savory. Maximum activity of winter savory oil was observed against Escherichia coli, the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and against yeast (Candida albicans).
