By LT. Cmdr. Annette Hoppa The past weekend we (John and I) went to the Ravenwood Castle in New Plym- outh, Ohio. We had the best time ever in this old-looking castle. It had the feel of a castle with a new twist. Most of the rooms are themed, ours was the King Arthur Suite. The room had a mural on the wall that depicted the scene from the King Arthur and Excalibur as well as the knights from the round table. The best part was no cell service or tv we were complete- ly unplugged. No one bothering you asking silly questions or drama to read about on social media. LOL. The grounds were great with some trails we were able to walk and when we went to town about 20 minutes outside of Plymouth, we did some antique shopping. I would recommend this place to anyone willing to leave all troubles at home and just unplug and walk around the grounds. They have cab- ins and firepits, to sit by the fire and spend the night. Everything was just beautiful. Volume 31, Issue 11 Page 4 First Officer’s Log Things have finally calmed down some. It was crazy for a while. But my craft shows are done for the season so I can relax a little…sure. That happened. It lasted about a week before I was picking up a crochet hook and pattern, or setting up my wheel to spin again. I kept thinking of all the lovely fiber just waiting for me to make it into yarn. And all the yarn waiting for me to make it into something. I won’t be returning to one craft show; had an “issue” with the person running it so after 10 years, I will find a different one. I met my friend Vince D’Amato in 1983 when we were both cast in Kent Trumbull’s summer production of “Godspell.” We were instant friends. Whenever we met after that, it was as if no time had passed and we picked up the conversation where it left off. One of the funniest things was during “Godspell.” Another guy saw us talking and after Vince left, he came to me and said very nastily, “You know he’s gay.” I answered, “So? I don’t plan to marry him.” Then Vince came back to me and said that he had wanted to tell me himself but this other guy probably beat him to it. “Okay, what?” I asked. “I’m gay,” Vince said, and I could see he was all but holding his breath waiting to see how I’d respond. “So? I’m not,” I said simply. “Are you going to hold that against me?” He looked shocked, then he got this quirky grin and shook his head. “Just keep your hands off my boyfriend and we’ll get along fine.” We both cracked up at that and that was all there was to it. He introduced me to his boyfriend when we did a play together several years later. We kept losing the actor for one of the roles until, four days before opening, I called him and asked if he’d do it. He agreed and one of the funniest and best bits I’ve ever seen was born. It was so funny, I couldn’t look at him or it would put me on the floor laughing helplessly. (His character spilled a drink and when he looked absently for something to wipe it up, on impulse Vince used his tie to mop at the spill. Utter- ly hysterical; I laugh to this day when I remember it.) Over the years we ran into each other, then lost track until I found him on Facebook. I found out he was married to the man he’d introduced me to all those years ago, Stuart. About a year ago, I asked the crew for good thoughts and health energy for my friend Vince; he’d been feeling not well and found out it was cancer and it was spread all over. The docs said about a year if he was lucky. He opted for the treatments. Sometimes he was doing well; others, not so good. The second week of No- vember, he ended up back in the hospital. On November 20th, Vince’s husband Stuart let us know that he had passed early the day before. Vince was brilliant as an actor, compassionate as a man. He was gifted and gracious and joy- ous and humble. If I seem a little sad for a while, it’s because while there is another star in the heav- ens now, this world is a little darker for those who know him and love him. Janice XO, CSO, RDC-Star Crafters And grateful to have had Vince in my life. When we meet again, I’m sure we’ll pick up where we left off.
