They were photographers of stage productions and personalities, as well as magazine photo stories about theatrical subjects. This collection of photographic files from Abeles' studio consists predominantly of publicity photographs (some with manuscript notes) for individuals in the performing arts, 1935-1975 (bulk 1950-1970). The collection is arranged in two series, I. Prints (subdivided into A. Portraits and B. Publicity), and II. Negatives (arranged and subdivided to parallel the prints). Approximately 1800 subjects are represented. There are about 11,850 photographic prints (including 8 x 10's, 5 x 7's, proofs, and contact sheets) and 18,500 negatives. The prints in the Portraits subseries are arranged alphabetically. The individuals represented in the portraits are mainly actors and actresses, but agents, artists, athletes, authors, beauty contestants, cartoonists, choreographers, comedians, composers, conductors, critics, dancers, designers, directors, librettists, lyricists, musicians, playwrights, politicians, producers, singers, television hosts, and many other personalities are also included. The files are generally identified as to the year or years in which the photographs were taken. Many celebrated performers of today were captured early in their careers, e.g., Jane Fonda (1960), Dustin Hoffman (1957), Bette Midler (1967), Paul Newman (1953), and Christopher Walken (1968). The portraits are usually publicity shots, but occasionally there are photographs that show actors in character, rehearsal, or performance. The Publicity subseries contains prints representing other commercial work done by Abeles and are arranged in these categories: Airlines, Art Shows, Awards, Buildings and Restaurants, Business, Fashion, Film Reviews, Health, Miscellany, Music, New York City Life, Parties, Stage Shows, Sylvania, Television Shows, and Theater Related. Some of these photo sessions were done for Time or for the New York Times . 2 Abeles, Joseph, circa 1908-1991 Series I. Prints Subseries A. Kert, Larry (1930-1991) Larry Kert and Carol Lawrence performing on by Craig Kaczorowski the Ed Sullivan Show in 1958. Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Film still from a YouTube video. Entry Copyright © 2010 glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com The gay actor and singer Larry Kert originated the lead romantic role of Tony in the landmark 1957 Broadway musical West Side Story. With his expressive, vibrant tenor, he introduced some of the most memorable songs in the Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim score, including "Maria," "Tonight," and "Something's Coming." In 1970, Kert triumphed again on Broadway in another Sondheim musical, Company, as Robert, a New York bachelor observing the strains and tensions in the marriages of his best friends, as well as struggling to commit emotionally to each of his three girlfriends. Other Broadway shows involving Kert were unfortunately short-lived, and his later career was devoted mainly to cabaret, television, and regional theater. He was born Frederick Lawrence Kert in Los Angeles, California on December 5, 1930 into a comfortably middle-class family. His father was a jeweler and his mother an actress. He had a brother, Morton, and two sisters, Evelyn and the singer later known as Anita Ellis. He initially attended Hollywood High School but transferred to the Hollywood Professional School in Los Angeles. While still in school, Kert performed as an extra and stunt double in several movies, including Lassie Come Home (1943), where he was a stand-in for the film's star Roddy McDowell. After graduation, Kert took some classes at Los Angeles City College but soon dropped out and moved to New York City where he studied with the celebrated acting teacher Sanford Meisner.

Material traces refer to both the moving image products and the assortment of documentation about the processes of television as industrial and creative endeavors. By identifying the development of television-specific archives and collecting areas in the 1950s to the 1970s, the dissertation contributes to television studies, specifically pointing out how television materials were conceived as cultural and historical materials “worthy” of preservation and academic study.

"Wyler knew how to get to the truth of each actor's capacity," actor-director Vincent Sherman, who played Harry Becker in William Wyler's "Counsellor at Law," told the Goldwyn Theater audience after a screening of the ftlm in July. "Counsellor at Law," Wyler's 1933 examination of the business and personal issues confronting a high-powered New York attorney, was screened as part of the Academy's centennial salute to the Oscar winning director. "Wyler wasn't always articulate about the details of the scene, TERENCE STAMP but he knew when it was right," Sherman said. "He knew how to squeeze every ounce of emotion that was in a scene and to get the best out of everybody." Sherman was joined on the panel by actor Terence Stamp, who starred in "The Collector," for WYLER'S BEN-HUR, CHARLTON HESTON , IS which Wyler earned the last of his directing nominations; actress Carroll Baker, who was directed INTRODUCED FROM THE AUDIENCE. by Wyler in "The Big Country;" and writer Fay Kanin, who with husband Michael was a colleague of Wyler.
