    Program Notes by Ed Wight ALLELUIA British and American composer Tarik O’Regan remains active on both sides of the Atlantic. Born in London in 1978, he attended Pembroke College, Oxford. O’Regan became composer-in-residence for Corpus Christi College, Oxford in 2000, which launched his professional career as a composer. He also served on the music faculty of Trinity College, Cambridge. Moving to the United States, O’Regan won a Fulbright Fellowship to Columbia University in 2004, another Fellowship at Harvard, and in 2010 was subseQuently appointed to the faculty of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. His compositions won the British Composer Award in for vocal composition in 2005 and liturgical composition in 2007, and have been nominated for two Grammy Awards in the United States. While writing a handful of orchestral and chamber works, O’Regan is primarily a vocal composer - with several operas, cantatas, and over sixty works for choir. The Pro Musica Girl’s Chorus of Hungary commissioned this lively 2004 composition. After the brief introduction, the alto voices begin a light, jazz-like syncopated ostinato pattern which lasts throughout the piece. O’Regan soon casts a high-flying soprano melody over it. Listen as the ostinato expands from two to three voices, and the soprano line divides near the end for a wonderful five-voiced climax. PRAYER TO A GAURDIAN ANGEL Born in Lincolnshire in 1958, British composer Patrick Hawes taught at Pangbourne College and Charterhouse School until the age of 40, when he turned to composition full time. Acclaimed in both instrumental and vocal music, he currently lives near the Norfolk coast, and says he is inspired “by the beauty of nature, English literature, and his Christian faith.” His brother Andrew Hawes, an Anglican priest, wrote the lyrics for Prayer to a Guardian Angel.

    Jan. 29, 2006--- JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. -- I hear cowboys are the next big thing. As Oscar season approaches, cowboys are getting notice for walking the line or crossing it. Johnny Cash seemed to be on to this in 1991 when he released the album "The Mystery of Life." Well, partner, there's no mystery about the best place to be a real cowboy: The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Jackson Hole (pop. 8,700). The bar dates back to 1937, and cowpokes like Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Hank Williams Jr. have played the room. Original owner Ben Goe had the first liquor license in the state of Wyoming since the repeal of Prohibition, and the bar is included on the Jackson Hole Historical Society's downtown walking tour. The bar walls are lined with knobbled pine imported from forests in western Wyoming, and the bar top is inlaid with 624 silver dollars. Guests sit at the 75-foot- long bar atop any one of 38 big-butt saddles, with stirrups that were installed in the mid-1980s. Some people sit sidesaddle, others get on and can't get off -- and that's before they've had a couple of cold Teton beers. The dance floor can hold up to 50 swinging couples, and the downtown roadhouse has four very active pool tables. I visited the cowboy bar a year ago after getting a custom cowboy hat made down the street at the Jackson Hole Hat Co. The hats are built one at a time in the back of the store.

The work which has been written for adult voices, a semi chorus of unbroken children’s voices, soprano soloist, chamber orchestra, harp and organ will be premiered in Norwich Cathedral on Saturday 12 July with the English Chamber Orchestra and Elin Manahan Thomas. Many of these articles have outlined the challenges needed to meet the demand for educated workers. Cotter High School has been striving to translate these challenges into opportunities. Across the nation, states are analyzing projections of high school graduates, which sug- gest that in the near future Minnesota will not be producing enough college graduates to meet the total workforce demands of replacing retirees and filling new positions. President of Cotter Schools According to a report by the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, between 2008 and Dr. Craig W. Junker 2030, "Roughly 76 million baby boomers will leave the workforce, some of them retir- ing well before they reach 65. But only 48 million workers in Generation X will be available to replace them." Although there is a growing demand for highly-educated workers in order to sustain and grow the economy, Minnesota will face the prospect of growing education gaps, workforce deficits, and the loss of jobs to other states and nations. Research cited by the Minnesota Private College Council point out that the number of jobs in Minnesota, requiring some college education, will grow by 21 percent from 2002-2012. Jobs in engineering and science related areas are increasing three times faster than other professions, yet a declining number of high school students are prepared for–or encouraged to pursue–related college degrees.
