A Grave for New York and New York 80: Formulating an Arab Identity through the Lens of New York Michelle Hartman From the skyscrapers of mid-town Manhattan to the Brooklyn Bridge, from the Statue of Liberty to the prostitutes of Time Square, from Harlem to Wall Street, images of New York City are some of the most potent representations of the United States around the world. This paper explores how two Arab authors use New York City as a lens through which they for- mulate an Arab identity in and for their literary texts and I am concerned in particular with the way in which gender and race are used in these formulations. The two works I discuss are Adonis’s Qabr min ajl new york (A Grave for New York)1 and Yusuf Idris’s New York 802, published in Arabic in 1971 and 1980 respectively, and both written in Arabic, for an Arab audience. There is no doubt that either work is anything but a scathing critique of New York, used as a metonym for the United States, and in particular its claim to technology and ‘advancement.’ Both pieces clearly advocate resistance to American hegemony in the world and harshly condemn the capitalist greed with which the United States has become syn- onymous throughout the world thus manifesting the political commitment of their authors and conveying a message of Third World solidarity. Michelle Hartman, Assistant Professor Institute of Islamic Studies McGill University, Montreal, Canada 223 Works that deal with relationships between Arabs and Europeans or Arabs and Americans (assumed of course to be distinct categories) are discussed by scholars of Arabic litera- ture as part of the large body of literature dealing with what is usually referred to as the ‘east-west encounter.’ A Grave for New York and New York 80 both certainly fall into this cate- gory and both can also be read more specifically as works that deal with the United States.

  • L'audiovisual Públic Europeu I Youtube

EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY LIBRARY. Special Collections Handlist of Manuscripts, H 29 JOHN WAIN ARCHIVE MSS 2851-2875; MSS 3124-3137 E97.67 Literary manuscripts of John Barrington Wain (1925-1994) were deposited in Edinburgh University Library in 1974, and subsequently added to by the author until 1986, when the whole deposit was purchased by the Library with the help of the Local Museums Purchase Fund. These manuscripts constitute MSS 2851-2874. Some items were deposited after 1985 and these, along with the manuscripts in the possession of the author at his death were purchased in 1996, with the aid of the National Fund for Acquisitions. These manuscripts constitute MSS 3124-3137. Further manuscripts were found by his family subsequently and were gifted in December 1997: these manuscripts constitute E97.67. This group is not sorted or listed and needs to integrated with MSS 3124-3137 as the material is closely linked with the material in this group, e.g. further mss and tss of his Oxford trilogy. Wain’s incoming correspondence and outgoing letters to Philip Larkin were purchased with the help of the National Fund for Acquisitions in 1999 (E99.01). These are included in MS 2875. The manuscript of his first novel, Hurry on Down (1953), has not survived, but notebooks, mss and typescripts of most of his later novels, short stories, poetry, plays and criticism are present. The list below was compiled at different times, and conventions regarding italicization, etc. are not consistent. • Jackson Hole Cowboys
Jan. 29, 2006--- JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. -- I hear cowboys are the next big thing. As Oscar season approaches, cowboys are getting notice for walking the line or crossing it. Johnny Cash seemed to be on to this in 1991 when he released the album "The Mystery of Life." Well, partner, there's no mystery about the best place to be a real cowboy: The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Jackson Hole (pop. 8,700). The bar dates back to 1937, and cowpokes like Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Hank Williams Jr. have played the room. Original owner Ben Goe had the first liquor license in the state of Wyoming since the repeal of Prohibition, and the bar is included on the Jackson Hole Historical Society's downtown walking tour. The bar walls are lined with knobbled pine imported from forests in western Wyoming, and the bar top is inlaid with 624 silver dollars. Guests sit at the 75-foot- long bar atop any one of 38 big-butt saddles, with stirrups that were installed in the mid-1980s. Some people sit sidesaddle, others get on and can't get off -- and that's before they've had a couple of cold Teton beers. The dance floor can hold up to 50 swinging couples, and the downtown roadhouse has four very active pool tables. I visited the cowboy bar a year ago after getting a custom cowboy hat made down the street at the Jackson Hole Hat Co. The hats are built one at a time in the back of the store.

  • The Mixtape: a Case Study in Emancipatory Journalism
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE MIXTAPE: A CASE STUDY IN EMANCIPATORY JOURNALISM Jared A. Ball, Doctor of Philosophy, 2005 Directed By: Dr. Katherine McAdams Associate Professor Philip Merrill College of Journalism Associate Dean, Undergraduate Studies During the 1970s the rap music mixtape developed alongside hip-hop as an underground method of mass communication. Initially created by disc-jockeys in an era prior to popular “urban” radio and video formats, these mixtapes represented an alternative, circumventing traditional mass medium. However, as hip-hop has come under increasing corporate control within a larger consolidated media ownership environment, so too has the mixtape had to face the challenge of maintaining its autonomy. This media ownership consolidation, vertically and horizontally integrated, has facilitated further colonial control over African America and has exposed as myth notions of democratizing media in an undemocratic society. Acknowledging a colonial relationship the writer created FreeMix Radio: The Original Mixtape Radio Show where the mixtape becomes both a source of free cultural expression and an anti-colonial emancipatory journalism developed as a “Third World” response to the needs of postcolonial nation-building. This dissertation explores the contemporary colonizing effects of media consolidation, cultural industry function, and copyright ownership, concluding that the development of an underground press that recognizes the tremendous disparities in advanced technological access (the “digital divide”) appears to be the only viable alternative. The potential of the mixtape to serve as a source of emancipatory journalism is studied via a three-pronged methodological approach: 1) An explication of literature and theory related to the history of and contemporary need for resistance media, 2) an analysis of the mixtape as a potential underground mass press and 3) three focus group reactions to the mixtape as resistance media, specifically, the case study of the writer’s own FreeMix Radio: The Original Mixtape Radio Show.

  • My Children, Teaching, and Nimrod the Word
XIV Passions: My Children, Teaching, and Nimrod The word passion has most often been associated with strong sexual desire or lust. I have felt a good deal of that kind of passion in my life but I prefer not to speak of it at this moment. Instead, it is the appetite for life in a broader sense that seems to have driven most of my actions. Moreover, the former craving is focused on an individual (unless the sexual drive is indiscriminant) and depends upon that individual for a response in order to intensify or even maintain. Fixating on my first husband—sticking to him no matter what his response, not being able to say goodbye to him —almost killed me. I had to shift the focus of my sexual passion to another and another and another in order to receive the spark that would rekindle and sustain me. That could have been dangerous; I was lucky. But with the urge to create, the intense passion to “make something,” there was always another outlet, another fulfillment just within reach.
