It happened to the river steamer Sultana at two in the morning on April 27, 1865, when her boiler exploded on the Mississippi. Somewhere between 1,700 and 1,800 men lost their lives, when Sultana blew up, caught fire and sank, a few miles above Memphis, as she was passing a cluster of islands known in those days as the Hen and Chickens. The 1,700 to 1,800 men were part of a cargo — that’s the right word here — of men that Sultana was taking home to Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and there- abouts. The rest of the cargo — about 500 or 600 men — were saved.     Heidegger 1 Galloping onto the Throne: Queen Elizabeth I and the Symbolism of the Horse University of California, San Diego, Department of History, Undergraduate Honors Thesis By: Hannah von Heidegger Advisor: Ulrike Strasser, Ph.D. April 2019 Heidegger 2 Introduction As she prepared for the impending attack of the Spanish Armada, Queen Elizabeth I of England purportedly proclaimed proudly while on horseback to her troops, “I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too.”1 This line superbly captures the two identities that Elizabeth had to balance as a queen in the early modern period: the limitations imposed by her sex and her position as the leader of England. Viewed through the lens of stereotypical gender expectations in the early modern period, these two roles appear incompatible. Yet, Elizabeth I successfully managed the unique path of a female monarch with no male counterpart. Elizabeth was Queen of England from the 17th of November 1558, when her half-sister Queen Mary passed away, until her own death from sickness on March 24th, 1603, making her one of England’s longest reigning monarchs. She deliberately avoided several marriages, including high-profile unions with Philip II of Spain, King Eric of Sweden, and the Archduke Charles of Austria. Elizabeth’s position in her early years as ruler was uncertain due to several factors: a strong backlash to the rise of female rulers at the time; her cousin Mary Queen of Scots’ Catholic hereditary claim; and her being labeled a bastard by her father, Henry VIII.

    1 Sir Francis Drake’s attack on St. Augustine, 1586 Introduction Five years after leading the first English circumnavigation of the globe in 1577–1580, Sir Francis Drake led a raid against Spanish settlements in the Caribbean including Santiago, Santo Domingo, and Cartagena, as well as St. Augustine (in present-day Florida). This engraving, by Baptista Boazio, was made to accompany a book describing Drake’s 1586 expedition, A Summarie and True Discourse of Sir Francis Drake’s West Indian Voyage (published in 1588– 1589). The illustration depicts the attack of Drake’s fleet of twenty-three ships on St. Augustine, which was captured and destroyed on May 28–30, 1586. Although Boazio was not on the voyage, he worked from firsthand accounts. The engraving is the earliest known surviving view of a New World city north of Mexico. Drake operated as a privateer under a “letter of marque and reprisal” issued by Queen Elizabeth I. His operations were part of the long-standing and escalating tensions between Protestant England and Catholic Spain. The Boazio illustrations and A Summarie and True Discourse of Sir Francis Drake’s West Indian Voyage were published following the English victory over the Spanish Armada in 1588.     The Hobson Incident Late on Saturday night, April 26, 1952, U.S.S. Wasp was completing night maneuvers some 1,200 miles east of New York. She turned into the wind to recover her aircraft. The skipper of the USS Hobson, a destroyer-minesweeper, apparently became confused in the dark and made a few turns that ended with the Hobson cutting in front of Wasp. The Wasp cut the Hobson in two. From there, it rapidly got worse. The Hobson was hit aft of midship, and the entire ship sank in four minutes. Her captain and 174 other men were lost. In rolling over, Hobson’s keel sliced off an 80-ton section of Wasp’s bow, from keel to about waterline, the section being carried away, with interior deck levels, oil tanks, fittings, and gears. Those men from the Hobson who were fortunate enough to be thrown clear and rescued were covered with oil from Wasp’s broken tanks. Fortunately, there were no crew quarters located in Wasp’s bow, and Wasp, in fact, suffered no casualties in the affair. Wasp had been under orders to relieve the carrier Tarawa farther east. Her bulkheads holding against the open bow, she turned for repairs at New York. Proceeding at a ten-knot speed, often reduced to near zero when heavy going forced her to proceed stern-first, she almost lost her two anchor chains ($40,000 each). Wasp, drydock-free by May 19, then ammunitioned and service fitted, was back on sea duty in less than five weeks, a record for major ship repairs.
