Your Last Resort (3:59) Genre: Punk Rock Country of artist (group): USA Year of publication: 2021 Audio codec: MP3 Rip Type: tracks Audio bitrate: 320 kbps Length: 36:25. Single Album. Single Album is the 14th studio outing from West Coast punk stalwarts NOFX following their 2020 split-LP West Coast vs. Wessex with English singer/songwriter Frank Turner. Initially conceived as a double album, the band's sessions were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and they subsequently refocused their effort into this shorter and typically wry "single-album" edition. Offering no major shake-ups to their tried and true formula, frontman/bassist Fat Mike and his colleagues nonetheless get down to business cranking out their signature blend with precision and vigor on darkly comic cuts like "I Love You More Than I Hate Me" and "Fish in a Gun Barrel." NOFX even revisit their past, enlisting Avenged Sevenfold to help reinterpret the 1994 fan favorite "Linoleum" into the spirited "Linewleum." Neither a boon nor a blemish to their already-stout catalog, Single Album should serve longtime fans well enough without pulling a lot of new ones in. NOFX – Single Album (Album Review) Much has been made of NOFX ’s upcoming release Single Album , and how Fat Mike was off his head on drugs for most of the writing and recording, leading to the album being darker and more personal. And even a casual fan can see the stark difference between this album and the more frivolous tracks of previous albums, despite NOFX regularly delving into tragedy (see ‘I’m So Sorry Tony’ from First Ditch Effort – awesome track) and politics ( War on Errorism being a highlight). In saying that though, there is some silliness to be found in Single Album . Opening with a, just under six minute, epic ‘The Big Drag’ has a heavier, experimental sound, with an unpredictable melody although its lyrics are somewhat optimistic, with its promise to live life to the fullest. ‘I Love You More Than I Hate Me’ , released last year during the pandemic, is a more traditional NOFX song, with its dry lyrics and punk rock chord progression. ‘Fuck Euphemism’ explores Fat Mike’s sexuality with graphic, unashamedly in your face lyrics, like Fat Mike only can. Released in 2018, ‘Fish In A Gun Barrel’ , a ska/ reggae hybrid, stands out for being musically different from the rest of the album, but its socio- political message of gun ownership and gun control is, unfortunately, significant in the US anytime over the last few decades. ‘Birmingham’ continues to explore dire situations, with Fat Mike telling the story of his drug addiction, specifically how he scraped cocaine off the floor while in the titular town. The silliest song on the album ‘Linewleum’ is both a homage with its tune, and a parody, “ I’m taking our one well known song and trying to make it not very good”, “ We voted to pull the plug and euthanise Linoleum”, of the NOFX classic ‘Linoleum’ , which has been covered so many times, that the band itself is baffled by its popularity. ‘My Bro Cancervive Cancer’ is a song about how the band was, how do I put this, ‘pressured’ to write a song about a fan with cancer, by said fan. While ‘Grieve Soto’ , a song about Adolescents ’ Steve Soto , is very much eulogising the late musician, turning meta half way through, looking at hate thrown Fat Mike’s way. Starting with a country twang, ‘Doors and Fours’ is probably the darkest song on the album, with imagery of death and drug overdoses littering the song, specifically referencing LA in the 1980’s. Ending the album with ‘Your Last Resort’ , that starts off as a piano ballad before segueing into an unrelenting driving punk rock song, the song explores heartbreak with the refrain “Was I just your last resort?” Single Album , titled that as it was originally a planned to be double album, is, on a whole, very much a reflection of Fat Mike’s time with drugs and as such majority of the songs are quite intense. The album explores different sounds, and isn’t a straight up punk rock album, but listening to NOFX’ s previous effort First Ditch Effort , this isn’t so surprising. Anyone who is refuses to listen to NOFX beyond the late 1990’s, will be disappointed—some fans will take a while to adapt to the musical variety while others will appreciate the diversity. The only question is—which one are you? NOFX – Single Album tracklisting: 1. The Big Drag 2. I Love You More Than I Hate Me 3. Fuck Euphemism 4. Fish In A Gun Barrel 5. Birmingham 6. Linewleum 7. PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • The Clash and Mass Media Messages from the Only Band That Matters
THE CLASH AND MASS MEDIA MESSAGES FROM THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS Sean Xavier Ahern A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2012 Sean Xavier Ahern All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis analyzes the music of the British punk rock band The Clash through the use of media imagery in popular music in an effort to inform listeners of contemporary news items. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. Viewing The Clash as a “news giving” punk rock band that inundated their lyrics, music videos and live performances with communication images, The Clash used their position as a popular act to inform their audience, asking them to question their surroundings and “know your rights.” iv For Pat and Zach Ahern Go Easy, Step Lightly, Stay Free. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the help of many, many people.

  • Get 'Em out by Friday the Official Release Dates 1968-78 Introduction
Genesis: Get ‘Em Out By Friday The Official Release Dates 1968-78 Introduction Depending on where one looks for the information, the original release dates of Genesis singles and albums are often misreported. This article uses several sources, including music paper cuttings, websites and books, to try and determine the most likely release date in the UK for their officially released product issued between 1968 and 1978. For a detailed analysis to be completed beyond 1978 will require the input of others that know that era far better than I with the resources to examine it in appropriate levels of detail. My own collection of source material essentially runs dry after 1978. As most people searching for release dates are likely to go to Wikipedia that is where this search for the truth behind Genesis’ back catalogie. The dates claimed on Wikipedia would themselves have come from a number of sources referenced by contributors over the years but what these references lack is the evidence to back up their claims. This article aims to either confirm or disprove these dates with the added bonus of citing where this information stems from. It’s not without a fair share of assumptions and educated deductions but it offers more on this subject than any previously published piece. The main sources consulted in the writing of this article are as follows: 1. The Genesis File Melody Maker 16 December 1972 2. Genesis Information Newsletter Issue No. 1 October 1976 3. Wax Fax by Barry Lazzell - a series of articles on Genesis releases published in Sounds over several weeks in 1977 4.

  • L'uomo: Interview with Fat Mike
Leggi l'articolo su beautynews L'Uomo: interview with Fat Mike Skateboarding is now a global phenomenon. But skate punk is still very much a California thing. And one of the friendliest, most talkative representatives of that movement is surely Fat Mike, the lead singer and bassist of NOFX. Formed in 1983 by a group of Los Angeles skaters linked to the classic skateboarding magazine Thrasher, over the years NOFX has tirelessly toured the world and recorded many outstanding albums – including Punk in Drublic, Heavy Petting Zoo and White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean – which have sold over eight million copies. Fat Mike also created Fat Wreck Chords, one of America’s most successful indie record labels. Back in 2004 he was the man behind punkvoter.com, which he launched to mobilise young people against then President George W. Bush. In early 2021, NOFX released their new album called Single Album. Fat Mike now has a 16-year-old daughter, but he still swears and has spiked blue hair, likes to wear dresses on weekends, and states his political views even if the conversation isn’t about politics. Punk forever. I read that you’re super busy producing bands and even doing a musical. What else do you have going on these days? It’s been a crazy fucking year! Covid didn’t slow me down at all! I just figured, I can’t play, so I write every day. I have 40 new songs I’m working on. I’ve been sober for a few months and I try to exercise every day.

For over sixty years, the ability for artists to package a cohesive collection of performances has remained of paramount priority and an art within itself, notwithstanding the flurry of technological innovations that have altered the album’s size, shape, length, and interactivity.

  • Using Machines to Define Musical Creativity
Using Machines to Define Musical Creativity MUSSS3140: Dissertation Mia Windsor Website: https://miawindsor.com/ Email: [email protected] Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of BA Music. School of Music, University of Leeds, April 2021 Abstract This dissertation aims to assess whether machines are capable of creativity in music composition, how they are capable of musical creativity and whether this helps to define what musical creativity is. It will also discuss how these machine systems can be useful for our own creative processes. This dissertation will focus on two case studies: the hacker-duo Dadabots who generate raw audio using SampleRNN, and tech start-up Auxuman who create synthetic humans who are capable of generating music and lyrics through artificial neural networks. Through evaluating these case studies, it will be argued that current definitions of creativity in music composition are not broad enough. The findings from evaluating Dadabots’ work will firstly demonstrate that our assumptions about musical creativity in both humans and machines revolve too strongly around symbolic models. Secondly, the findings will suggest that what Boden describes as ‘transformational creativity’ can take place through unexpected machine consequences.1 The chapter on Auxuman will focus on the significance of musical meaning to the creative process and through assessing Auxuman’s output will argue that meaning is codable, can be an appropriate goal when composing (or generating) music and thus, can be a significant part of musical creativity. 1 Margaret Boden, The Creative Mind: Myths and Mechanisms (London: Routledge, 2004), p. 3 i Acknowledgements I would like to thank Serra and Stream Team for studying by my side nearly every day since October, Composers Collective for letting me talk about AI music so much, and Oscar and my parents for their endless support.
