I enjoy the course and have learnt a lot from it.” – WEA have recently introduced Gillian, Student courses at Hands of Hope in Selby to help people build their confidence. The first course was so popular that all 12 of the participants continued on the follow-on course. After the first course some students, who really struggled with confidence, improved their self-esteem sufficiently to enable them to undertake volunteering roles and paid employment.

The course works by sharing experiences and completing practical exercises in small discussion groups each session. People are encouraged to self- analyse and try new skills between sessions and then give feedback on progress. Weekly observations of self and others are encouraged including talking to others about confidence and how they manage situations to develop techniques to address issues. The tutor’s attention to each individual’s needs enables them to grow, relax and learn.
