This research strives to establish a different perspective for considering nineteenth-century portraiture of Native Americans by situating the works through the framework of materiality and circulation. By applying this approach to a series of portraits of Native Americans with peace medals, my research seeks to define issues of movement and power within the transient, fluctuating space of the nineteenth-century American frontier. To accomplish this, I trace the production and distribution of peace medals within paintings widely viewed at the time, as well as the movement of groups and individuals involved with transporting and receiving the medals. Tracking these objects and their mechanisms of movement within the visual culture of the nineteenth century, indicating not only the thing itself but also its processes of production and movement, reveals a dimension of specificity to pictorial narratives, even as the exhibited artworks promoted generalized ideals regarding Indian policy through their circulation. I follow the peace medals’ logistics of production and transit to underscore issues of value and currency on the American frontier, highlighting the ways in which peace medals and the artwork depicting them participated in narratives of Native displacement. 6 INTRODUCTION Against the rapidly developing nineteenth-century American landscape, transitional objects emerge which move within and between shifting historical narratives. The Indian peace medallion is one such object whose production, distribution, display, function, and reproduction intersect with many histories and interpretations. These objects permeated visual art of the period, as artists sought to depict the Native American, both as a player, albeit on the losing side of westward expansion, and as a complex symbol for the expanding nation in its triumph over wilderness. Employed broadly by the United States government during the nineteenth century, peace medals were dispersed across the continent during negotiations with Native tribes. In this study, I examine the mobility and circulation of peace medals featured in nineteenth-century portraiture of Native Americans through the lens of object-oriented ontology. The method of object-oriented ontology – or, thing theory – has been applied generally within the field of art history to interpret the movement, agency, and interaction of things, rejecting anthropocentrism.1 Jennifer Roberts’ scholarship on the materiality and movement of artwork in Transporting Visions: The Movement of Images in Early America will serve as my primary methodological model.2 By applying this approach to a series of portraits of Native Americans with peace medals, my research seeks to define issues of circulation and value within the transient, fluctuating space of the nineteenth-century American frontier. However, the book suffers from a maddening confusion in chronology. Rhode Island born Charles Bird King studied under Benjamin West in England before settling in the District of Columbia after the War of 1812. A successful portrait paint- er, King met Thomas McKenney, superintendent of Indian trade and later head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Mc- Kenney had already begun “The Archives of the American Indian,” a collection of Indian artifacts, and decided to em- ploy King to add portraits to his archives. In 1822 McKenney commissioned King to portray Pawnee, Oto, Omaha, and other delegates who were in Washington at government request. In the next twenty years King did portraits of at least 143 Indian leaders who visited the capital and often did replicas for himself and for his subjects. Included were such notable figures Petalesharro of the Pawnees, Keokuk and Black Hawk of the Sac and Fox, and Red Jacket of the Senecas.

    Young Portrait Explorers: Sequoyah Learning Objective: Learn about Sequoyah (c. 1770 – 1843), creator of the Cherokee syllabary (symbols used like an alphabet), and practice your writing skills. Portrait Discussion: Look at the portrait of Sequoyah. Spend 30 seconds letting your eyes wander from the top of the painting to the bottom. Objects: Notice the objects in this portrait. Can you spot the following: a feather pen, an inkwell (small jar used to hold ink for writing), a pipe, a medal, and something with writing on it? What clues might these objects provide about Sequoyah’s life? Can you read it the writing Sequoyah presents? Some of the symbols might look familiar, but not all. This is the Cherokee syllabary – the symbols Sequoyah created to form a written version of the Cherokee language. Each symbol represents a sound or syllable. Just like the letters in an alphabet, the symbols can be combined to form words. The Cherokee Nation (a North American Indian people or community) has a rich tradition of storytelling but did not use a written language until the 1800s, when Sequoyah introduced his syllabary. Soon after, Cherokee history, traditions, and laws were put down in writing. Pose: Do you think Sequoyah is sitting or standing? Can you try posing like he does? This bulletin is devoted to images of Native Americans from shortly after the discovery of the New World to the 20th-century artist’s vision of painter Robert Riggs. Within these broad param- eters we present images in woodcuts, engravings, lithographs, photographs, watercolors, and oil paintings. All of the earliest images are generic ideas of what Indians looked like. By the early 18th century images became much more personalized and were generally portraits of individu - als, frequently identifiable. The greatest works of individual portraiture are found in the projects of McKenney and Hall, Catlin, Bodmer, and J. O. Lewis in the fertile period from 1820 to 1850. All the images speak to both how Native Americans looked and how they were seen by the largely European artists who depicted them.     Charles Bird King Blakchawk Makataimehikiakiah 1833 Notice details in the painting to identify the individual: • Clothing (robe over shoulders, jewelry, face paint which signifies his clan membership, and feather headdress. • Indian Peace Medal worn around his neck • Scene (Battle blazing along horizon line, over right shoulder) • Expression on his face (wary determination, set jawline, slightly downturned lips) Background Information: • Soon after the Louisiana Purchase, Blackhawk, among others, signed over their land in present- day Illinois, Wisconsin and Missouri. • By 1831, settlers had flooded the area and the Indians were forced to move west of the Mississippi into lands much smaller than their original holdings. 1 • Black Hawk led a contingent of tribesmen back to Illinois in 1832, attempting to reclaim the land and even partnering with neighboring tribes for support. • This sparked the Black Hawk War, culminating in a disorderly retreat back to whence they came. • He was taken captive by US troops, jailed at Jefferson Barracks, where another artist, George Catlin, encountered him and his crew, and was struck by, “the gigantic and symmetrical figures of most of these warriors, who seemed, as they reclined in native ease and gracefulness… rather like statues from some master hand than like beings of a race whom we had heard characterized as degenerate and debased.
