Italy had taken the lead through an Ernie Brandts own goal but Brandts himself restored parity before Arie Haan struck the Netherlands' winner. • Italy have held the upper hand over the ensuing three decades, during which they have recorded two draws and six wins against the Oranje, including a penalty shoot-out triumph following a goalless semi-final at UEFA EURO 2000™. • Despite playing against ten men from the 34th minute when Gianluca Zambrotta was sent off, the tournament co-hosts paid the price for two missed penalties during normal time. -

Bibliography . 441 . 1960 BY THE time the first ball of the European Championship was finally kicked on a September Sunday afternoon in Moscow, the man whose imagination and hard work made it possible had been dead for almost three years . Henri Delaunay passed away on 9 November 1955 from a terminal illness at the age of 72, never getting to see the culmination of his decades of assiduous work . His son Pierre took over as UEFA general secretary, first as a caretaker, then on a permanent basis . The European Nations’ Cup being stuck in development hell for more than three decades wasn’t just down to the horrors of the Second World War and its aftershocks . Even after the June 1954 formation of UEFA, many of Europe’s footballing powerhouses showed little interest in entering anything that wasn’t the World Cup . But in the wake of Delaunay’s death, his son redoubled his efforts to get the Euros off the starting blocks . The idea had already been floated at the Vienna congress the previous March . As a compromise, it was agreed that that most European of things, a commission, should be set up to examine the idea and run the rule over its workability . At UEFA’s second congress in Lisbon in July 1956, Pierre Delaunay gave it another go . -

Germany are competing in a record sixth final – and aiming to lift the Henri Delaunay trophy for the fourth time after earlier triumphs in 1972, 1980 and 1996. • Joachim Löw's Germany reached the final by defeating Turkey 3-2 in a compelling semi-final contest in Basel on Wednesday. After falling behind to Uğur Boral's 22nd-minute strike, Bastian Schweinsteiger drew Germany level four minutes later. Miroslav Klose's 79th-minute header then sparked a frantic finale in which Semih Şentürk drew Turkey level again before Philipp Lahm's last-minute winner. • Spain followed Germany into the final 24 hours later with a resounding 3-0 victory against Russia in Vienna. Luis Aragonés's men did not look back after Xavi Hernández had volleyed them in front five minutes into the second period, adding further goals through Daniel Güiza (73) and David Silva (82). -

This is their third finals appearance and they will be hoping it proves third time lucky after two previous first-round exits in 1996 and 2004, on both occasions following up an opening draw with two defeats. • Karel Brückner's Czech Republic side qualified as winners of Group D, where they finished two points clear of Germany having won nine and lost just one of 12 qualifying games. They sealed their finals place in memorable fashion on 17 October 2007, beating Germany 3-0 in Munich through goals from Libor Sionko, Marek Matějovský and Jaroslav Plašil. -
