Footballers with Migration Background in the German National Football Team
“It is about the flag on your chest!” Footballers with Migration Background in the German National Football Team. A matter of inclusion? An Explorative Case Study on Nationalism, Integration and National Identity. Oscar Brito Capon Master Thesis in Sociology Department of Sociology and Human Geography Faculty of Social Sciences University of Oslo June 2012 Oscar Brito Capon - Master Thesis in Sociology 2 Oscar Brito Capon - Master Thesis in Sociology Foreword Dear reader, the present research work represents, on one hand, my dearest wish to contribute to the understanding of some of the effects that the exclusionary, ethnocentric notions of nationhood and national belonging – which have characterized much of western European thinking throughout history – have had on individuals who do not fit within the preconceived frames of national unity and belonging with which most Europeans have been operating since the foundation of the nation-state approximately 140 years ago. On the other hand, this research also represents my personal journey to understand better my role as a citizen, a man, a father and a husband, while covered by a given aura of otherness, always reminding me of my permanent foreignness in the country I decided to make my home. In this sense, this has been a personal journey to learn how to cope with my new ascribed identity as an alien (my ‘labelled forehead’) without losing my essence in the process, and without forgetting who I also am and have been. This journey has been long and tough in many forms, for which I would like to thank the help I have received from those who have been accompanying my steps all along. -

Conference 2015 Special
R.A. BOARD VOICEOVER “Conference 2015 Special” Referees’ Association Announcement At meeting of the RA Board on Sunday 5th July 2015 the following were elected: Chairman: Paul Field Vice Chairman: Ian Campbell Treasurer: Eddie McGrath Further announcements will follow during the coming weeks as we continue to structure the RA Board. ************************************************************************************************************************************** THE THOUGHTS OF CHAIRMAN PAUL (Paul Field) I have been a member of the R.A. Board for 5 years during which time I have seen seven different Chairman, a Board of Inquiry regarding the general management of the RA, and we had an office facility which was not fit-for-purpose, The RA has now started to move forward and this is now history but let’s remember one quote which typifies the organisation: Henry Ford said – “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got”. In the case of The R.A., a poor product which is not relevant to majority of the Refereeing family, declining membership and often people being in office for far too long. In my view, The R.A. now has to move forward and there are sound building blocks for the future which are positive steps. We need to remember that our main reason for existence is to provide a platform for on-going training, development, mentoring and mutual support. The thriving LRAs are the ones that concentrate on this, have lively debates, a good social side and little business transacted at meetings. As a collective (individually and LRA’s) we are all responsible! There is an urgent need to change people’s perception of the RA and the quality of the membership experience. -

Coaches FC Barcelona v Manchester United FC: Josep Guardiola v Sir Alex Ferguson for the second time in three seasons. Prior to kick-off at Wembley, ‘Pep’ greets the coach he admires most in a meeting between two coaches with exceptionally high averages in the UEFA Champions League. All-time leader Sir Alex was bringing his total to 176 games in 16 seasons, yet even he was falling marginally short of Pep’s tally of 38 matches in only three campaigns. New UEFA National Team Coefficient Ranking System 20 May 2008
New UEFA National Team Coefficient Ranking System 20 May 2008 New UEFA National Team Coefficient Ranking System 1. Purpose of the UEFA national team coefficient The UEFA national team coefficient is an important tool for ensuring sporting balance and fairness in both the qualifying and final rounds of the UEFA European Football Championship. It is used in particular for the pot allocation for the qualifying draw and the final draw, and it is therefore crucial that the coefficient system reflects the real strength of each team as best as possible. 2. Current UEFA coefficient system The current UEFA coefficient system is generated according to the results achieved in the most recent qualifying competitions for the UEFA European Football Championship and the FIFA World Cup. The total number of points obtained in the qualifying competitions of both of the aforementioned competitions is divided by the number of matches played and the resulting coefficient is used for the rankings. In the case of an association that qualifies automatically for the final round of one of the competitions in question (as host association), the coefficient is calculated on the basis of its results in its most recent qualifying competition. The system has the advantage of offering a good comparison of the team strengths in the qualifying competitions. In addition, it is transparent and simple to calculate. However, the fact that matches played during final tournaments are not taken into account distorts the rankings significantly and does not reflect reality. 3. New proposed UEFA system 3.1. Cornerstones and principles 3.1.1. Matches taken into consideration All national A-team matches played in UEFA EURO and the FIFA World Cup qualifying competitions and final tournaments are taken into consideration. -
