Autor, pravděpodobně příslušník americké armády, ve svém textu prezentuje události z konce okupace velice svérázným stylem: [As the Germans withdrew swiftly to the north, they were harrassed by the resistance. EDES conducted operations in the spirit of the Caeserta Agreement and had some success against the retreating Germans. ELAS, on the other hand seemed to hold back. What little they did against the receding Axis seemed more for the purpose of capturing weapons, ammunition and supplies than inflicting damage on the enemy.

  • General Papagos and the Anglo-Greek Talks of February 1941 by JOHN S
General Papagos and the Anglo-Greek Talks of February 1941 by JOHN S. KOLIOPOULOS The Anglo-Greek talks of February 1941 are one of the most con- troversial issues in the historiography of World War II. The talks were held in Athens to discuss Britain's decision earlier in that month to help Greece against a possible German attack, and to agree on a line of defense which could be reasonably expected to check the enemy ad- vance. In addition to the strength of the forces required to hold the enemy and the allocation of these forces, the representatives of the two 'countries were obliged to take into account two important factors: (a) the attitude of Yugoslavia; and (b) the time factor. In accordance with the agreement reached late on February 22, the British would send to Greece, in addition to their air force units already operating in the country, five squadrons of aircraft and land forces equal to four divisions. The British troops would arrive in three installments, and would be deployed on a line to the west of Salonika, running from northwest to southeast along Mt. Vermion and Mt. Olympus, the "Aliakmon line," as it was called. The Greeks, on the other hand, would provide four additional divisions (thirty-five battalions) from Thrace and eastern Macedonia for the defense of the Aliakmon line, and one division in reserve at Larissa. By the same agreement, Anthony Eden, the British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, undertook to approach Yugoslavia in order to enlist its military cooperation with Britain and Greece.

  • Military Entrepreneurship in the Shadow of the Greek Civil War (1946–1949)
JPR Men of the Gun and Men of the State: Military Entrepreneurship in the Shadow of the Greek Civil War (1946–1949) Spyros Tsoutsoumpis Abstract: The article explores the intersection between paramilitarism, organized crime, and nation-building during the Greek Civil War. Nation-building has been described in terms of a centralized state extending its writ through a process of modernisation of institutions and monopolisation of violence. Accordingly, the presence and contribution of private actors has been a sign of and a contributive factor to state-weakness. This article demonstrates a more nuanced image wherein nation-building was characterised by pervasive accommodations between, and interlacing of, state and non-state violence. This approach problematises divisions between legal (state-sanctioned) and illegal (private) violence in the making of the modern nation state and sheds new light into the complex way in which the ‘men of the gun’ interacted with the ‘men of the state’ in this process, and how these alliances impacted the nation-building process at the local and national levels. Keywords: Greece, Civil War, Paramilitaries, Organized Crime, Nation-Building Introduction n March 1945, Theodoros Sarantis, the head of the army’s intelligence bureau (A2) in north-western Greece had a clandestine meeting with Zois Padazis, a brigand-chief who operated in this area. Sarantis asked Padazis’s help in ‘cleansing’ the border area from I‘unwanted’ elements: leftists, trade-unionists, and local Muslims. In exchange he promised to provide him with political cover for his illegal activities.1 This relationship that extended well into the 1950s was often contentious.

  • John S. Koliopoulos Unwanted Ally: Greece and the Great
JOHN S. KOLIOPOULOS UNWANTED ALLY: GREECE AND THE GREAT POWERS, 1939-1941 Greece’s international position and national security, from the spring of 1939 when the Axis powers initiated a policy of outright conquest in Europe until the German invasion of the country two years later, have, until recently, been examined mainly from the point of view of contemporary official Greek policy, leading thus to the development of a semi - official Greek historiography1. Most of the governing as sumptions and premises of this historiography grew out of both war time rhetoric and the post - war requirements of Greek policy, to be come in time axiomatic. Some of these assumptions and premises are: a) that Greece followed, before the' Italian attack, a neutral policy towards the great European powers; b) that the Italian attack was unprovoked ; c ) that Anglo - Greek cooperation was subsequent — and consequent — to the Italian attack ; d ) that the Greek Government, although resolved to resist a German attack, did everything to avoid it, and e) that the German invasion was unprovoked and undertaken to rescue the defeated Italians in Albania. In this paper I propose to examine these assumptions in the light of evidence newly made avail able, and see particularly whether Greece followed a really neutral policy until the Italian attack, and whether the Greco - Italian war was, until Germany decided to intervene and extinguish the poten tially dangerous conflict in the Balkans, more than a local war loosely connected with the strategical interests of Britain and Germany. Greece’s foreign relations before World War II were first put to the test in April 1939, on the occasion of the Italian occupation of Al bania.

  • Greece During the Second World War
GREECE DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR It is indeed an unusual experience for an ancient historian to lecture on a theme of contemporary history. The experience is doubtless valuable for the ancient historian. Its value for contemporary historY may be most charitably regarded as indeterminate. Historians present will, I am sure, agree that the profession is beset with obstacles, frustrations and difficulties. But there is one difficulty which the ancient historian can assume he will not encounter; that is, to have his assertions challenged by eyewitnesses to the actual events. In this room there are indeed such eyewitnesses. Among them are Professor William H. McNeill, who wrote the first good and responsible book on Greece during the Second War,1 and Professor D.George Kousoulas, whose really admi rable historY of the Greek Communist partY is of a significance far exceeding the specifically Greek context.2 To both these scholars this lecture is greatly indebted. Those familiar with this period of Greek historY are aware of its fantastic complexity. This complexity explains the over-simplified and dogma tic character of what follows. The First World War was ignited by an incident in the Balkans. The Second World War was not. Throughout the difficult and increasingly dangerous years from 1918 to 1939 the Balkan nations, both victors and vanquished, faced extraordinary difficulties — the acquisition of new territories or the loss of old, the problems of minorities and exchanges of population, industri al and technological backwardness, the legacy of centuries of Ottoman rule, with the resulting economic difficulties which in turn produced increasing social unrest.

  • The Establishment and Development of the Metaxas Dictatorship in the Context of Fascism and Nazism, 1936–41
23tmp09a.qxd 04/04/2002 14:43 Page 143 9 The Establishment and Development of the Metaxas Dictatorship in the Context of Fascism and Nazism, 193641 MOGENS PELT In October 1935, Italy launched a fully-fledged attack on Abyssinia, threatening Britains position in Egypt and the supremacy of the Royal Navy in the eastern Mediterranean. Three years later, in 1938, Germany established her dominance over Central Europe in a series of short-of-war operations, incorporating Austria and the Sudetenland into the Reich by Anschluss and the Munich agreement. The dismemberment of Czechoslovakia dealt a fatal blow to the French security system in south-eastern Europe, la petite entente with Prague serving as its regional power centre. While the credibility of France as a great power almost completely eroded overnight, Vienna and Prague suddenly provided ready-made platforms to an invigorated and resurgent Germany to project her power into south- eastern Europe, and to rearrange that area in line with Berlins plans for a new European Order. This, in turn, gave a boost to national vindication in the revisionist states, Bulgaria and Hungary, while it generated shock waves of national insecurity and internal instability in the status quo states, Greece, Romania and Yugoslavia. On 10 October 1935, only a week after the beginning of Mussolinis African enterprise, a military coup détat in Greece reinstated the monarchy, which had been abolished in the wake of the First World War, and some ten months later, on 4 August 1936, King George II established what was meant to be a permanent dictatorship under the leadership of General Ioannis Metaxas, a prominent royalist.

Its contribution to the historiography of the period stems from the fact that it constitutes the first academic study of the third largest resistance organisation in Greece, the 5/42 regiment of evzones. The study of this national resistance organisation can thus extend our knowledge of the Greek resistance effort, the political relations between the main resistance groups, the conditions that led to the civil war and the domestic relevance of British policies.

Received: 25 July 2019; Accepted: 14 August 2019; Published: 16 August 2019 Abstract: The convention for the safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) by UNESCO highlights the equal importance of intangible elements of cultural heritage to tangible ones. One of the most important domains of ICH is folkloric dances. A dance choreography is a time-varying 3D process (4D modelling), which includes dynamic co-interactions among different actors, emotional and style attributes, and supplementary elements, such as music tempo and costumes. Presently, research focuses on the use of depth acquisition sensors, to handle kinesiology issues. The extraction of skeleton data, in real time, contains a significant amount of information (data and metadata), allowing for various choreography-based analytics. In this paper, a trajectory interpretation method for Greek folkloric dances is presented. We focus on matching trajectories’ patterns, existing in a choreographic database, to new ones originating from different sensor types such as VICON and Kinect II. Then, a Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) algorithm is proposed to find out similarities/dissimilarities among the choreographic trajectories.

London Gazette 10 May 1945: ‘In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in the field.’ 64th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery was deployed to Greece in late 1944. At this time German forces had been defeated in Greece and 64th Regiment had been converted to infantry as the need for anti Aircraft units had been greatly reduced in that theatre of operations. The aim of this was so that units like the 64th would take over the roles of guarding POW’s, policing work etc, freeing up regular Infantry troops. However with the German forces being pushed out of the country, their was a political vacuum, in which Greek partisan, Communist and loyalist forces vied for power, with the British being heavily involved. As such, many of the units that had been deployed as secondary troops, ended up in the middle of a brutal couple of months of fighting. Gunner Hulmes, who’s unit was based in Athens, would have been involved in the heavy fighting against ELAS forces and it was for his gallantry during this time that he was Awarded the Military Medal. Among other fighting, men from the 64th regiment, along with forces from the Greek Brigade were involved in the defence of Averoff Prison when it was assaulted.
