Overview This project has been gestating since Cecilia Maria O’Conway (1788-1865) arrived in Baltimore to join Elizabeth Bayley Seton, 7 December 1808, and the fact was recorded for posterity. Concerted efforts have been underway since 1996 to identify, review, and transcribe manuscript personnel records, but staff time and funding were not available to digitalize, integrate, and analyze the information. In 2000 the archival team of the Daughters of Charity Archives located at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Emmitsburg, Maryland, USA, concluded that there were at least four types of primary sources for data related to the first one hundred years of the sisterhood.

    Volume 23, Issue 4 — December 12, 2018 Your witness is alsoDec importantember 12to ,your 2018 bishop Feast and of his Our presbyterate Lady of as Guadalupe they seek renewal in their response To the Members of the United States Association of Consecrated Virgins, At the recent gathering of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops most of our conversation was about the abuse crisis and the failure of the bishops to act or to hold one another accountable. The candor among the bishops was quite amazing and healthy. When I have explained the situation to folks in the diocese, I often phrase it this way, in three categories. First of all, regarding the abuse of minors the dioceses have done a good job of creating the 2002 Charter and all that followed from that, such that our environments are quite safe. The vast majority of reports coming after 2002, including the Pennsylvania report, deal with matters which happened prior to 2002. That does not mean that there will not be sin in the future, but our safe environments have hopefully reduced that possibility greatly. Now the graphic descriptions of what happened prior to 2002 are awful as is any abuse of a minor and the wounds in the lives of those folks are permanent, especially the spiritual wounds. Secondly, we have the Archbishop McCarrick situation. Bishops were not included in the 2002 Charter, as I understand it, due to an intervention by Rome, since Bishops could only be corrected or removed by Rome. The USCCB meeting was meant to address that situation, but as you Inside this Issue Page know, decisions regarding those documents have been delayed until after the February meeting in Rome with the Something Ancient- Pope and the presidents of the various Conferences of Something New 2 Bishops from around the world.

    OUR LADY OF CHARITY Knights of Columbus Marian Prayer Program MESSAGE FROM THE SUPREME KNIGHT Dear Brother Knights and Friends: Devotion to Our Lady of Charity dates to the early 1600s, when a statue of the Blessed Mother holding the Christ Child was found in Cuban waters by three young men. As the story has been passed down, the three were rowing in search of salt to preserve meat for the copper miners of El Cobre. Halfway across the bay, the young men sought shelter from a storm and encamped for the night. In the morning, they saw a white bundle floating toward them. It was a statue attached to a board that was inscribed with the words: “I am the Virgin of Charity” (“Yo soy la Virgen de la Caridad”). A shrine was erected in her honor and devotion to Our Lady of Charity spread throughout Cuba. Our Lady of Charity now comes to Knights of Columbus everywhere as we turn to her maternal intercession in our new Marian Prayer Program. Although the Virgin of Charity has her origins in Cuba, devotion to her is altogether appropriate for the Knights of Columbus due to our first principle of charity. Our prayer program also gives us an opportunity to pray in solidarity with Pope Benedict XVI, whose first encyclical, Deus Caritas Est, was dedicated to the theme of charity. During each prayer service we will remember in a special way the pope and his worldwide ministry as the Vicar of Christ and shepherd of the Universal Church. At the conclusion of the yearlong prayer program, a “spiritual bouquet” will be presented to the pope, including a report on the total number of prayer services that were held and the approximate number of participants.

    1 Mission STATEMENT Carl Koch’s belief that he was “just a steward of the finances given by God to use on His behalf” inspired the commitment he and his wife, Paula, made to founding the Koch Foundation in 1979. The Foundation’s goals are to strengthen and to propagate the Roman Catholic faith by providing grant support for a wide variety of evangelization efforts. In considering applications, major emphasis is placed on sound but financially needy evangelical programs. The Koch Foundation is international in scope with no geographical preference. Carl & Paula Koch 2 Letter from the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR As a child attending Catholic Schools I was always taught that angels were all around us as our unseen protectors. I still remember my third grade teacher Sister Peter Favor telling my classmate that we were going to wear out our guardian angels who were working overtime to keep us out of trouble. In religious education we often read stories of angels sent to do God’s will such as the angel sent to keep Abraham from sacrificing Isaac to, the Archangel Gabriel announcing the birth of John the Baptist and the birth of Jesus. Angels have two purposes, to worship God and through all eternity and to assist us during our life so that when we die we join them in heaven to praise God. We are told that there are nine choirs of angels: the thrones are angels of pure humility, peace and submission. They reside in the area of the cosmos where material form begins to take shape.

    Koch Foundation 2011 Annual Report

    Mission Statement Carl Koch’s belief that he was “just a steward of the fi nances given by God to use on His behalf” inspired the commitment he and his wife, Paula, made to founding the Koch Foundation in 1979. The Foundation’s goals are to strengthen and to propagate the Roman Catholic faith by providing grant support for a wide variety of evangelization eff orts. In considering applications, major emphasis is placed on sound but fi nancially needy evangelical programs. The Koch Foundation is international in scope with no geographical preference. Carl and Paula Koch 2 Letter From The Executive Director I have been blessed in my life to have had several family members who chose to dedicate their lives in service to God, so there has never been a time when I did not visit my relatives and see a cousin dressed all in black with a worn yet beloved Rosary tucked carefully into her simple belt. I can remember as a young child Sister teaching me to say the Rosary and telling me that whenever I attended Mass I was to pray the Rosary. That memory has stayed with me into adulthood and, when I became a mother, the Rosary took on a special and personal meaning. I found I was praying the Rosary more often and usually for something concerning my son and family. I began to realize that I needed the solace I could only fi nd by praying the Rosary. Like many parents, in addition to my work at the Foundation I am also my son’s chauff eur, carting him to and from various sports events.
