Experiencing puppet characters is related to understanding puppet show stories. Heri Dono reaffirms his belief that art is not separated from culture. Underlying his art making, he feels the need to develop the sensitivity to listen to the sounds and music, the sensitivity to motion and the sensitivity of telling. Heri Dono created two series of Legend Puppet: in 1988 "Si Tungkot Tunggal Panaluan" based on the legend of Batak society of North Sumatra and in 1992 "Momotaro" which raised the legend of Japanese society. The exhibit will open at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, and will continue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 4, and Sunday, May 5. Included in the batik collection will be several framed examples completed in the folk tradition of central Java by a noted batik artist, Aziz. But in the decade immediately after Indonesian independence was fully attained, the tourist industry had to be rebuilt and a variety of strategies for attracting foreigners attempted. The rebuilding of the industry was accomplished in a surprisingly modern manner, in ways that have been forgotten in subsequent accounts of the industry. In the period 1946-1949, an aptly named Dutch economic official, G. Koopman, had sought to re-establish tourism in Bali as part of the Dutch attempt to restore their empire to its pre-War state; between 1950 and 1965 Indonesians began to focus on re-establishing tourism for themselves, by pro- ducing tour guides and setting up specific organizations to take advantage of increasing numbers of foreigners. The word batik is thought to be derived from the word „ambatik‟ which translated means „a cloth with little dots‟. The suffix „tik‟ means little dot, drop, point or to make dots. Batik may also originate from the Javanese word „tritik” which describes a resist process for dying where the patterns are reserved on the textiles by tying and sewing areas prior to dying, similar to tie dye techniques.

While it is possible to have a culture that didn’t have any form of visual art, every culture produces art. The simplest cultures have stories and myths they pass down through the generations. A society cannot have art without culture. This is true since art is an expression of a culture. When an artist paints a picture or writes a poem they do so using forms that are culturally defined, images and language are used in ways that people in that culture understand. It is often difficult for someone from a culture that varies greatly from another to understand the art from that other culture. They may find it may be interesting or beautiful but they will not understand it the way someone from that culture will. This can also be seen through how art changes when one culture assimilates features from other cultures. This gives a backdrop to the development of Martial Arts. The word martial comes from the Roman god of war, Mars. As such, a martial art is an art form that relates directly to war. This art form began as a simple need to protect oneself, family, tribe and nation (Kostynick, 1989).

    Javanese batik from craft to art Thienny Lee Batik, which is decorated textile made with wax resist technique, became a major form of creative expression in the Malay world in southeast Asia. Woven textiles throughout southeast Asia are by any standard impressive, but usually the patterns are limited to repeated ornaments and stripes, largely due to the difficulty of weaving detailed and irregular ornamental compositions into cloth. Dyed batik however provides near limitless design potential, within the confines of the fine lines that can be drawn with a canting, a tool comprising a bamboo handle attached to a copper vessel and spout containing hot liquid wax. The invention of this unique implement, the canting, has led to the art of batik reaching its zenith in Java. We do not know exactly how old this ancient technique is, as only patchy evidence is available, but batik was first mentioned in 17th century Dutch sources referring “to a shipload of fabrics decorated with colourful patterns”. 1 The batik created using canting is called ‘batik tulis’. Tulis means ‘to write’ in present day Indonesian and Malay language, clearly referring to how the canting functions like a fountain pen used to write or to draw. The design possibilities of batik tulis drawn with a canting are infinite and the array of patterns that have been developed to date provides a magnificent collection of batik designs of great beauty. It is therefore not surprising that by the mid 20th century, the artistic freedom of batik technique using canting was being explored as a popular medium for contemporary art in Indonesia.
