(2021) The erasure of Kwakwaka'wakw First Nations' rich culture and history has transpired for hundreds of years. This destruction of heritage has caused severe damage to traditional oral storytelling and the history and knowledge interwoven with this ancient practice. Under the guidance of Northwest Coast artist and author David Neel, we worked towards reintroducing this storytelling tradition to contemporary audiences through modern media and digital technologies. -

A Fricative-First Path from Proto-Salish *c to /s/ and /θ/ in Central Salish* Gloria Mellesmoen University of British Columbia Abstract: Proto-Salish (PS) *c has developed into /θ/ and /s/ in certain dialects of Central Salish languages. This paper proposes a fricative-first trajectory of change from PS *c to /θ/ and /s/ in Pentlatch, Comox-Sliammon, Northern Straits, and Halkomelem. The fricative-first path is motivated by impressionistic descriptions of ambiguity and variation in the pronunciation and distribution of the reflexes of PS *c. The fricative-first trajectory is better able to account for the patterns in Central Salish as a whole than the fronting-first one Thompson, Thompson, and Efrat (1974) propose for Saanich. Keywords: fricatives, sound change, Pentlatch, Comox-Sliammon, Halkomelem, Northern Straits 1 Introduction The interdental fricative /θ/ is not only cross-linguistically rare (Maddieson 1984:45), but is also a shared innovation across several Coast Salish languages. Kuipers (2002) proposes that Proto- Salish (PS) *c developed into either /s/ or /θ/ across Central Salish languages, while PS *s remained /s/ (Kuipers 2002). The progression of this change from alveolar affricate to (alveolar or interdental) fricative, as well as the factors mediating its actuation, have not been explored in detail. Impressionistic descriptions of these languages suggest articulatory similarity and perceptual ambiguity between /θ/ and /s/. This is documented for Halkomelem (Suttles 2004), Northern Straits (Thompson, Thompson, & Efrat 1974), and Comox-Sliammon (Blake 2000). Reports of ambiguity and similarity, coupled with the fact that a phonemic contrast has been lost between PS *c and *s in a handful of the dialects, suggest that synchronic and diachronic instability surround reflexes of PS *c. -

Contact and change in Central Salish words for salmon* Ethan Pincott Simon Fraser University Abstract: Within comparative Salish linguistics, the problems of frequent irregular sound correspondences and overlapping lexical isoglosses are well known. In this paper, the possible effects of contact on lexical change within the Central Salish branch are examined, focusing on the semantic domain of words for salmon. This builds on previous work by Thom Hess, Donna Gerdts, Aert Kuipers, and others, studying lexical diffusion within the Salish family. All cognate sets shared by two or more languages are listed, and comments on phonological form and meaning are given. The geographic distribution and phonological irregularity of certain sets imply a mechanism of diffusion which has likely been ongoing for most of Central Salish history, and suggest that alternatives to the traditional tree model are required to account for these processes of change. Keywords: Central Salish, historical linguistics, language contact, irregularity, diffusion 1 Introduction The goal of this paper is to examine the words for salmon in the Central Salish family to see what patterns they show in their distribution. Salmon was the most important food resource for Central Salish speaking peoples, and likely has been for millennia (Donald, 2003:296). All five species of Pacific salmon spawn in streams within Central Salish territory, but they are not evenly distributed throughout this area. During the spawning season, people would travel long distances to fish in the most productive streams, possibly providing an opportunity for contact between speakers of different dialects or languages (Suttles, 1990:457). Because of these cultural and historical factors, names for salmon provide a potentially interesting domain for the study of lexical change within Central Salish. -

A total of three hundred two (302) place-names are known to these people today, in their Coast Salish language. Each of these names is trans• cribed in a practical writing system, corresponding to the pronunciation of the Indian words by some of the thirteen elderly Island Halkomelem people who collaborated on this study. For each geographical name, information regarding its traditional and present utilization by the Indians is given. -

5 Integrating Approaches to Diversity: Argument Structure on the NW Coast MARIANNE MITHUN 1 Introduction Among the central concerns of linguistics are discovering which characteris- tics are shared by all languages, how languages can differ, and why individ- ual languages take the particular shapes they do. Such issues can be ap- proached from a variety of directions. General linguistic theory can orient us to the kinds of categories and structures to investigate and suggest generali- zations over the patterns observed. Typological work can identify possible ranges of structural variation across languages and recurring correlations among features. Historical linguistics can untangle processes by which grammatical structures come into being. Work on language contact can re- veal ways in which structural features can spread across genetic boundaries. Each of these lines of work, as well as others, has contributed to our under- standing of similarities and differences among languages. Certain patterns, however, remain intractable when considered from any one approach alone. Here we shall examine parallels in grammatical structure that can be ex- plained only when multiple approaches are combined. The structure to be examined is among the most commonly cited in ty- pological characterizations of individual languages: the expression of core argument categories. In an ambitious survey of basic structural features in 174 languages, Nichols (1992:65-6, 181) lists six types of argument struc- ture, for which she adopts the term ‘alignment’ from Relational Grammar. Syntax of the World’s Languages III Free University of Berlin, September 25-28, 2008 organized by: Ekkehard König Volker Gast Florian Haas Abstracts Gontzal Aldai Motivations for final position and for enclitic position: On the placing of the inflected verb in historical Basque Modern Basque (and historical Basque as a whole; generalized attestations start in the 16th century) is a XXIV-type language in Greenberg’s (1966) classification; that is, a non-rigid SOV language with Gen-N order and postpositions, but with N-Adj order. In the present work, I examine the position of the inflected verb in the simplex clauses of historical Basque, from the perspective of the motivations that may play a role in it. Probably the most important generalization here is that, in the historical period, the simplex clause of Basque has always had a rather free word order. However, two major motivations show up which seem to account for a competition in the position of the inflected verb. On the one hand, there is a motivation for placing the inflected verb in final position (or at least after all the major constituents of the clause). On the other hand, there is another motivation which tends to place the inflected verb enclitic to a focal host. These two major motivations are not always in conflict: the focal host can appear in second-to-last position, thus fulfilling both motivations at the same time. Only when the focal host that attracts the inflected verb appears in an early position (particularly in initial position) do we have a competition between motivations.
