[email protected] Abstract. Hummingbirds are one of the most diverse families of birds and the phylogenetic relationships within the group have recently begun to be studied with molecular data. Most of these studies have focused on the higher level classification within the family, and now it is necessary to study the relationships between and within genera using a similar approach. Here, we investigated the taxonomic status of the genus Hylocharis, a member of the Emeralds complex, whose relationships with other genera are unclear; we also investigated the existence of the Basilinna genus. We obtained sequences of mitochondrial (ND2: 537 bp) and nuclear genes (AK-5 intron: 535 bp, and c-mos: 572 bp) for 6 of the 8 currently recognized species and outgroups. -

TANAGER-FINCH Oreothraupis arremonops V/R10 This cloud-forest undergrowth species has a poorly known and patchy distribution in the West Andes of Colombia and in north-western Ecuador, with few recent records. However, large tracts of apparently suitable habitat remain in protected areas, the reason for its apparent rarity being essentially unknown. DISTRIBUTION The Tanager-finch (see Remarks 1) is known from just a few apparently disjunct areas on the West Andes in Antioquia, Valle, Cauca and Nariño departments, Colombia, and also from Imbabura and Pichincha provinces, north-western Ecuador, where localities (coordinates from Paynter and Traylor 1977, 1981) are as follows: Colombia (Antioquia) Hacienda Potreros (c.6°39’N 76°09’W; on the western slope of the West Andes, south-west of Frontino), where a male (in USNM) was taken at 1,980 m in June 1950 (also Carriker 1959); (Valle) in the region of Alto Anchicayá (c.3°37’N 76°53’W), where the species has fairly recently been recorded (Orejuela 1983); (Cauca) in the vicinity of Cerro Munchique (2°32’N 76°57’W), where the bird is regularly found on the western slope (Hilty and Brown 1986), specific localities including: La Costa (untraced, but c.10 km north of Cerro Munchique), where a female (in ANSP) was taken at 1,830 m in March 1938 (also Meyer de Schauensee 1948-1952), Cocal (2°31’N 77°00’W; north-west of Cerro Munchique), where two specimens were collected at 1,830 m (Chapman 1917a), El Tambo (2°25’N 76°49’W; on the east slope of the West Andes), whence come specimens taken at 1,370 -

We present the bird collection catalogue of the world fauna from the patrimony of the Zoological Museum of Cluj (founded in 1859). The studied collection includes 221 specimens belonging to 172 species, 59 families, 18 orders. Especially, we mention a small hummingbird collection made of 45 specimens, 38 species; some endemic species, three from Brazil (Malacoptila striata, Hemithraupis ruficapilla, Paroaria dominicana) and Apteryx oweni (New Zealand). Also, the collection includes other distinguished species as: Goura victoriae, Argusianus argus grayi, Tragopan melanocephalus, Lophophorus impejanus. Keywords: catalogue, collection, exotic bird, museum, Cluj (Romania). Rezumat. Colecia de psri exotice a Muzeului Zoologic (Universitatea Babe-Bolyai) din Cluj (România). Prezentm catalogul coleciei de psri din fauna mondial din patrimoniul Muzeului de Zoologie din Cluj (infiinat în 1859). Colecia studiat; cuprinde 221 de exemplare încadrate în 172 de specii, 59 de familii, 18 ordine. Remarcm în mod deosebit o mic colecie de colibri alctuit din 45 de exemplare, 38 de specii; câteva endemite, trei din Brazilia (Malacoptila striata, Hemithraupis ruficapilla, Paroaria dominicana) i Apteryx oweni (Noua Zeeland). Brazil's Eastern Amazonia
The loud and impressive White Bellbird, one of the many highlights on the Brazil’s Eastern Amazonia 2017 tour (Eduardo Patrial) BRAZIL’S EASTERN AMAZONIA 8/16 – 26 AUGUST 2017 LEADER: EDUARDO PATRIAL This second edition of Brazil’s Eastern Amazonia was absolutely a phenomenal trip with over five hundred species recorded (514). Some adjustments happily facilitated the logistics (internal flights) a bit and we also could explore some areas around Belem this time, providing some extra good birds to our list. Our time at Amazonia National Park was good and we managed to get most of the important targets, despite the quite low bird activity noticed along the trails when we were there. Carajas National Forest on the other hand was very busy and produced an overwhelming cast of fine birds (and a Giant Armadillo!). Caxias in the end came again as good as it gets, and this time with the novelty of visiting a new site, Campo Maior, a place that reminds the lowlands from Pantanal. On this amazing tour we had the chance to enjoy the special avifauna from two important interfluvium in the Brazilian Amazon, the Madeira – Tapajos and Xingu – Tocantins; and also the specialties from a poorly covered corner in the Northeast region at Maranhão and Piauí states. Cotinga 17 Notes on Chestnut-bellied Hum m ingbird Amazilia castaneiventris : a new record for Boyacá, Colom bia Bernabé López-Lanús Cotinga 17 (2002): 51- 52 Amazilia castaneiventris es una especie endémica de Colombia, amenazada de peligro de extinción, de la vertiente oeste del norte de la Cordillera Oriental y Serranía de San Lucas. Su hábitat al parecer es de arbustales y bordes de bosques en zonas semiáridas, lo cual se comprueba con la identificación de un ejemplar en Villa de Leyva, departamento de Boyacá, situada en una región semiárida. El individuo compartía el hábitat con Amazilia tzacatl. Villa de Leyva se encuentra a c. 120 km de la localidad más al sur conocida para la especie, en el mismo altiplano boyacense. Este hábitat en términos generales no se encuentra amenazado, por lo cual la especie podría ser tanto localizada como desapercibida por falta de observaciones. Introduction tzacatl. Portachuelo Pass is an important route for migratory birds between northern South America and the Southern Cone. During 11 months of sampling between 2010 and 2012, we captured 1,460 birds belonging to 125 identified species, 29 families, and 9 orders. The families with the highest relative abundance and species richness were Trochilidae and Thraupidae and the most common species were the Violet-chested Hummingbird (Sternoclyta cyanopectus), Olive-striped Flycatcher (Mionectes olivaceus), Plain-brown Woodcreeper (Dendrocincla fuliginosa), Orange-bellied Euphonia (Euphonia xanthogaster), Violet-fronted Brilliant (Heliodoxa leadbeateri), Vaux’s Swift (Chaetura vauxi), Red-eared Parakeet (Pyrrhura hoematotis), Golden-tailed Sapphire (Chrysuronia oenone), Black-hooded Thrush (Turdus olivater), and Gray-rumped Swift (Chaetura cinereiventris). These species represented 52.4% of total captures and 8.0% of identified species. We captured 5 endemic species and 8 migratory species. The months of greatest relative abundance and species richness were June and July 2010 and January 2011. Birds captured belonged to the following feeding guilds: insectivorous, nectarivorous-insectivorous, frugivorous, frugivorous-insectivorous, granivorous, frugivorous-folivorous, omnivorous, carnivorous, and frugivorous-graniv- orous. -

But no two trips are ever exactly alike, and, as is always the case, the relative success of this tour in any given year, at least as measured in total species count and number of endemics seen, comes down to weather. And as we all know, the weather isn’t what it used to be, anywhere! We actually experienced pretty typical amounts of rain this year, and although it no doubt affected our birding success to some extent, its overall impact was relatively minimal. Nonetheless, we tallied 410 species , a whopping 150 of which were regional and/or Brazilian endemics! These figures become all the more impressive when you consider that 47 of the wider ranging species not included as “endemics” in the preceding tallies are represented in southeast Brazil by distinctive subspecies endemic to the Atlantic Forest region, and that at least 15–20 of these subspecies that we recorded during our tour are likely to be elevated to separate species status in the near future. We convened in mid-morning at the hotel in São Paulo and then launched into the five- hour drive to Intervales State Park, my own personal favorite among the many great spots in southeast Brazil.
