McLean, former Curator of Malacology at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is provided. It is complemented with a full bibliography and list of 344 taxa named by him and co-authors (with type information and current status), as well as 40 patronyms. Biography James Hamilton McLean was born in Detroit, Michigan, on June 17, 1936. The McLean family moved to Dobbs Ferry, New York, on the Hudson River in 1940, a short train ride and subway ride away from the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). His brother Hugh recalled that, “AMNH became the place of choice to go to whenever we could get someone to take us. Those visits opened our eyes to the variety and possibilities of what was out there, waiting for us to discover and collect.” From an early age James seemed destined to have a career at a museum (Figs 1–2). -

V- > • Fairbanks, Alaska December, 197 9 Abstract This studv presents information on the tnxonomv and distribution of the marine prosobranch gastropod and bivalve mollusks from the waters surrounding Alaska. Three hundred fifty-two species of prosobranch gastropods and 202 species of bivalves are reported from these waters. Over 3,000 lots of specimens, representing 330 species and literature sources form the basis of this study. References, synonymy, geographic and bathymetric ranges are provided for each species. Characteristics used to identify the species of 66 genera are presented in tabular form. The greatest number of species is reported from the southern Bering Sea, <-ite fewest from the Beaufort Sea. Most of the species have wide ranges in the eastern or western Pacific. New collecting records reported here extend the known ranges of 27 species. Eight species were previously unknown from Alaskan waters. -

[email protected] Seashore animals of Southeastern Alaska By Aaron Baldwin Introduction Southeast Alaska (the “Alaskan Panhandle”) is an ecologically diverse region that extends from Yakutat to Dixon Entrance south of Prince of Wales Island. A complex of several hundred islands, fjords, channels, and bays, SE Alaska has over 3,000 miles of coastline. Most people who live or visit Southeast Alaska have some idea of the incredible diversity of nature found here. From mountain tops to the cold, dark depths of our many fjords, life is everywhere. The marine life of SE Alaska is exceptionally diverse for several reasons. One is simply the amount of coast, over twice the amount of the coastline of Washington, Oregon, and California combined! Within this enormous coastline there is an incredible variety of habitats, each with their own ecological community. Another reason for SE Alaska’s marine diversity is that we are in an overlap zone between two major faunal provinces. These provinces are defined as large areas that contain a similar assemblage of animals. From northern California to SE Alaska is a faunal province called the Oregonian Province. From the Aleutian Island chain to SE Alaska is the Aleutian Province. What this means is that while our sea life is generally similar to that seen in British Columbia and Washington state, we also have a great number of northern species present. Numerous important studies on seaweed communities including these phytal animals have been so far carried out mainly in European seas from various biological view-points by many authors (Colman, 1940; Dahl, 1948; Wieser, 1952; Chapman, 1955; Ohm, 1964; Hagerman, 1966; Nagle, 1968; and other authors). On the other hand, in Japan, seaweed communities were studied mainly in the Zostera and the Sargassum regions by Kitamori and Kobayashi (1958), Kitamori et al. (1959), Kikuchi (1961, 1962 and 1966), Fuse (1962a and b), Harada (1962) and others mainly from the view-point of fishery resources, especially for the relation between fishes and phytal animals as their food organisms. In these studies, however, most meio- or microorganisms, such as harpacticoids, nematodes, etc., were omitted or disregarded despite of their predominant existence in these communities. Therefore, Mukai (1971) recently made a quantitative investigation of phytal animals including meiofauna in the Sargassum region in the Inland Sea of Japan and described their seasonal fluctuations of abundance. -

Aceptado el 8-X-1996 RESUMEN El estudio del material obtenido durante dos expediciones realizadas a las Islas de São Tomé y Príncipe en los años 1989 y 1990, ha proporcionado una nueva especie de tró- quido con apariencia de Solariella, que por sus características morfológicas y radulares pertenece a la subfamilia Lirulariinae. Se describe esta especie, nueva para la ciencia, comentándose las características morfológicas de la concha, partes blandas y rádula, e incluyéndola en el género Lirularia. Se discute la inclusión en dicho género de otras dos especies de la costa occidental africana. ABSTRACT The study of the material obtained in São Tomé and Principe Islands during two expedi- tions in the years 1989 and 1990, have yielded a new trochid species with Solariella, which for its morphological and radular characters belongs to the subfamily Lirulariinae. This species is described as new for science within the genus Lirularia and its morphologi- cal characteristics of shell, soft parts and radula are commented on. I predicted that differences in the meiofaunal diversity, abundance, and community composition would be influenced by the morphological complexity and palatability of an alga. I found that the algal structural palatability, rather than chemical palatability, was a factor in the preferences of one genus of meiofauna (Lacuna sp.). The results also suggest that the level of structural complexity of an alga determines its relative abundance of meiofauna, while the type of structural complexity determines its meiofaunal community composition. Even though Sargassum did not support a lower diversity of meiofauna compared to each individual native species, a monoculture of Sargassum would support a less diverse community of meiofauna compared to a diverse community of native seaweeds. INTRODUCTION An invasive species is an introduced species that threatens native diversity. An invasive species negatively impacts a community by dominating space, altering habitat structure, and/or changing biodiversity (Schaffelke and Hewitt 2007). The brown alga Sargassum muticum is considered one of the most invasive seaweeds in temperate ecosystems (Wiencke and Bischof 2012). -
