Valencia Interview Date: circa March 1962 2 Abstract: In this eight-part oral history, fighter ace Frederick Libby is interviewed about his life and his military service with the Royal Flying Corps during World War I. In part four, he discusses his time as an observer and pilot with various squadrons in France. Topics discussed include his thoughts on German and British pilots, military life in France and England, and mission logistics for squadrons. The interview is conducted by fellow fighter ace Eugene A. Valencia. Biography: Frederick Libby was born in the early 1890s in Sterling, Colorado. He worked as an itinerant cowboy during his youth and joined the Canadian Army shortly after the outbreak of World War I. Deployed to France in 1915, Libby initially served with a motor transport unit, then volunteered for the Royal Flying Corps. He served as an observer with No. 23 Squadron and No. 11 Squadron, then as a pilot with No. 43 Squadron and No. 25 Squadron. Scoring a number of aerial victories during his RFC career, he became the first American fighter ace. Libby transferred to the United States Army Air Service in 1917 and was medically discharged soon after for spondylitis. As a civilian, he went on to embark on a number of business ventures, including founding the Eastern Oil Company and Western Air Express. Libby passed away in 1970. 8493 Fokker F.I 1/48 intro The designation Fokker F.I was carried in the summer of 1917 by the first three triplane fighter prototypes designed by Reinhold Platz, but known better under the designation Fokker Dr.I. The aircraft came about as a quick response to the allied Sopwith Triplane which appeared above the front in April 1917 and bettered all current German fighters at the time. The F.I differed from the later Dr.I in the shape of the stabilisers including the elevators, as well as in having a smaller aileron area. There also were no bottom wingtip skids that were found later, these aiding in overturn prevention since the aircraft was somewhat unstable on taxiing. It is not exactly clear, what engine powered these machines. Aircraft 103/17 has even been historically documented as being powered by a captured Le Rhone from a Nieuport XVII. The Fokker F.I was armed with a pair of synchronized Spandau 7.92mm machine guns. The aircraft featured a high turn and climb rate, but suffered from a lack of speed. Manfred von Richthofen remarked that the 'aircraft climbs like a monkey and turns like the devil.'. Fokker F.I 102/17 (Werk Nummer 1729) reached the air base at Marckebeke in August 1917 and was received by Jasta 11, where it was taken over for testing by none other than Rittmeister Manfred von Richthofen himself. He reached his 60th kill on September 1st, and 61 st on September 3rd flying the new airplane. Richthofen left on medical leave on September 6th, 1917, and the plane was taken over by Oberleutnant Kurt Wolff, who fell in combat with No.10 Squadron RNAS Camels on September 15th, 1917. -

Just about every facet of the campaign has been analyzed and reexamined. However, one area of the battle that has been little explored is the second battle which took place simultaneously to the one on the ground. This second battle occurred in the skies above the Somme, where for the first time in the history of warfare a deliberate air campaign was planned and executed to support ground operations. The British Royal Flying Corps (RFC) was tasked with achieving air superiority over the Somme sector before the British Fourth Army attacked to start the ground offensive. -

COLORADO MILITARY HISTORIANS NEWSLETTER XVI, No. 12 DECEMBER 2015 Der Fokker Eindecker Ending the Fokker Scourge The War in the Air Fall 1915 - Spring 1916 by Jeff Lambert By the Fall of 1915, the Great War had seen its first anniversary. The lines on the Western Front were well established, with little change forseeable. The war at sea had become a stalemate and held little promise for making a decision. Only the war in the air showed any opportunity for either side to militarily influence the fortunes of Europe. Beginning as a sideshow in 1914, with only minor combat abilities, the aircraft of both sides had developed by Autumn 1915 into weapon systems with a potential of affecting the strategic outcome. The great difficulty of mounting a machine gun and all of its necessary accoutrements-- ammunition and a gunner to fire it-- was largely solved by this time. Engines powerful enough and airframes strong enough to lift all the weight required were now on-line. The principal problems remained, however-- how to design an aircraft capable of gaining air superiority over the enemy. The best speed and climbing ability was found in the single-seat scout types, almost always of tractor configuration. With the motor and airscrew in the front, this is the standard form we are familiar with today. The trouble was that the arc of the propeller right in front prevented the use of a forward-firing machine-gun. Several methods were tried, including mounting the machine-gun to fire at an angle (not very satisfactory), mounting the machine gun on the top wing to clear the propeller arc (much better, but still of limited utility) and even moving the engine and propeller to the middle of the aircraft (!) and placing the gun and gunner in a "pulpit" at the front of the machine (!!). -
