AHS Lady Spartans have stepped it up since last year’s record of 4-10 overall and 1-7 in DoDEA SEurope Division 1 (D1). With returners from the previous season the team has challenged themselves in practices every day to become winners. In a typical practice they start with simple layup drills and develop basic basketball skills and knowledge. Following warm- ups they go over our offensive, defensive, press/press- breakers, and inbound plays. Work ethic is everything when playing in team sports. Team members have to do their part to work and improve their skills. Some aspects of sports practices focus on self-reliance and accountability because, without those things, players cannot form a Gabi Schultz gets ready to shoot her free throws well-run team. The Lady Spartans have had only one loss this season against the Ramstein Royals. At this time in the season the Lady Spartans are second in D1 with a record of 7-1 in Division 1, and 11-1 overall. ”Everybody needs to pack the gym when we play our home games, because we need a lot of support from the student body and fans. This team has the potential to win the championship, something that hasn’t been done in a long time, but we have to take it one game at a time,” said Lady Spartans coach, Joe Cherrone. “As underdogs against big schools like Stuttgart, Ramstein, Wiesbaden and Kaiserslautern (K-Town) we’ve been underestimated, but on the court the girls show what we are really made of. They want to make SHAPE proud of Lady Spartans basketball and prove to everyone at the 2020 Basketball European Championships that they deserve their spot in the division. I believe they have what it takes to win and become champions. Whatever the outcome of Europeans our school is proud of the Lady Spartans Basketball team and what they’ve accomplished this season.” The Lady Spartans team isn’t just a bunch Saba Harding and Heda Filosevic cheer for SAHS Varsity girls while of players, it’s a family. working the bake sale
